Leonardo, over & over forgetting his non-sensical lines with no background bar patron chatter or atmosphere, like have the bar owners daughter actually come down & play the dam fiddle, anything to make it a little more interesting as this scene dragged on forever. Following Margo, wondering around aimlessly, like she was lost, in knee high white boots & a long sleeve black sweater, while on the strip, mid-day, bright sunshine, summer hot, no wonder she lost the boots once inside the theatre. Leonardo sweating profusely in his winter apparel, dyed Custer leather jacket & this heavy purple corduroy pull over sweat-shirt, like the wardrobe department was playing a joke on him. Why all this bravado about how we turned the strip into 1969, L.A with no CGI., then suddenly mix in all this CGI vintage action film footage in Italy or when Leonardo, not even close to looking realistic, played Steve McQueen, in the Great Escape & finally streamline, lengthen the fantastic song choices are just a few obvious suggestions. Quentin edited 4 hours of film down to 2 hours & 40 minutes, one only wonders what was left on the cutting room floor as Margo never got in the pool at the mansion per the trailer? Simply not as polished as the movie trailer which was a fantastic, beautifully orchestrated mix of cinematography & song, but still overall an absolutely awesome movie ! "That scene where brad pitt takes her to the ranch is terrifying because you dont know what's gonna happen" Yea, and then NOTHING DOES. That's this movie's MO. You think something is gonna happen and then NOTHING DOES. And that goes on for 2 hours and 30 minutes, until the end, when something finally happens, and it feels like its out of a different movie
I think maybe you missed the point of the ranch scene.........it was to show Cliff's character in the face of hostility and overwhelming odds. Hes outnumbered about 20-1 and theyre hostile to him being there, yet he persists and does the right thing, checks up on his old friend. The scene shows that cliff is loyal, honorable and most importantly, brave. Thats the point of the scene!!!
Welcome back from a bad decision! I hope Ben is coming back too. I see him on the CNN series 'The Movies' in super short comments. Love Once Upon a Time.. I've seen it twice. Three things I took away, Cliff the heavy had soft spots with the owner of Spawn Ranch - Bruce's character, the Manson girl & Rick. The simple girl next door beauty of Sharon, even better looking than original Sharon - a view of her before she was murdered, and the wicked switch up for the audience (they could never show the original massacre). Well done Quentin, first Academy movie of the year!
This may sound pretentious, but I felt like this film was his La Dolce Vita mixed with dazed and confused; with some Inherent Vice. Instead of hanging around a paparazzi, it’s a has been actor trying to get his shit together, instead of the 70s rolling to a close its the 60s. It was experimental, it was the nonplot paper thin narrative few directors especially in Hollywood dare to write (john cassavetes). It’s was a surreal hangout movie for me. I walked out the theater liking it but I didn’t know why I liked it until I compared to other films not just Tarantino’s previous movies. It’s was like inward plot with Rick Dalton struggling with himself but at the same time it had the slice of life nonplot happening at the same time. Idk it feels like Tarantino is inching more and more into art house movies but is some how able to get the tens of millions behind him to produce it. People who hate it probably prefer classical narrative structure with a clear plot, and solid protagonist goals; that’s not this film at all. Hell I’m wondering what he’ll do for his supposedly last 10th film? Also Tarantino in interviews says he never has an ending planned, he writes the first two acts then wonders what he’ll do for the end, writes just to spectacle and throw off his audience. That’s why most of his movies end with the protagonist slaughtering a mass of bad guys in his movies. Overall I liked it, oh and all the booty and foot shoots were weird
There's a few really great Tarantino scenes. But my God are they few and far between. The most of the movie is just showing off how they recreated the 60's. Driving and walking scenes and we absolutely have to see every billboard they made. So selfindulgent and pretentious.
Criticize the movie if you want for objectifying beautiful women, but the same could be said for the camera’s obsession with Pitt especially the shirtless roof scene that Christy appreciates and wants to see again. Tarantino has an eye for detail which I find entertaining and I will see this movie again, like Christy.
I saw it yesterday and left totally clogged up and with no idea of what I really felt about it other than I loved the obvious appeal to movie freaks such as myself who are also aging. As a little 14 year old hippie in 1969 who kept every newspaper clipping from the day of the murders till after the trial, I loved the accuracy and his reenactment of that time.. There were several times I actually teared up because it brought back memories of that terrible headline. From the very beginning of hearing about this film and from what little I read about it, I will only say that I thought it was going to involve some sort of rescue fantasy. That's all I'm saying. Anyway, I like it better today than I did yesterday and really think I need to see it again. There were several things about it that bug me that bug me about all movies where they are recreating people that I am old enough to remember having been alive, and I am almost always unhappy or irritated with the depictions. However, I realize that sometimes they have to do that for dramatic effect or for simply time limitations. Like this movie, I am rambling LOL so I will quit now. But enjoyed you're review and agree with most of your points.
