Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989.
Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.
A 20-minute version of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" is followed by a 12- minute but incomplete "I'm Going Home." After a souped-up version of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," Lee and the band close with two of their own hits: "Choo Choo Mama" and "Baby, Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You."
One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both the Fillmore East and West, and of course, Winterland.
By the time this show was recorded. TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues, and jazz. In 1972, the band would leave Decca Records (the label that signed them in 1967), and move to Columbia's corporate home. Columbia would take the band in a more radio friendly/pop driven direction (hence, the hit single "I'd Love To Change The World"). Frustrated with the popular music trend, Alvin Lee left the band, which disbanded soon after the second Columbia release in 1975.
The original lineup made one reunion LP and did one more tour in 1988/89 before disbanding again. In 2003, Ric Lee assembled the group again, although Alvin would not participate. He was replaced by guitarist Joe Gooch, and the band is still recording and touring today. Видеоклипы
Was a freshman in college 1970. Alvin & TYA + Leslie West & Mountain played in small venue on our campus. My ears are still bleeding!
What a night of great rock.
Alvin was a guitar legend.
I was at this concert! I saw Alvin play and he completely blew away the whole crowd! We were blown out by Alvin and the band! I have never seen anyone since and will never see anyone like him!!
Bass player pluckin’ the hell outta that thang!❤️👍🏼
Here's to Alvin Lee and Ten Years After; as long is there are people, there will be rock and roll like this to hear.
WOW...Saw these guys back in the 70.s...back when music was music
Saw them in 70 as well at The Shrine Auditorium, AWESOME!
One of the best Guitar and Bass jams that is never mentioned.
Alvin Lee is one of those guitarists whose style is so unique you can name him after hearing a handful of notes. I first heard him as a teenager (on 8-track tapes from the flea market :) and have loved his music for 50 years. His bassist was no slouch either!
Yes
Leo Lyons. He posts here at youtube. Very nice man. Inciteful, quite a story teller. I suggest you take a look if you're a Ten Years After fan.

Ten Years After needs to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame !!!
Not the fake hall of fame
@@KevinOshea-wt2ps
You maybe right . Shame it is :(
Yes
He came he played had fun did not care about fame.Very gracious player God bless ❤
It's crystal clear why a black & white vid of such an old performance has blown past 2Mil youT hits. This band was the complete package. TOP tier talent that was every bit as good and passionate as the headliners of their day that have received more recognition. But then again, I don't need anyone's seal of approval to see musical brilliance.
I am 70 and I still own ever vinyl record they produced and I bought them when they were first issued. Near mint condition.
you can't have listened to them much then!
Великолепный гитарист наша молодостьмы росли на этой музыке какое было офигительное время!
Good old rock n roll. Where is today?
It's outside go and see.
Ten Years after was the -st concert I went to. It was absolutely a good more than what I could ever imagine! 👍🏽 for Alvin Lee!!
I’ve never seen any bass player, play so fast. Amazing!!!
quelle perf. pour moi Alvin Lee est un des cinq meilleurs guitaristes au monde, une technique incroyable, rapidité, précision dans le blues comme dans le rock. Respect Mr Lee merci pour toutes ces belles chansons.
Brilliant guitar playing these guys made some amazing music in the 70s brings back many good memories
I rank him as one of the top blues guitarist of all time!!!! he was extremely underrated and underappreciated….
Got that!
There’s those words again…
@@JamesFolkers We did not underrate or underappreciate them AT ALL... moneywise perhaps they should have made much more yes......
I agree one of Alvin Lee one of the best blues rock guitar just playing Kick-Ass guitar he's the top three Jimi Hendrix Mark Farner but there's more than three Eric Clapton not as good as those guys I don't think Ritchie Blackmore amazing.
I think he started the word bawl you b a w l we all used it in the 60s. Rockstar started the song the words the cool words that their fans used.
One of my favorite bluesmen of all time. His guitar dripped with what he was feeling.
It doesn't get any better than this! Alvin was an amazing bad ass guitar player!
one of my all time favorite bands! still have all their albums
Fifty years after - still amazing!
