Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Parasite' and 'The Lost World' series of novels, his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period.
'The Parasite' was originally published in four parts, in the London periodical 'Harper's Weekly', between 10 November and 1 December 1894, and as a single volume by the publishers A. Constable & Co. in the same year.
All 12 of the original 'Round the Fire' stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, narrated by Simon Stanhope, are now available on Audible and iTunes.

I really appreciate it when somebody puts the chapters into sections like that! I wouldn’t have a clue how to do it! BTW love this book! The reason I watched so much Sherlock Holmes, besides living in Baker Street, is because I heard he was into the supernatural when he was alive, and obviously a lot more now! LOL! I am so happy to have come across his actual works on the supernatural! I’d love to know how much of it was based on his actual experience! 1000 thank you’s and blessings!☯️
The first thing I did
The first thing I did was to be a part of the sphere

The only positive to come from the Covid pandemic is Simon Stanhope started Bitesized Audio Classics.
A good narrator makes a book. A bad narrator kills it. This narrator does a superlative job. A real pleasure.
Thank you Christopher, extremely kind of you to say so!
What oh I am considering we are in orbit s not aligned with your comments. Please do not indulge your medication with the formal interludes X Allan
Yes indeed an excellent narrator very distinctive+soothing voice with excellent intriguing storys-top channel
And I think British accent is essential. An American accent ruins it.
A good killer narrates a book; a killer narrator...wait...I'll come in again.
This is great stuff!🙂👍 And the top commenter is quite right: this narrator MAKES this story - as well as, of course, the great storytelling skills of the original author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! 🙂👍
Excellent, your narration sir is pitch perfect as always. It is like being handed a gift, every time you put a new story on your site, a real pleasure to receive. Thank you
What a lovely comment, thanks Rodney!
I'm new at this RUclips adventure, by pure chance, I found this,
I've heard that RUclips is a waste of time for the individuals that haven't taken the time to do basic research...
This is a classic example of that, do make the effort, it's worth it.

Yes, a flawless treat 👏
Such a perfect, clear narration. I just love your voice, and that of Tony Walker. You two stand miles above the rest.
Simon Stanhope is consistently professional and a joy to listen to!
Thank you!
I love the length of this story.
I was having a really bad day/night. But I put this on and relaxed. Great story and thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks Tnika, sorry to hear about your bad day, but glad if this helps! Best wishes