The ending is divisive for her. What would she rather have seen. The female character plunge a knife into the pregnant Sharan Tate? Christie would defend Myra Hindly on the grounds that she was a woman.
Just an aside, but someone should have put a shade over the window, and/or manually opened the exposure a few steps on the video camera. Or, shot it from the opposite direction in the room. As a result, everyone's too dark. Simple rules of back light adjustment 101. --Just saying.
The Bruce Lee scene was the WORST in the movie. Lee is portrayed as a caricature of himself, and he has the wrong hairstyle for Kato. Lee would also NEVER lose a fight to a simple stunt man. The scene was ridiculous and not authentic.
Bruce Lee wasn't his character in enter the dragon. The real Bruce was pretty vain he bought a gold coloured rolls Royce. Also judo Gene was a stuntman contemporary of Bruce and ended up teaching Bruce some grappling.
There’s something kinda gross about culturally fetishizing/romanticizing the past to me, as though it glosses over all the unsavory aspects of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Also, Christy and Alonso should clarify that there’s nothing wrong with having a foot fetish, it was the exploitative power dynamic aspect of it.
I feel like this movie was in many ways much too long, it’s almost three hours and I feel like it could have been shorter and better in terms of pacing
MGBillionaire yeah but I still had a lot of fun with his other movies, with this one it felt kind of lifeless in a many parts. There was still a lot of stuff I liked in it such as the Margot Robbie/Sharon Tate scenes, the narration was actually charming , The Spanish Theatre theme etc. All the stuff I liked just felt so much farther away from each other in this movie
Was the split not amicable? You would think The TYT folks could have put up a short video or something, with some text or your logo, saying you guys had moved
Sorry. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not jump "YEARS"... the first part takes place over the course of ONE WEEKEND (with some flashbacks here and there) then....it jumps to SIX MONTHS LATER and the last part of the film happens. The day and night of the murders.
This movie was a fairy tale, with many character traits present in traditional fairy tales (including and especially demonstrated in the relationship between Cliff and Rick. Cliff's character is 2 dimensional like typical side kicks in traditional fairy tales. Don't overanalyze his character. The relationship is meant to be unrealistic). I'm not sure these reviewers understand that so I just want to point it out. It's a Tarantino film. If you like his work you'll like it; if you don't you won't. If you haven't seen it yet and plan to, turn this video off until you see it. Spoilers will ruin some parts for you.
What the Flick? A Young Turks property and in mid 2018 they tried to have their own YT channel & charging. I hope it failed, they were very greedy, price was too high.
Movie was good , but kind of misunderstood. Brad Pitt and little girl stoeneld the movie. My friends did not understand the pilot but I did. It was funny and under stand of true friendship. Brad Pitt should get a Oscar for his role. Weakest movie by Quiention that he has ever made.
I liked this movie, didnt love it. Leo was incredible in this role, he is a brilliant actor. Brad too. However, it did drag on a bit too long, definitely some unecessary scenes that I wish he didnt keep in the film. But I have to say, I laughed so hard at the ending. I thought the ending was the best part of the film. Hateful 8 and Inglorious bastards are waaaaay better than this film, hands down no question.
The inclusion of the characters of Sharon Tate and Manson, along with the reviews being all over the place made me hesitate to see this movie in a theater. I decided to seek out spoilers...so easy. I am inclined to see this movie streaming, when I have control of the video.

This movie is langid and meandering has little plot and only exsist to be a loveletter to what 1969 was for the characters via the skeleton of a plot. If you love Tarrintino youll love this. If you dont like him or are on the fence this will NOT be your favorite movie of his to say it mildly. Why does this movie exist otherwise. Because Hollywood and Tarrintino fans love him and he loves them back. At least Hollywood. Sorry if I mispelt the name.
@@arnoldstrongnumerouno Its not about "getting it" its about watching the movie and actively participating in it. Actually think about what is happening and then after the movie, maybe take a second to think about why things were done the way they were. I'm not going to spoil everything, but there is an overall thematic point that everyone seems to be completely missing. Basically there are plot lines that diverge from the "main story" and people are not understanding why those are there or why they are important. And if you are a person who critiques movies for a living you should be able to use your brain.

