    I really wish you would have explained more about why you didn’t like the books other than i didn’t gel with you. Was it the pacing, to many povs, a lyrical or simple writing style, more action than character development etc.
    It helps me to decide if maybe I wouldn’t like the books too or if something you didn’t like was something I typically really enjoy then it might be a book that I would try and pick up.

    Sasha, I've been watching your videos for years and I think you're very sweet, charismatic and likeable.
    However, I wish you were more transparent when reviewing/rating books. I've noticed you seem afraid to give a book less than 3 stars, and in your TBR's all the books you read are 4/5 stars (and even when they're less than that, you say it was a good book and that you recommend it). In this video, it really shows - this video is so vague! I wish you would've gone into deeper detail about what it was you didn't like about a certain book.
    P.s. This is NOT hate! I love Sasha and this is to be interpreted as constructive criticism :)

      stating what u dislike about a book is good so people can have more broader view on it! Whether they're not okay with it too or it's something they don't mind. That is what I expect when I see vids like this, but yea I think it'll need more effort than telling people about books u like

    • @mushroomshrub

      @Alyssa 011 Filtering out any negative opinions when talking about books may not be outright lying, but it's still dishonest. When you have a position of influence and what you say can impact what people choose to spend their money on, you have an obligation to be completely forthright. Otherwise you're not a reviewer, you're a marketing tool for publishers. It's that simple.
      To be fair to Sasha, this is not a problem unique to her. It impacts any booktuber big enough to have a working relationship with authors/publishers to varying degrees. And I do understand it to a certain extent, making a reliable income in new media is hard. But I feel like Sasha for whatever reason has a tougher time navigating between her friendly bubbly affect and the business aspect of her channel, and the result is bland content that doesn't feel the least bit genuine. Not someone whose words I'd take at face value.

    • @mushroomshrub
      @mushroomshrub 5 лет назад +5

      Aw, I'm glad you like my name, I chose it myself!
      Anyhoo, I don't hate Sasha. I have nothing against her as a human, she's very probably a lovely person, idk I don't know her. (Neither do you, for that matter.) She seems to have a lot of enthusiasm and I genuinely wish her success with her upcoming projects. I wouldn't be here otherwise.
      That being said, it''s still totally within my rights to critique the way she chooses to present her channel. idk what rock you've been living under but it's far from ridiculous to say most big booktubers are publicists by proxy. Sponsored book review? Paid marketing. Holding up a book you got sent by a publisher in a haul? Paid marketing. Sponsored book club/liveshow? Paid marketing. Like I said, it's not a problem unique to Sasha, and like I said I don't necessarily have an issue with it if done right (people gotta make rent somehow, I get it, really), I just find the way she handles it to be increasingly inelegant. As do many others apparently, particularly post Zenith.

    Is it true that you don't want to read negative opinions regarding your own books? Because constructive criticisms is essential if you want to grow as an author and not listening/ignoring "negative" reviews is just holding you back from truly reaching your own potential as a writer.

    • @mtl199813
      @mtl199813 5 лет назад +15

      Authors are generally advised (by other authors but also by editors, agents, etc) to not seek out negative reviews. If an element of the story is problematic, then yes, I do think the author should seek out ways to do better. But a lot of the time negative reviews are just based on personal tastes and opinions.

    I think everyone is rightfully entitled to their opinion but you really kept it incredibly vague. Kind of off putting to say you dislike A Game of Thrones just because you personally couldn’t handle its intensity. Or saying everything was great about a book but it just “wasn’t for you”? If it’s well written and you read the entire thing, then explain what it is you didn’t like about it rather than just simply put. I mean, I can write an entire novel on why I didn’t like your book.. oh the irony of this video.

(You are a big influence on what I do and don’t read; I know that’s a lot to put on a person!) I liked seeing this video on your channel, and hope to see more like it, but perhaps you could change it slightly? Like instead of just saying the book didn’t vibe with you (and, as a fellow reader, I understand it’s hard to explain why it didn’t vibe with you for sometimes) but perhaps give a little insight as to why you didn’t like it; such as the writing style, or main character was problematic to you, etc. You did it for some in this video and not for others. But other than that you are doing great Sweetie! Keep doing you! And I admire you for being able to do something this brave. 💋❤️👍🏻🖖🏻😊 ~Artie

They look so shallow and done without any effort, talking about books with no concrete arguments. I've watched you for a few years but I'm unsubscribing now since it's obvious you are doing this just to get new views and money with sponsors.
    I get you have obligations and life just happens, but it's ok not to post videos if you don't have time.

