      True. That goes in an ebb and flow situation. At the end of the day my MAIN REASON for starting the story is the main reason for finishing it. That, and knowing I will hate myself for the rest of my life if I don't see it through after getting thus far. Done it in the past and I won't do it again. serious disappointment!

      As a Swede and a teacher in training, the very concept of being homeschooled is extremely foreign to me. In Sweden you can't just decide to homeschool your kids, it's in the law that kids need to be enrolled in and attinding a primary school from the schoolyear starting the year they turn 7, until they've finished 9 years of primary education, and only if a kid has a ceritain condition, like a severe illness over an extended period of time, can they get homeschooled, in which case the head of the school they're enrolled at will make that decision. If they do, they will still have to take responsability for the kids education, and have to provide teachers and make sure the education matches the one the kid would otherwise recieve at school, as far as the circumstances allows. In special cases a parent with a teaching licence might be allowed to teach the kid in the subjects s/he is licenced for, but there are strict rules as to who can and can't put a final grade on your works. I could techincally teach my sister or cousin or any other family member, but I can't grade them, since I would be conciderd partial, no matter how fair I would acctually be. The same goes for kids of my best friend, but also if a kid of someone I absolutely hate would be put in my class, it's my responability to ask that either the kid or I be re-located so I don't grade them unfairly based on any pre-existing relationship - good or bad - with their parents.

      @1perspective286 3 года назад +3

      @@Blixthand Sadly education is highly politicized in America. There is a lot of debate about what should and should not be taught in schools. Many fundamentalist Christians, for example, do not want their kids to learn about evolution in school. Some states have actually gone so far as to ban the teaching of evolution in schools, but most just allow for the option of homeschooling instead. We have to take a test at the end of the school year, or pass some other officially recognized curriculum, but other than that home-schoolers are given a lot of freedom in terms of what they can study (depending on your guardians).
      Of course, not everyone home-schools for religious reasons. My on mother home-schooled me because she was worried about growing gang activity in local high-schools.
      Overall, while it's definitely not the norm in America, it is much more common than in Europe.

      @@Blixthand tbh depending on the area being homeschooled could leave you better off. @@skywriter9532 the story of star wars is a great story. I mean it made Paolini alot of money. By ripping off star wars that just shows that he wasnt an author with original ideas. By not giving Lucas credit as the original creator of eragon's story that shows that Paolini is a pretty horrible person. Shows that he's arrogant, selfish, and a liar. It is one thing to let other work inspire you and borrow ideas from it. Another thing entirely to copy and reskin the whole plot for several books and trying to pass it off as your own.

      @@vinnigan6502 ok let's see an orphan boy you can call him eragon or luke, I dont care, lives on a farm with his uncle from his mother's side. A mother who is dead and a father who was a good knight but then switched and joined the evil emperor (the boys father also had a red sword). Then one day a princess and key member of the rebellion sends a special package (droids with plans or dragon egg you pick) to a wise old former knight. The package however finds its way into the hands of our young hero. By the way the wise old former knight has been watching the boy from the outskirts of town because of the boy's mother and to keep the boy safe from the evil emperor. Now the boy's farm is attacked amd his uncle killed and so the boy goes on a journey to join the rebellion with his wise old mentor/ former knight who gives him his father's old sword and instructs him in the ways of the force or magic whatever. Turns out this boy has to save the princess and then of course the wise old mentor dies and he does join the rebellion and is intrumental to them gaining a major victory shortly after joining. I can continue about how it's discovered that he has an unknown sibling, and how he has to get further training from a hermit master/former knight in hiding, and how he has to leave to save his friends before his training is complete, and how he has to make his own sword after losing his father's, and etc.
      Sooo. Yea Christopher Paolini ripped off Star Wars.

    What an awesome opportunity for you, Merphy! Thanks for sharing this with us. A sci-fi debut hmm, I definitely want to check that out. Paolini sold me when he mentioned everything it'll have.
    This should be a great vid!

    I have to say that this is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched on RUclips. He’s so great to listen to! I love the Inheritance Cycle and even though I’ve never read a sci-fi book in my life (I’m not counting Star Wars books because they’re a blend) I’m reading this one, simply because he wrote it. I saw the cover and the size and got SO excited. It was a great interview and so very helpful and informational for aspiring writers. I need an audio version so I can listen to it when I need a boost. Thank you so much to both of you!

    I honestly hadn't thought too much about Paolini since I read Eragon, but after seeing him on yours and Daniel's channels I have to say he seems like a really good guy. Thanks for doing the interview!

    28:45 this is really important, when it comes to creative control vs. creative feedback, is recognizing "there's a problem here that someone else can see" but tbh ignoring their offered solutions unless they're a writing GENIUS. Because how you solve the problem should come from you in the end, it's your story, the big thing here is knowing that there probably is a problem if it gives your reviewers pause, and then accepting that you can fix it without getting stuck with the bandaid you're being offered.

    Just saw him on Daniel's channel. Glad you got to speak to him too. He's one of my favorite authors, and basically is the reason I love fantasy today. I haven't read much Sci-Fi, so maybe he will be my introduction to another genre.