I generally pass on movies described as “love letter to Hollywood”
Edit: SPOILERS in replies below
10:40 "Tarantino can do interesting stuff with female characters and he can also be super shitty with them. And he does both." Complaint?
That comment made less than no sense. The entire movie is a revision of history that saves an innocent womans life.
@@dash4800 Yep, yet people are complaining about the violence against the would be perpetrators of that particularly heinous real life crime. Add in some objectification complaints and you get some truly puritanical takes on the work of a director known for making exploitation films.
@@theonlytampacks she was as much of the movie as she needed to be.. the movie incorporated her as it wanted to elude you to think she might be a victim again, yet it's the MAIN characters that become the victims, then you can realize why her almost nonexistence makes sense. SHE IS NOT THE VICTIM or MANY CHARACTER.. maybe it's time to go back and watch Marvel movies if this doesn't make sense to you.
Nice to see you guys! It’s been awhile
TOM CRUISE turned the Stunt Man role down 😩
i imagine if cruise could have summoned that same dark energy like pitt was doing... i don't know. maybe cruise is just a bit too short to have that effect. no disrespect though.
Love Tom! But brad was my favorite! He was so good
Tom didn’t turn it down. He possibly would have done it if Tarantino hadn’t had Brad & Leo. It would have been Tom & some other actor probably.
Brad Lanky
You really think tarantino will say publicly Tom Cruise turned his role down ? Lol
Tarantino said he went to Cruise to play the part.
Travis Besst
Said the loser
Django = black fantasy movie
Inglorious Basterds = Jewish fantasy movie
Once Upon a Time = white fantasy movie
"That scene where brad pitt takes her to the ranch is terrifying because you dont know what's gonna happen"
Yea, and then NOTHING DOES.
So they cant show girls in skirts but Brad Pitt without his shirt is cool???
I enjoyed this movie! Review Paul Thomas Anderson and thom Yorke’s ANIMA!!
I don't understand where they draw the line for spoilers. They should have just gave a spoiler warnings at some point and continued with a full review.
Whens ben gunna make an appearance???
Seriously, you guys gave this a similar rating as Crawl?
I loved this movie! I’m going to see it again this week.
There's a few really great Tarantino scenes. But my God are they few and far between. The most of the movie is just showing off how they recreated the 60's. Driving and walking scenes and we absolutely have to see every billboard they made. So selfindulgent and pretentious.
basquat76 the movie is personal one for Tarantino.
@@Bradford659 Which is a disturbing thought. But i don't think it's anymore personal then any of his other films.
17:40 Wtf Alonso, 6.5?? It's much better than that.
18:04 Christy, four months later it's still at 85%.
Frank Gentile Maybe see it a 2nd time. It clicked for me the 2nd time.
@@Bradford659 That's the plan!
The ending is divisive for her. What would she rather have seen. The female character plunge a knife into the pregnant Sharan Tate? Christie would defend Myra Hindly on the grounds that she was a woman.
It’s actual art, not a formula regurgitation... it’s practically perfect, in my humble, cinephile opinion.
LOVE LETTER ITS A LOVE LETTER LOVE LETTER LE LOVE LETTER
Just an aside, but someone should have put a shade over the window, and/or manually opened the exposure a few steps on the video camera. Or, shot it from the opposite direction in the room. As a result, everyone's too dark. Simple rules of back light adjustment 101. --Just saying.
It is not better than Inglorious Bastards
The best discussion/review of this film I've seen on RUclips. Thank you.
END divisive? Ummm.. Naaaah.. The END was TIGHT! Love it!
The girl has more testosterone than both of them combined
Kill Bill is ONE MOVIE. Period. (was made as ONE FILM was split into two parts due to run time.)
The Bruce Lee scene was the WORST in the movie. Lee is portrayed as a caricature of himself, and he has the wrong hairstyle for Kato. Lee would also NEVER lose a fight to a simple stunt man. The scene was ridiculous and not authentic.
Joe Smith what a great scene. So hilarious! Especially once Randy’s wife gets involved.
revisionist history is the whole point of the movie.
JoBananas don’t think that was the point. I think it was really just a character study.
Bruce Lee wasn't his character in enter the dragon. The real Bruce was pretty vain he bought a gold coloured rolls Royce. Also judo Gene was a stuntman contemporary of Bruce and ended up teaching Bruce some grappling.