Feet by a warm open fire , cup of coffee and biscuits and Simon for ' company ' , what more could I wish for better than this ? Wonderful story, dear friend. 🔥 ☕️🍪 🔥 📚 👌🏼
That sounds lovely. Thanks Christine, best wishes to you
Those were the days when we had open fires.
Tour de force is a theatrical cliche, but you reading/performance sir fully deserves that epithet.Thank you sincerely.
I'm only on the second chapter and I'm yelling, "Run away! Run away!"
😅
I have read this story, and it's not one of my favorites, but I listened to the whole thing because you were doing such a wonderful job! Thank you again.
Thanks Rosie, kind of you to say so
... THE LENGTH OF THE STORY PUT ME OFF FOR OVER A YEAR .. NOW I'VE DONE IT.. I'M GLAD I DID ... ' GULAG ARCHIPELAGO ' IS ALSO BRILLIANT & LONG + THE NARRATOR HAS THE CLIPPED SARCASTIC ENGLISH ACCENT.. IT'S TRUE AS WELL..🖖🤩
I'm loving this, my first delve into a non- Sherlock story by Doyle, I feel blessed that it's done by you!
What a lovely comment, thank you! Also, I see you've just joined as a channel member - thanks so much for your support. Do check out the Community tab for updates and previews (if you're able to access it on your device)
"The Captain of the Polestar" is another fun standalone story of his :)
❤👍
A great story, superbly-read. The poor chap's mishaps while lecturing made me, as a lecturer myself, wince!
Yes, I can imagine: the ultimate "showing yourself up at work" nightmare....!
Amazing. More acting than reading and pitch perfect!
@juliadia007 Thank you, very kind of you to say so!
Excellent, really appreciate your time and effort you put in your oratory, your voice carries the books well in this modern age when English is not spoken correctly, and it's a Great big help with myself learning to read at 44,I've always been ashamed of my dyslexia, but you have helped me read again, thanks , keep the Norfolk ghosts stories coming,!!
Perfect timing!!!!! It's my birthday 🎂🎈🎂🎈! It's the perfect way to spend my day listening to your voice telling me a wonderful story. Keep up the awesome work awesome 👍😘
How wonderful. Happy birthday!
I took a turn around your web page today and was astonished by the body of work! WOW.
(He's also very handsome, ladies 😉)
Why, thank you! I'm blushing...
❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🤍💖 yes he is !!
Simon's narration skills bring this oddly feverish tale to life---with all the urgency Conan Doyle wrote into it. Many thanks!
Thanks for your kind words Alexandra, so glad to know you enjoyed it, especially as I remember you were the first person to request it! Best wishes
@@BitesizedAudio Yes, and have you done the "Ring of Thoth" yet? That would be perfect in your voice. Again, we thank you...
I haven't, yet - I'm a big Conan Doyle fan, of course, but having done quite a few of his stories now I thought I'd give him a rest for a bit while I explore some other less well-known authors... however, I'll add it to my list and will keep it in mind for the future!
@@BitesizedAudio Yes, of course. And you have given us many other, less known authors of that same period. I especially have enjoyed the women writers whose sense of the supernatural and the esoteric matched and well exceeded Doyle's...Thank you, Simon. Be well.
I awoke to this story...so pleased I did! I went back to the beginning. Thanks for my introduction to non Holmes stories. Fantastic narration.
Did exactly the same!👍😉
I like the false hope where he thinks he is safe for a few nights. Of course the protagonist has no idea how far they've still got to go while we can see there's still time to run. Then the mounting urgency and panic when he does get the draw on him to go to her. Very well read; you made that story really exciting.
Wonderful! So perfect for these terribly cold days. Thank you again for this joy.
Glad to help! Thanks @Bunnylove314
A great story by one of the world's greatest authors. FYI - in many Victorian and Edwardian publications some of the homes of that era mention a piece of interior design known as a 'Wanscot' for those of the younger generation, it is wooden paneling that covers the wall from the floor at a hight of around 4ft. It is used to protect the walls and baseboards from scuffing by foot traffic and furniture that may cause damage to the walls. Usually made of fine imported woods.
wainscot actually !
@@stewartlancaster6155 Actually you are correct in correction of my English. Forgive me I'm not a native.
Simon Stanhope's voice and reading is outstanding....as recognisable as James Mason or Richard Burton...bliss!!
Thank you Sofia, I'm extremely flattered to be bracketed with such distinguished company!
They don't make men as loyal as the one in this story anymore! Thank you for another fantastic story! Cheers from across the pond! :)
You're welcome sugarfalls1, best wishes to you from this side of the pond!
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, genius! Love his work!
Thank you.
Thanks Diane. Yes, he's been one of my favourites since I first discovered Sherlock Holmes aged about 10. Always a pleasure to read
An excellent story, brilliantly read as always! Thank you so much.

One can forget how poetic ACD can be. Thank you for reminding me.
Wonderful reading, so much feeling in the dialog!
Can't beat Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Wow! Wonderful story about the struggle between science and mysticism.
I thought it was about struggle with addictions
@@annacschepis At the time, many people thought hypnosis was akin to mysticism and many still do.
Ooh, a long one! Always love your readings-some of the very best ever.
Thanks Scout Rifle!

