    Jean-Yves had a phenomenal fight record of 𝟲𝟵 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝟲𝟭 𝗯𝘆 𝗞𝗢𝘀),
    Widely recognized by his colleagues, he was named Full Contact Fighter of the Year in 1983 by the American magazine Black Belt
    𝟮𝟯 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀! 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁.
    A few of Theriault high profile victories include two wins against future four time K-1 champion Ernesto Hoost and a draw against the legendary Don "the Dragon" Wilson. He has also fought world champions Rob Kaman, Jean-Yves has bad back problems and pain, so he had to end the fight prematurely.

    When I started kickboxing in the early 90s, my trainer said, "I'm going to call you Iceman, like Therriault." I was honored and said, "Wow, do you really think I fight like him?" He laughed and said, "absolutely not. But you do kinda look like him." :D

    One of the greatest kickboxers of all time. Theriault has a book he put out years ago, that helped me greatly to learn kickboxing many years ago. His boxing was so far superior to so many of his opponents. Along with great kicks of course too.

      His boxing was so far superior to so many of his opponents along with great kicks AND the fact that he had God like power behind his punches. Oh, and I still have his book in my collection. I personally favor his book over "Complete Kickboxing" by Livingston and Sprague and that is possibly the most popular kickboxing book in existence right now.

    I am now 80 years old, and I’ve been in martial arts for 62 years, I watched John he Theriault fight in Detroit, and was honored to shake his hand and to this day I realize I shook the hand of a legend I believe the best of the best

    His punching technique is superior, even by elite boxing level standards. His form rivals Joe Louis and Alexis Arguello. Astonishing. Even all these years later.
    Had he been a boxer, he probably would have been an undisputed champion.

      Actually, if he was a boxer he would never make it farther than the regional competition. Because of very few people doing this kick-boxing, he was able to be on top with such a poor technique and poor stamina. Moving around like a slow-motion film and having absolutely no killer instinct.     This guy had what Julian Jackson had, natural born dynamite in his punches. He naturally punched SO HARD you can see the reaction in his opponents faces. It is the same reaction that that Julian Jackson's opponents had.

    I always loved how Theriault walked them down and picked them apart like it was a doddle. If you could somehow combine him and Don Wilson you'd get pretty much the perfect fighter. As it is, it's extremely enlightening to compare and contrast their very different but similarly dominating in-ring styles.

    I remember back in the 80's in Taekwondo circles the fighter that we all followed was Jean-Yves, he was an amazing puncher, knew exactly when to throw a kick and when/how use the leading leg kick with punching combinations. He was knocking everybody TF out. When Rufus fought him, it proved his top side power was amazing. Nearly went out see him fight a couple of times, but it didn't come off, so it was the mags/VHS tapes. Would have loved to see him in K1 and try MT circuit too. A natural if ever there was one.

    I think The Iceman would of done as well in MMA as he did in PKA with some additional training in grappling / jui jitsu but it's hands and feet that you have to get by... that straight as an arrow focus of a tiger and he went straight in straight up n took care of business. A Canadian Sports Legend who deserved a lot more praise and appreciation. He was to kickboxing what no man in Canada has remotely accomplished in boxing....

      Am I correct, if I recall that as it began, you were allowed almost any strike but you had to wear some type of pad like on elbows etc, this was befire it moved into boxing rings

    plus he was earning lots of money for that time...for a sport not popular as boxing etc. he was earning around 150k per fight at career peak...in the 80s 1 million was almost like no ending money for the rest of your life