@@CallousCarter The character Cliff Booth in OUTIH is not a martial artist of any kind. No way Bruce would lose to someone like that.
No
Yep, I was waiting for the "hipster Social Justice Warrior" review of the film, and I finally found it.
It takes place over 2 days for most of the movie & jumps ahead once
only TRUE movie geeks remember "four rooms" the worst thing tarantino directed
I liked Four Rooms, he only did the last story with the finger and lighter.
@@CrakaBakBlak still the short is the worst thing he has directed
Agree with Matt, enjoyed it more than Hateful 8 and Django
Was the split not amicable? You would think The TYT folks could have put up a short video or something, with some text or your logo, saying you guys had moved
They're back!
As far as misogyny goes, the woman gave this movie the highest score so Alonso you can calm down
Guy in the middle clearly hates himself
???
What channel did they come from? I used to watch them all the time. Then RLM consumed me. Love the mics on stacks of books.
Sid Vicious obviously he did. It has an 85% on rotten tomatoes.
Happy I found u guys you guys are awesome
Doesn't take place over a few years. Just 6 months actually. Smh
I get the feeling that they all liked it more then they are letting on but don't want to admit it.
Okaaaaaaay
@@scottbarkley496 she even said it "i don't really wanna watch a Tarantino film" and Alonso in previous episodes of whattheflick has said as much. They don't like him and it shows
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood Bruce Lee fight scene is "Ridiculous"!!!
So Margot Robbie walking down the street in a skirt is objectifying women but when brad Pitt gets in the roof and takes off his shirt it’s “yeesss brad you can do that!” Ummm hypocrisy much?
Was wondering what happened to you Guys!
7:15 sharantino
This movie is langid and meandering has little plot and only exsist to be a loveletter to what 1969 was for the characters via the skeleton of a plot. If you love Tarrintino youll love this. If you dont like him or are on the fence this will NOT be your favorite movie of his to say it mildly. Why does this movie exist otherwise. Because Hollywood and Tarrintino fans love him and he loves them back. At least Hollywood. Sorry if I mispelt the name.
Best Leo ever
Leo fangirls everywhere
So Margaret Qualley is being objectifying but Brad Pitt with his shirt off is not?
Nice freckles!
So objectifying Brad Pitt is just fine, but objectifying the actress who plays Pussycat is toxic?
more people who didnt even come close to grasping the point of the movie. I'm losing faith in youtube critics
whats the point of the moovie
These critics studied film & watched, dissected & analyzed more films than you will ever do, i'll take their opinion on any film over your's.
The movie doesn't suck but isn't the best either. Hands down his worst film which I'm judging only off of his other films. The movie missed some staple Tarantino things, one that stands out is a cool monologue.
Just because it doesn't have all of the usual trademarks of a QT film doesn't mean it's worse than his others because of it.
@@msacca True but it really is his worst. Where would you rank this film in his catalogue?
@@CrakaBakBlak I definitely disagree but to each his own! I've only seen Hollywood twice so far compared to seeing each of Tarantino's other movies at least 3 times, but my current ranking goes:
1) Inglourious Basterds
2) Pulp Fiction
3) Django Unchained
4) Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood
5) Jackie Brown
6) Kill Bill Vol. 2
7) Reservoir Dogs
8) Kill Bill Vol. 1
9) The Hateful Eight
10) Death Proof
@@msacca I dig this. I would personally flip 1 and 3 and 4 and 10. I find 4 and 10 interesting on your list. To me, the movies have the same pacing but DP has a better story to me. The acting in Hollywood is tremendously better and the final act is better but I still find DP more entertaining.
11:00 and 15:14 Q.T. just trolled you, Christy
Dicaprio is amazing. The film is an overlong mess.
Better late than never 😋
These guys dislike every movie
Glad to have found you guys back together, but Duralde mentioning "whiteness" in three reviews straight totally lost me. The quality of the reviews has really become a lot worse since wtf.
No if you’re gonna watch a movie related to the Manson stuff watch Haunting Of Sharon Tate. Haha jk it’s the worst movie of the year.
In my opinion being a Tarantino fan this is the 1stof his films walked out of His worst
work to date in my opinion dvd maybe to sit in a theater to watch DEF NOT!!!
Didn't like the movie at all
Alonso once again proving that he can only see a film through the lens of identity politics
Welp about what I expected... movie goes into his TOP 5 easy
I honestly found this film boring
One of the most overrated movies in existence
Middle guy seems depressed that he’s white lmao..
