The voice acting in these books was really quite brilliant, for the most part. There's nothing quite like well-spoken British accents. As a kid growing up in country Australia I really loved hearing voices like these.
This is the Best audiobook ever I have listened. Something far beyond than Excellent. Keep it up, Sir. Expect to have more from the works of Sir A.C.Doyle, my most favorite author.
BBC radio dramatisations are excellent. Recently been listening to The Hex, Before the Screaming Begins (Wally K Dally) and Slipstream by Simon Bovey all engrossing and acted superbly
So happy that people like you put up such classics from my childhood on you tube! used to scare the shit out of me lol. great story and great production!!
These series were so well read and voice acted, this and the ladybird audio of treasure island with Smetanas classical sound track are so nostalgic to me and remind me of being 5 years old, I've never heard better versions of them, they are excellent, so much effort in their production and it's still brilliant 33 years later, a master class in audio
Brings back great memories. Check out Ladybird's version of "Dracula" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles" better than any modern version. It's just a shame that this narrator and actors did not read the original adult versions of these stories. This story is a childs version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story "Lot 249".
We had this audio book when I was a kid! I listen to this recording periodically for nostalgia's sake (and because its a great story). Thanks for uploading!
This story was the inspiration for the story "Lot 249" in the 1990 film "Tales From The Darkside: The Movie." I knew of the story, but never heard it or read it. So awesome. Thanks for posting.
All the Ladybird Horror tapes used portions of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique as their background music. The only exception is Hound of the Baskervilles, as it used the Night on the Bare Mountain.
Actually, The Hound of the Baskervilles was not in the 'Horror' range. I remember this very well, because that one scared me way more than any of the actual Horror ones, largely because of the illustrations, and I remember finding it ironic. I guess it makes sense, as there's nothing actually supernatural in Hound of the Baskervilles. Anyway, sorry for being pedantic :)
The Hound of the Baskervilles was originally released as part of the Ladybird Children's Classics series, hence the different music score on the tape. It was later reissued as part of the Horror Classics series.
Thank you so much for the info! I was trying unsuccessfully to find out what piece that was (Martin Fido also used it in his series of audiobooks on Jack the Ripper & other true crime). Now I know, thanks!
It was adapted by the BBC in 1967 for an episode of the TV series 'The Short Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle' but unfortunately copies of the episode seem to have been lost.
Lot 294 is a much better version of this story, is this the original Conan Doyle story & the other a more modern version? This sounds very old, especially the music in the background??
Who's idea was it to record this otherwise excellent drama in the Albert Hall during a concert, it did not add to the atmosphere of the piece in fact it totally ruined it. My attention constantly wavered between the details of the story and the blaring music.
It was not recorded in Albert Hall, but at Ambrose Chapel, which is a rehab clinic for people who transfer or project their inability to adjust basic eq/dsp settings on cheap audio equipment upon celebrated voice actors and the producers of classic literature audio-books.
Yikes! A great narrative voice all but ruined by awful inappropriate classical music in the background!! What were they thinking?---IF they were thinking, that is.

Thank you for the story and your time it is greatly appreciated
That's my pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
These stories are very entertaining. I really appreciate having something of this quality as an alternative to TV. Thank you 💚
I was on pins and needles. Excellent and thrilling!
So glad you enjoyed it!
So happy that people like you put up such classics from my childhood on you tube! used to scare the shit out of me lol. great story and great production!!
darkside197929 i used to have a book of this great story
Thank you so much for posting this! I have strangely fond memories of being creeped out at a very early age by this.

Utterly brilliant! Thanks for sharing.

never heard this before - it's great - thanks
Great book, totally enjoyed the, reading. Thank you so much .
I remember this... it was terrifying but great at the same time. This was a childhood well spent with ladybird
So happy to find this! Many nights of spooks!
Hey hey hey, we do not tolerate racist epithets in this channel. You must comment in the Racist Epithet Channel.
Thanks so much for putting this on here. Loved this as a kid.

In many short story compilations, it is listed under the that title: "Lot 249".
Great audio, great story. I never heard this one on the BBC, wish there were more stories like this one. Thanks for the upload
Aww gosh! I had this on tape as well. Such memories, I have a feeling that if it's not in my attic it's no longer with us.
Wonderful!
Music is distracting. Good story and acting. I have always enjoyed the older mummy movies. Has this particular mummy story been made into a movie?
@@marciapryor2771The BBC did a dramatisation this last Christmas (2023) by Mark Gatiss. They changed the ending though! 😡
Brilliant but would be improved without the background music.
Incredibly good reading. Thank You for uploading.
Thanks for posting this. Been trying to find the tape for years.
the music with this narration works beautifully. usually it drives me nuts!! second listen 😊🌷🌱
Still have all of these tapes and books, who was the narrator?
Thank you, great play ❤️🙏🏽
Nice story, Thanks for uploading
I play this sometimes for my passengers when I do UBER... they lov it!
Glad to hear it. I'll try and upload Dr Jekyll and Dracula (if I get a moment). Cassette to MP3 is tricky!
Thanx !!!
Actually Dr Jekyll is already on RUclips

I'm amazed this had never been adapted on the screen. The films have had different stories.
actually the first story from the movie "tales from the darkside" is based on this short story.
It was adapted by the BBC in 1967 for an episode of the TV series 'The Short Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle' but unfortunately copies of the episode seem to have been lost.
indelibleish yeah. That one was kind of goofy.
Is this story what started Universal's monster The mummy
excellent
The Music was ruined by some bloke talking all the way through it !
Lot 294 is a much better version of this story, is this the original Conan Doyle story & the other a more modern version?
This sounds very old, especially the music in the background??
RUMPLESTILTSKIN WAS MY FAV LADYBIRD BOOK WHAT WAS YOURS????
Not sure...

A great story, well read but the production is pretty bad. The music in the background starts out arguably appropriate, but ends up in a mess.
bra-vo 👏
Why the music? So irritating and distracting.
Not my fault. Sorry, it was on the tape.
chewie43playful I know it’s not your fault. Sorry, I was in a bad mood. My bad.

Yikes! A great narrative voice all but ruined by awful inappropriate classical music in the background!! What were they thinking?---IF they were thinking, that is.
Music is utterly annoying and does not compliment the narration AT ALL!
Turn off the fucking music!
+Mr. Cordwangler
Thank you for your comment, but the music was already on the tape! Sorry!!
At least the music isn't so loud that it drowns out the story.
chewie43playful
Don't be sorry. He's not worth it. He's an ignorant ingrate.
Not the best writing, performances or production you’ll ever hear, but I’ve heard much, much worse.
If you like old vinyl, that should help.
