I remember this storm so vividly. It was the very last day of year 11 and my bus (301 route to Toombul) dropped me off on Zillman road, about 1.5km from my house. I remember looking at the storm front rolling in and thinking, holy shit, I need to run home NOW. I was in school uniform with all my bags running home and I remember getting looks from people in their cars, meanwhile the storm was coming in closer. As I neared home it started raining and the storm was coming overhead, the blackest clouds I'd ever seen and I'd grown up in SEQ my whole life. As soon as I got through the door the hail started pelting down, I'd never seen anything quite like it. Was always glad I had the common sense to run home though
We were celebrating our first Thanksgiving away from home in Bowen Hills that day. This hit an hour before our party started. For reasons I cannot fathom, we still had a lot of Aussies brave this chaos in order to join us!
Brisbane looks wonderful. I love Australia. I wish i live there because i love the summer the whole year and the country is beautiful and going strong. And i love thunderstorms, but only no one is injured or worse. Only when no one is hurt i love these storms.
Summer in November. Living north of the equator, I forget that while I might be freezing my butt off, Y'all are enjoying the summer, well not that day anyway.
The image of the bus near the end is spooky as hell. I can't imagine would it would have been like to be on that bus during the storm. And the "Help! Call Police" display.....like one of those end of the world movies. Awesome video though, I love storms.
If memory serves correct, I was in Brisbane at the time this one hit. I followed it up after a trip to Goldie, through the city and nearly all the way to Petrie where I was living.
I remember this storm. I live at Kelvin Grove at the QUT campus and it was just beyond belief. Hail knocking out windows in the buildings and everything on my balcony destroyed. It was really really violent.
I remember when I was little I used to love the wizard of oz and when this storm happened and I was in Brisbane at the time I said "OUR HOUSE WILL LIFT UP INTO THE SKY LIKE DORITHYS!".
On that arvo, I managed to make it onto a train at Park Road once the hail began. The sound of hail pelting that train cabin was ridiculously loud. The train remained there for a few hours which gave me enough time to venture to UQ via bus to grab some dinner... saw a whole bunch of trees uprooted. Really sad site considering I did my undergrad and postgrad there.
I remember that storm. I’d just started my new job that week on the 21st floor of Riparian plaza. The windows in the building rattled and we saw a deck chair and someone’s clothes horse fly past the window, swept away from a nearby apartment building. (It landed on Friday’s roof). When the storm finished, the city smelt like a garden salad from all the freshly shredded leaves stripped off the trees. And so many cars had smashed out windows. The bus stops on Adelaide st were packed to the max with people as the trains were down.
I was sprinting home from work that afternoon because I could see the clouds, I was about 100m from home when it started pouring and I was soaking wet by the time I made it to my door lol.
So over the years I've learned beyond seeing clouds like that, if the wind starts to pick up really bad then seek shelter. Because you'll usually have little time before all hell breaks loose
I still remember that day. I was in Brisbane south side celebrating my mums birthday and we all just stood in the backyard and watched that beast roll in, as it got close you could actually hear it roaring.
"Help!!! Call police" is right...while the windshield wipers wave ineffectually back & forth in the air... During the first ride across the bridge, notice the distinct green color in the clouds on the left. That's always a very foreboding sign in an approaching storm.
I remember this storm. I was in the city that morning, and I had a gut feeling that something big was coming, so I left the city and got home as fast as I could, I didn't want to be stuck in the city with a storm coming.
I remember reading in the paper about a woman in the Logan area where it was really bad whose car windows had been smashed in by the hail so she used her own body to protect her baby. She was covered in massive bruises with a big cut on her face. It was strange because the northern part of Brisbane I lived in was barely touched, just trees and some power lines taken down, debris etc. To read how someone was almost battered to death by hailstones was surreal.
I was in a bar in Southbank when this storm hit, a woman came rushing in from the hail with a shredded umbrella and blood all over her face and head...
I remember that storm. I nearly finished year 1 when that happened. My grandparents picked me up and said ‘WE HAVE A BIG STORM COMING, WE DONT HAVE TIME TO GO TO MACDONALDS, WE NEED TO GET HOME BEFORE IT HITS US. We went home and during that storm, we lost power for a couple of days. A couple of hours after we lost power. We went to my aunties and uncles house to pick up some candles and then returned home. The alarm was going off so my grandfather turned it off while my grandmother and I were in bed. My parents were in England then. A couple of days later, the power is back on.

Never had a problem the next time things started getting Stormy. The Boss even had us park our cars inside the next time we had a severe hailstorm.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, the Insurance companies wrote off tens of thousands of cars as a result of this storm because it hit in peak hour as everyone was heading home from work and were caught in the open. They had such a backlog of claims that even lightly-damaged cars more than a couple of years old were being sent the the auction yards. Took them six months to clear the stock. I bought three in good condition for about $500 each and gave them to the rellies to replace the unroadworthy wrecks they were driving.