And always will be...😍
I was born in 53 too. I loved that band.
@@pash9956 Oufff I was not 😅✌
As I listen to this music now, in 2021, this music seems more brilliant than ever, especially the guitar virtuosity of the brightest lights in that generation. Hope for a revival before we're all dead! ('48)
Amen.
Everyone in this band was a top notch musician. Alvin is definitely my all time favorite guitar player.
Rick Lee was an incredibly underrated drummer, he was exceptionally good.
Yes, he was a good player. He was also my introduction to the Gibson ES335.
Yup. Alvin has no peers. Doubt if he ever will at this point.
Leo Lyons and Chick Churchill were also unsung TYA members. TYA was a one-in-a-million combo of very talented indivuduals.
That is because his peers could play and he couldn't. @@patriciastone3501
Alvin Lee he always gave his band members credit when credit was due Leo Lyons
Fantastic bass playing
One of the greatest guitarist and bass player that ever lived
Have you ever seen really good guitarist/bass player interaction, like say Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady?
I had a stand-up bass and I'd try to keep up with Leo on this song. Impossible but made my heart beat and my fingers sore.
Saw them 56 years ago at the Fillmore West, San Fransisco. Savoy Brown opened the show with Hellbound Train. I still feel that music vibrating thru the old ballroom floor
I'm 60 and when I get to introduce kids born in 1980s to TYA I feel like Daddy does watching his kids open Christmas gifts! Great music is ageless.
Randy Nixon
Leo Lyons is playing his guts out, incredible bassist!
He has too, to keep up with alvin
Indeed !
After this show he threw in the towel and became a record producer.
You an't bullshitin!
And he still is!
Catch their performance in "Woodstock," the film. Insane, split screen comin atcha, made that -Twenty years On!!
I imagine that performance beyond Infinity...
People keep typing that Alvin Lee was most underrated. He was voted fastest guitar player back in the early seventies. Yes lots of people today have no idea who he is or who TYA is. Only great ears know of them. Thus everyone on this site qualifies.
LOL he wasn't underrated back in our day. Far from it. Ten Years After were one of the high points of Woodstock.
At seventeen at my age gone to sequoia califas and jam beautiful park don't know whats going now a days
Who doesn 't know Alwin Lee? Who knows Woodstock, knows him. But in fact, who doesn' t know the Tean Years After-records from Frankfurt Main, doesn' t know the Music-Hystory! Best Wishes A.
Alvin was Alvin he said it too. RIP ALVIN
But i see ...Lory Gallagher be in the same league ... and quite similar style to Alvin Lee . ... imo
I loved this band, and that Leo Lyon's could kick some ass on that bass!
Alvin Lee and Ten Years After were something else.....a ticket for their shows was worth more than gold.....
Sometimes I forget how good Alvin lee was so I come back time and again to watch him and make my jaw drop again 😊
Hiya Robin. I've the same memories, and I'm checking them out at the moment. You really should watch anything by Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer at about the same time, and see how he wasn't quite the fastest guitar player he was made out to be. I think it was the edited section of the film Woodstock that promoted that fact. I think I saw him after JW and RD at Lancaster University in 1972, and he really wasn't in the same class. But fond memories. Keep safe. Nick, not quite the good bass slapper. 🤓
Yeah, same here. I just watched his performance of going home from Woodstock again. It looks wired tight and he doesn’t miss a note
👍 Alvin has some great facial expressions to go along with his blistering guitar playing!
Lyons and Lee have more energy bottled up in them than a case of uppers. Especially Leo! Entertaining as hell just to watch, never mind to listen to.
Guitar incredible Band fantastic monster Alvin lee
Nobody rocks out like this anymore, makes me glad we have this. Wildest bass style I've seen. More please!
I hear ya. I'm getting a cramp just watching that dude.
That's because they are musicians. It is wild, but is it playing? I can "play" like that, and I am not a musician.
@@raymondpierotti8414yes it is playing. You couldn't do that
I am talking about the bass player. I could in fact do what he does, but I don't want to look like a fool. @@victorantoniocontrerasbarr3369
Yes they do , just gotta listen out for it. The youngsters are keep it alive.