His plea for a power greater than her wicked mesmerism is answered..
..his life is now his own.
I loved the ending, it was abrupt but absolutely enough to let us know he is free to love the love of his soul.
You read this masterfully, and it was a riverting revelation, Sir Conan is a master of his craft.
Yes indeed. Thanks BlaqueCzar, appreciate your comments
Thank you, I love listening to, and drifting off to sleep to your wonderful dulcet tones 😊😌
Thanks D G, sleep well!
Well ! That was quite gripping .very well narrated and so engrossing that I persevered through an unreliable internet connection to get to the end .I'm so glad to have found this channel ,listening to classic literature is a balm for a tired brain and there are so many gems here .
Wow congrats on the new longest story 😉 And I love your voice and that of the Greg 🙂 from the magpie audio 🙂
Thanks Daygon. Yes, I very much enjoy Greg's work too. And yes, this one was quite a marathon!
It's nice to hear someone still speak English with proper diction in 2021. A rarity in modern Britain. 👍
Kind of you to say so, thank you Jon
"The time for indecision was at an end. As long as the creature threatened my own prospects and my honor there might be a question as to what I should do. But now, when Agatha - my innocent Agatha - was endangered, my duty lay before me like a turnpike road."
What a mensch, this guy.
Ooh, I don’t know how I’ve missed this one for so long! Excellent 😀♥️
Well done Simon!! Such a great story and your narrative, marvelous!!
Thanks Vicki, glad to know you enjoyed it
.
Excellent as always, many thanks.
This was not my favorite kind of story but of course I would listen to you read anything at all; and Conan Doyle's style can be a bit difficult if there is little dialogue, but the surprise ending is like slamming your steady trotting coach into a brick wall. Very original work! I wonder you don't feel stress after having to act all these strong and disturbing emotions! Thank you!
We are 'dug in by choice' - Mardi Gras week, Jackson Square here in New Orleans is a chaotic and noisy brew. So, up in our cosy loft, the SkyCave - we cook, brew tea, and listen to your wonderful stories. Conan Doyle I think in private life, had a serious interest in the spiritual, mesmerism, psychic phenomena and such. My husband loves these, as do I. Always a delight. Thank you!!
This was fantastically narrated and wonderful to listen to. I tend to do my house chores while listening to your audiobooks, but this one, as long as it is wonderful; I couldn't focus on anything else but this so I just sat and enjoyed.
What a brilliant performance, Simon! Thank you kindly!
Kind of you to say so, thank you Rachel!
Excellent! So relaxing to listen to and extremely well read. I'm a big fan of this channel.
You are a serious pleasure to listen to… Awesome talent put to excellent use… You are not only a true professional you are an artist!!!
I could listen, as they say, to you reading the phonebook. It was a wonderful experience listening to you. Thank you for all your doing to preserve these stories and bring them to new people who may have never heard them, like me. Thank you sincerely.
Listening without beeibg bored to the telefone book read to you? But that would clearly be a sign of beeing in a mesmeric trance yourself!😂
Hello from Geneva, Switzerland. Thank you for the wonderful content!
You're most welcome, Valerie! Thanks for listening
How is the weather there?
Absolutely fantastic reading! Thank you so much.
Story is so good and amazingly well told . I can't believe that is another ACD story I have never heard before unless I've forgotten. Thank you so much for these readings. I love your voice and expression. Makes the story real. 👍🏼☺️
Thanks Gerry M, appreciate your feedback!
I know i commentn on this story too much, but each time i hear it i discover another treasure. Your voicing of Miss Penacosa (sp?) makes her sound insufferably disagreeable to talk to, listen to, or even look at. Very well done indeed sir, capital work. And Gilroys vanity about his looks creeps through in your characterization of him; he dwells too long upon his looks while describing himself and his affected indifference can be heard as you read his lines. You can tell he at least wants to be modest; and perhaps that makes his sin of mere vanity more easily forgiven. But it does not make it invisible. I feel that i have met these characters face to face. Much of that is the genius of the Great Man's writing; much of it is certainly your narration and acting prowess. I thoroughly enjoy myself every time i listen.
I think this is your best narration to date! Wonderful story, and telling. I always look forward to your postings, and save them up until I can savor them. Thank you so much for the extra long treat!
Very kind of you to say so Nancy, thank you!
Beautifully read. Thank you.
Thanks aunty, appreciated

Beautifully polished and appropriate delivery. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks Tony
Love Sir Aurthor. This was an excellent reading.
Thanks Mark, appreciated! Thank you for listening
Excellent, but very creepy Conan Doyle story, as usual perfect narration built even more tension than this story normally causes.
Thanks for another very scary story.✊♥️
Fantastic story that was fantastically read!

Wow. Masterpiece level performance! 👏👏👏 I feel we need to pay admission for this quality
Oh, if only I could stop seeing Edna E. Mode from the Incredibles films popping up in my head every time the evil woman speaks! 😫

new in this Chanel..thank you so much and I liked that this story is long than other stories..your reading is fantastic..thanks for the great work
@Razan Kalifa You're welcome, thanks so much for listening. Yes, this one is my longest to date. I tend to focus mainly on short (indeed "bitesized") stories, for various reasons, but am trying some longer pieces as and when I can fit them in.
Wonderful reading, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible story! Extra enjoyable because the speaker has the most wonderful voice :)
Very kind of you to say so, thank you!
i like these stories well read, old type reading ,classic, close youre eyes and imagine youre sat in a old cottage being read to by a ghost.
Superb, thoroughly enjoyed the story, the saying of what goes around comes around springs to mind
Excellent, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Irena
This story is very well read of course, by a skilled narrator. But darn it Arthur Conan Doyle!! Triggered my anxiety major, like being stuck in some nightmare world. But I’m stubborn and wanted to know how it ended so listened all the way through. Not what I would call a relaxing story, but others seem to have enjoyed it so it’s obviously just not everyone’s style :).
Fantastic story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! And wonderfully narrated. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for listening

Well, I just recently realized that you are the "Voice." Wonderful! I listened to this story last night, and I find that except for most of the ghost stories, which I don't fully listen to, because I live alone and they are sometimes scary, I have listened to and enjoyed all of your other stories.
Very kind of you to say so, thank you Kimberly, glad to know that.
Wonderful narration, especially could feel the range of emotions conveyed by your voice. On another note, chapter 1 alone would have made a pretty intriguing and cheerful short story 😉!
