I wouldn't mind the MT rider triangle at times, but my R7 is spectacular. The roads are tight and narrow where I live, so anything bigger/more powerful is diminishing returns and not really worth the cost. The 7 is agile and fast, with few mods.

The real question is could you upgrade suspension and brakes with the money you save buying an MT-07 with even better or just as good of components than the R7 has and end up with a way more well rounded bike for the streets because 90% of people won’t ever go to a track regularly.

    • @trailrider1980

Andreani cartridges go for $595 a basic nitron r1 schock probably around $650. So around 1400 just in components, no installation costs. At that point, it probably makes more sense to get a z900 or mt09. Both have better suspension than mt07, better chassis etc.

I ride a 2016 MT07 (FZ07) and the suspension def leaves huge room for improvement. Ive stiffened up the rear (I am a heavy guy) and dropped the front height on the forks by around an inch (I tried various different increments before deciding on that feeling the best for me). Dropping the front a bit completely changed the handling for the better in my opinion. It has quicker turn-in and a better ride for me which I am guessing is due to the front end being more a bit more loaded. I was really debating getting on the new R7 but after countless reviews and comparisons, Im leaning towards an MT09 next.

As an r3 owner the r7 should be an easy upgrade but I really hate that centre headlight look.

Get a R6, or a zx6r… the R7 is equivalent to a MT07. If you want a naked get a MT09 SP. if you are on the R3 you are ready for a R6 or zx6r. Even the MT09 SP, R7 you will get bored of quickly.

had read via press release that Yamaha had made some engine internal changes (materials?) for a nod toward durability on racetrack use. Not sure what that was, but that's what I read from press release.
But I swear, there must be some post-release committee that all Japanese bikes have to pass through before the bikes are shipped overseas. What does that post-committee do? It installs suspensions, installs headlights, and installs instrument displays on Japanese bikes. This committee doesn't ride motorcycles and Japan doesn't vet anything the committee does. That's the only way I can explain it.

R7 could have been more narrow with a V-twin and would’ve made a fun super sport. As of right now though, it has no reason to exist as a SS and is too slow for the price point. MT07 is a way more justified purchase, and can be lowered and given a windscreen to basically feel like an R7 anyway, not to mention the same potential for speed using the same gearing adjustments anyone would do to an R7 to get more pep🤷‍♂️

Any bike that is not too heavy, not too powerful, not too expensive and has ABS.
If sportsbikes are your thing, Ninja 300/400/650/ER6F, Yamaha R3/R7, KTM RC390, Honda CBR300/500... Most of them have a naked and adventure equivalent.