Even her friends have given it like 2 stars and the big booktubers haven’t even read it because they know it sucks and don’t want to hurt sensitive Sasha’s feelings. It’s also not as if she can be like a normal person and have more then one job like a lot of people do.

    • @Tabbyhenne
      @Tabbyhenne 5 лет назад +2

      Haha oh dear, if you honestly believe sponsorships are aRUclipsr's main source of income there's a lot you don't know... with that amount of subscribers and views per video Sasha can have a pretty good life without sponsored videos. In fact, there are a lot of youtubers who do one sponsored video per year or even less; and they seem to be doing just fine. Believe me even if she never did a sponsored video again she'd be able to pay her bills for the rest of her life - that's how much youtubers make. But some people (probably including her) can never have enough money, and it's a pretty easy way to make some extra cash. I think it diminishes her integrity if she does sponsored videos so often because she cannot possibly stand behind all of these products / companies etc. But just keep believing everything she tells you blindly if it makes you happy

    I actually that this was a really good video, too often I've stumbled across random booktube videos where they can be quite scathing of books they didn't enjoy. But I can relate much more to your perspective of not resonating with certain things and not hating the book on the whole as so much as just disliking parts of it that just weren't for you. That's cool ! And can totally relate to this, thanks Sasha ! I'm yet to read Game Of Thrones, but I am curious to see how I will fare with it haha. I sort of felt like I would stumble into a similar obstacle with Diana Gabaldon's books in that they are so dense and descriptive that my mind would feel like taking a break every 30 or so pages! But I feel like, in my experience there are pro's and cons to every author's writings, and every readers pro's and cons are different haha. Wow this turned into a bit of a rant, but I still have a great love for DG's writing and other books where I found some things challenging, and I think that's a part of the wonderful about reading. It's different for everyone, and often it inspires growth.

    for a song of ice and fire I can suggest you to read the comics. they were created after the books, I mean yeah obviously... but like they're not based on the tv show that has so much less details. the comic books actually have the same amount of details as the books (I think? I've only read a game of thrones and a few issues from the comics and so far... it was very accurate). I just personally think the comics are easier and quicker to read + GRRM tends to show too many characters at once without necessarily introducing them, so maybe having them illustrated will make it more enjoyable and less... overwhelming? idk

    Totally agree about Game of Thrones!! I have forced myself to read all the books, just because I'm so obsessed with the tv show that I like to know more about what is going on. But, I actually HATE the books!! They are complete and utter torture, and it takes me a good year to read them. If he ever does actually put out another book, I don't think I'll bother reading it, since he did give the show rights to use his ending. I mean, I know there are going to be some differences, because they've definitely put their own spin on various situations, but over all, I will get the gist of what is supposed to happen.
    It's funny though, I love almost all of the other books you mentioned. I love the Keira Cass books (obviously not some great work of literature, but I find them super entertaining), and Scorch Trials was my favorite in the Maze Runner trilogy, and I love Da Vinci Code (I've actually been meaning to re-read it)! No hate, though! I actually want you to do more of these videos! I'm always so excited when my favorite booktubers talk about books they didn't like, because I find it so interesting to see what I agree, and disagree, about.

    As much as I love Sasha I need to say this, when she shares negative reviews it's good and bold and 'everyone has their own opinion' and when smaller reviewers negatively reviewed Zenith, it's for attention? Also I really feel like authors these days should own the fuck up to the toxicity in their writing (Sarah J Maas, Colleen Hoover, Cassandra Clare ahem) Like, your stories are great and compelling but problematic at parts too. Also the writing isn't that strong but no one really cares about that these days.

    I haven’t been able to finish the Cruel Prince. Maybe since because unless it’s Sarah J Maas or Cassandra Clare, I really can’t get into books about faeries. Like worlds and people are always strange to me and I never quite get them. Also Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo. I haven’t been able to finish the one either. I bought it because of I was very intrigued with it being about Wonder Woman which is an epic storyline it’s kind of hard to beat the original storyline. And I don’t know I just didn’t care or connect with the characters and maybe it’s just because the movie was so epic that the book just didn’t hold a candle. Which is sad because I love the Grisha Universe. But Wonder Woman was just lacking something. It’s like with Roseblood being a retelling of the Phantom of the Opera, it’s hard to retell such an epic story and have the same wow factor that the Originals have. And so I didn’t care for Roseblood. I really couldn’t finish the Selection series. And I prefer the movie of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Maybe it’s because I watched the movie first but I really liked the characters in the movie. And some of the characters in the book just kind of annoy me.
