You said two of my favorites and you're absolutely right. I'd say Isabelle Huppert and Cate Blanchett fit that box too. Cate when it comes to her character in Tár and the latest tv show she's on
I saw this last week. Such a fascinating character study. The choice to rarely move away from Kidman’s face during the intimate scenes really adds so much to the performance because you are really with her through all the steps of this and all the emotion playing out on her face. Really good movie. Probably one of the year’s best
I thought it was extremely well made and performed, but I think asking the audience to suspend moral judgement for her infidelity because of "self-discovery" and "empowerment" is a bit much.
I don’t necessarily think that’s what the movie is asking of the audience. I think it is self discovery, while also being a terrible thing to do. I think it’s more asking the audience to live in that grey area, which is more interesting
After watching the movie, I believe that interpretation is a misreading. The film clearly portrays her infidelity, and her relationship with a subordinate, as morally wrong. However, it refrains from passing judgment on her specific sexual kinks. By the end of the film, it is evident that she is a deeply troubled woman.

I'd be curious to know from folks here what you think of this: There are some discussions online from people who believe there was a sort of hidden "sub plot" to this story, whereby Samuel and Esme (Romy's assistant) conspired to blackmail Romy. Why? In order to rise quickly within the ranks of the company, which they ended up doing. Esme got the big promotion and Samuel got a job in Japan (I believe). The conspiracy began with the dog incident at the beginning of the movie, where Samuel was somehow able to calm him quickly. Samuel says it was because of a cookie, but if you recall, the dog first responded to Samuel's whistle -- not an offer of a cooke. Then, at the end of the movie, we see Samuel in the hotel with what appears to be the same dog. So, the dog was apparently his all along. So, this whole thing appears to be a setup. And remember, Romy couldn't figure out how she ended up on the company mentor list. But, if you recall, Esme controlled that list, so she apparently made sure that Romy was on it and that Romy met often with Samuel. Another possibility in the film people are speculating about is that Romy could have set up the whole affair herself by paying Samuel to give her the dominant experience she was looking for. This is reinforced at the end of the film when she coyly says to one of her colleagues, "If I want to be humiliated, I'll pay for it." Perhaps that's precisely what she did? So, in conclusion, it appears there is a lot more going on in this story than what's on the surface. Any thoughts?
