What might be the reason that same brand of chalk is so soft and buttery sometimes and so crunchy and hard sometimes??

Sometimes due to packaging,like plastic wrapped z athletic is always hard
Sometimes when the shipment takes a lot of time to reach the brands get stale
Also sometimes when the seller runs out of the good soft chalk they replace it with the hard chalk just to meet demands(hard gym chalk were originally made for gyms for better grip)