I was 15 in 1973 and 10 years after was My 2nd concert ever. A space in time had been released a year earlier and Alvin and the Boys Kicked Ass ! The opening act that night was a new band that I had never heard of , Z Z Top . What a night !
This band blew everyone away back then, good times...
Another great version by a wonderful talented band that should be in the rock n-roll hall of fame
To really appreciate Alvin Lee's speed ffirst, listen to Johnny Winter play. Good morning, little school girl, then listen to Alvin Lee play. Good morning, little school girl Johnny. Winter is an exceptionally fast guitar player. But the difference in speed between the two Johnny Winter never ever got out of first gear while Alvin Lee has at least 10 speeds and he was in 10th gear... I was lucky enough in nineteen seventy five I got to see johnny winter and alvin lee together.... But unfortunately, Alvin Lee was not with 10 years after... the name of the band was Alvin Lee and company......peace
I believe the phrase you are looking for is "speed-freak guitar". A Reviewer for Rolling Stone once said, imagine someone coming up and talking to you the way Lee plays guitar.@@BuckrBill
... great Alvin Lee ... !!! the best !!!
TRY AND PICK THE BONES OUT OF THAT I DARE, 2 OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS EVER TO GRACE THE STAGE, THANK THE ROCK GODS WE HAVE THESE CLIPS.
Freaking amazing style and skill
You guys aren't lying. Holy smokes. And I saw him live once in Chicago. Jesus Mary and Joseph. Smoking.
I guess I'm actually pretty lucky because the original ten years after played at the international amphitheater in Chicago when I was a pup still in 1978. Anybody could tell you that the amphitheater was a good venue back in those days. It's long gone now. Be nice to have a tape of that show. JAM productions used to be a big promoter that booked those shows. The bass player is phenomenal.
That hypnotic, sultry riff....Yeah....
Seen em 4 time in st.louis..back in the day
This never gets old I love it
Great song I was into Ten Years After since Woodstock Alvin Lee was underated but Sooo quick He can bring it no doubt whoever hes jamin with
Ten Years After was the greatest Formation in this time, the bassman Leo Lyons and the one and lonely Alvin Lee R.I.P. grandios.
I was a little school girl (13) when this album came out and I blasted this song every afternoon when I got home...much to my parents’ dismay and concern...saw TYA in NOLA in the seventies and knew they were underrated even then. There was just such a wealth of talent in that era! I’m glad I grew up enjoying my incredible youth to such an unbelievably great musical background!
So many great songs from this band. Most people only know of the Woodstock show. I miss those days.✌❤
I'm 67' but back in the day I had Cricklewood Green on 8 track
Well said Deborah, TYA were also my inspiration as a schoolboy. I am so jealous you actually saw them, Alvin was a remarkable guitarist and much underrated in modern times. And I bet you were a hot schoolgirl too ha ha
Awesome
Yes I hear you, It’s very similar now in our post COVID pandemic era, life was so good in 2017-19 then all hell broke the yoke.
TYA wore me out. I screamed so hard all concert long. Yes Alvin you are my favorite. You are missed. Kick butt group
The bass player is amazing......Alvin was a Guitar God......
Agreed bass player rocked .amazing guy whatttt kind of energy.
Leo and Gerry McAvoy both get into playing wwe with their entire bodies. So bitchin.
I sure do miss everything that could have been Alvin. You left too soon. RIP
Alvin Lee always a gracious gentleman gave a bow then an applause to his bandmate Leo Lyons what a Legend!!
Saw these guys on their A Space In Time tour..one of the greatest concerts I have seen
.and I have seen hundreds
A Space In Time was my favorite album of theirs !
These guys helped us out alot, during our 'time in space'!
I have just seen them live today here in Sardinia, Italy. Perfect execution, competent musicians, audience well entertained, beautiful pure rock. I am impressed and pleased.
The filming shows the friendship of the bassman Leo and Alvin. This is a legendary filming about ten years after. The music goes to jazz trough Leo because he is so musical.
Bought the album, fired it up at top volume in my catholic, all boys dorm room!! Had the priests running down the hallway looking for the offender!!
Love that Bass 😁
my most favorite guitarist when i was a teen,he's still ranks as one of the best in my opinion. iv'e got ``ten years after'' all over my pandora.
Good on ya Chris.
My favorit in 52 years
Wasn't the beatles or the stones that got me listening to rock n roll. Love like a man and I need more and more of TYA
One of the things I can certainly say about this group they know how to keep perfect time. 1970s were the best
saw him at Berkeley, my friend said he was OD'ing on the LSD we were on and wanted to go to the hospital, before Alvin came on
I told him that we were all OD'ing and to hang it out....superply humorous
and no, I didn't miss Alvin Lee and my friend
survived
😂😂😂 that’s an awesome story
Your friend can take the bus. pick him up with the schoolgirl at the state hospital
I saw Ten Years After, King Crimson and Robin Trower in 1974 in Fort Worth. There was some amazing guitar playing that night.
I saw that concert in Ft.Worth also and there will never be shows like that again raw!
I bet there was!!!
ya some oldies but goodies : )
That would of been a awesome concert
Saw the same show in Cleveland that year. Incredible music!
Some of the best bass playing you`l ever see/hear .
He played with Canned Heat at Woodstock
dynamic explosive bass
Hell to the yeah on that bass, I'm so mesmerized by this !!!!!
He was also the producer of one of my favorite bands of all time - UFO!!!!!!!
Wow, I have only just come across this clip and yes, it seriously looks at first like Larry Taylor from Canned Heat on bass. Same mannerisms etc. What a Monster of the Bass! But it turns out to be an equal monster, Leo Lyons. Respect!
That’s the best, purest rock and roll ever! That rock and roll is deeply rooted in the old blues artists like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Buddy Guy, BB King, etc…
You can see the unmistakable transition from that to this. WOW! Oh wow!
💈💈💈. This is definitely the best lead from Alvin Lee, and Bass from Leo Lyons it is just super if you play an instrument- speaking of which, I can’t leave the superior drum work from Rick Lee out of this 3 pack- - 10 years after !
Great dynamic of the show... perfect control over instruments.. Wow
Amazing speed and with such emotion, ALVIN LEE, TEN YEARS AFTER, so Blessed to have watched them Live
These guys should have been way more popular than they were! Still loving listening to them in 2020! Never gets old! 💕
They were popular around these parts.

Not sure why I see this so much about legendary bands I grew up with, saying weren't very popular simply weren't around back then. Maybe read 📚 up little bit or wiki
Saw Ten Years After three times back in the 70s - and was on to the band long before the Woodstock movie made them superstars. Sad that Alvin is gone.
He was the most underrated guitar player ever!!
OH MY GOD... When I was 11 years old back in 2001 i had this crusty cassette tape from my dads collection of rock music and while i never knew who they were, this song was on a mix he made and I just loved it but lost it and for the life of me just couldnt find it UNTIL NOW!!
That,s fucked up! I was 44 ad we love the same music. I guess talent never dies!
Alvin Lee has kept a smile on my face since Winterland in 74 and I am 60 now. Damn good Rock and Roll.

You lucky bastard.
Loved Ten Years After! Especially this song!
This band was a staple in my circles.
Great band, I especially like their early blues material.
I still remember the very first time I heard this song and was introduced to Ten Years After and Alvin Lee. Amazing!
BayAreaBlues Isn't that a great memory? I love those. Where you were, who you were with, what drugs you were doing, the whole everything- and of course, how it made you feel. Music keeps me sane. Thank G-d for music!
1977 I was 17 and drove from Boston to Fitchburg, Mass to see these guys, great live band.
GREAT John! I'm Angel. From Chile.
I was 12 or 13 when I heard Alvin et. al I don't know why folks still aren't discovering what rockin out is all about

This song is so good, look how fast the bass player is. AWESOME!
You are absolutely right he shreds the bass
In deed iv listend, 2 this band for 5& a 1/2 Decades unreal,
He’s definitely great, but seems like his blood is about 50% amphetamines by volume. He’s thumping that bass so hard I expected to see bloody streaks all over that nice white shirt of his.
