      Litjoy has had a subscription service for awhile. They just redid their book subscription service. They retired their magical crate and then rebranded/renamed their book subscription. Before it was called YA crate and they had themes for each box and didnt get a choice of what book or items you got. Now it is TBR and you get to chose 1 of 2 books, with the possibility to add the other book to your box as an add on. Then you can pick 1 or both items from each level if depending on which book/item subscription you pick. Plus you can have add ons as well.

    For people in the UK that are hoping to get some special editions second-hand, Vinted is an amazing option. I’ve perused Fairyloot editions, and Illumicrate books on there that aren’t ridiculously marked up. It’s not just clothes on there. I bought the Fairyloot editions of The Diviners series on there for a very reasonable price.
    You might even be lucky and find a unicorn in Oxfam books. Honestly. There have been special editions of books in my local Oxfam bookshop.

    My go to is Litjoy because of a) my lunacorn membership and they sell their stuff at the same time consistently so it is hard to miss them and b) it is the company that got me into special editions.
    I think for sprayed edges, I want to learn to do that myself because I don’t want to spend 30 dollars just for sprayed edges.
    Oh and Etsy is a good place for dust jackets and custom books and the prices vary. I love my Caraval ones that I got for 45 dollars before shipping. They are beautiful and you can see the love the seller put into it.
    I had a couple of successful purchases on Mercari, but I can see how not every seller is trustworthy. You can’t tell. What I try to do is read the reviews and judge by the quantity first (ie. 400 reviews) and how many consistently give good reviews.

    I've sold a couple of my Fairyloot editions and other books through Mercari. Used it the most in 2020/21, and I always made sure my stuff was shipped next day or 2 after it was purchased. Mercari actually sends notifications to the seller to ship it within 3 days.. I do like the safety measures in place of Mercari not letting the transaction go through if you never get the item. I've heard WAY to many horror stories of Ebay for both buyers and sellers.
    Sad that the person couldn't be honest with you. Definitely using Pango from now on though, now that it's around.

    Folio Society is not all super expensive editions. They do do some like that but you can also get other books for around £30-40 UK. In addition I wouldn't put them in the newsletter category because many of their books are available to buy for years, it's only the very limited release ones which can sell out quickly.
    In the UK at least it's often possible to find older Folio editions second hand for a decent price - the company has been going a long time. Older ones may not have as many illustrations or other features as modern editions but they are generally in a slipcase.

  • @ladyfox6705
    @ladyfox6705 Год назад +1

    I live in a country very far away, so freight charges are astronomical, therefore I don't get any subscription boxes. I have some older series, like Star Wars & Gormenghast, where I have some of the old '80s covers and am trying to find the ones I'm missing in 2nd hand bookstores. Then, I've got some beautiful editions of favourites, like The Witcher, the LoTR, illustrated Princess Bride, illustrated Gormenghast, Berserk deluxe editions etc.
    It's nice to have a matching set of beautiful editions of favourites, but they're mixed in with my older books, too, '80s covers, Penguin Black Spines for my classics, some Barnes & Nobles for my Lovecraft.
    My biggest score was at a book fair, where I found a Folio edition of Anna Karenina for $4 NZ (c.$2.40 US.)
    Oh, & if I were rich I'd get the Dark Souls & Bloodborne books by the Irish publisher Tune & Fairweather who have exceptional quality and care in their books. Their Abyssal Archive & Blood Echoes editions would be my first buys!

    The Broken Binding is my go-to. I've got their editions of Faithful and the Fallen (John Gwynne), The Licanius Trilogy (James Islington), The Malevolent Seven (Sebastian de Castell), Of Blood and Fire (Ryan Cahill), Darkwater Legacy 1 & 2 (Chris Wooding), and the Children of Time Trilogy (Adrian Tchaikovsky).
    I'm not a subscriber. I just hope there's still some left over for a general sale. I discovered them too late, so I had to get a few of these second-hand, but since I've been paying attention, I've been able to grab what I want.

    • @riva7rau

      I don't have as many of the subscription series as you do, but they are also my go to for special editions. I own maybe 10 of their special editions non-subscription books, including several that you mentioned. I managed to get a leftover First Law trilogy set from then once they put the leftovers on general sale. One day I hope to get a subscriber invitation...

  • @riva7rau
    @riva7rau Год назад +1

    One thing I like about The Broken Binding is that they purposely keep some stock of their special editions available for their general sale. They now have two tiers of subscription - tier 1 is signed and numbered editions, tier 2 is not signed or numbered but otherwise the same - and subscribers get first chance at any exclusive editions that they offered apart from their subscription books. Since they have an incredibly long waitlist, it's nice to know that there is a chance for us mere mortals to purchase their exclusives. Several other of the companies that you mentioned routinely sell out just to their subscribers and end up canceling their general sale. With the Broken Binding a challenge for us in the USA is that that they are a British based company, sometimes (usually) their exclusive books go on sale at 4:00 am Pacific time in the US, and you are paying a lot for shipping from Britain to the US. That being said, I have bought a lot of their exclusive editions though I will be more discriminating going forward because of the shipping cost, and a lack of room on my bookshelf!

    I don’t mind the early notice. When issues arise is when people buy multiple copies (which makes sense because they are gifting them as well as getting one of their own) depriving the public from a chance.
    And sometimes, I wish if a company knows how popular they are they can provide more copies from the beginning.

The person was a week+ late shipping the book and then it showed up smelling like old cigarettes. 🤢 Mercari won't give you a refund for that because "they can't confirm a smell" .... so if you submit one asking for a return/refund they leave it up to the seller. :/ I really like Pango, but more often I get people who just don't ship and it auto cancels. @@WinonaCH to be fair, that already includes shipping worldwide with DHL Express, which nobody else does to my knowledge. Still very expensive for the numbered and lettered tier, since Sherlock they have a "Library Edition" though at around 200€. That is the same price range many Subterranean and Grim Oak books land in and gets you Letterpress printing and the same careful design.
      As high end goes, it's a pretty good value, but I absolutely see that it is still very expensive in total terms.

    Last one:
    Does anyone have a limit of how many editions of the same book or series?
    Mine for Harry Potter is 2 maybe three.
    I think with my other ones, it is just one.

      I could do a similar video on this for the UK but Fairyloot, Illumicrate and Waterstones are all UK as I'm sure you know and for second hand I suggest Vinted and World of Books

      Goldsboro, Broken Binding and Inkstone (a fairly new one) are all UK based 🙂

      High end UK based (higher than Folio Society) would be Curious King Books and Lyra's Books, as well as Arete Editions. All those are handbound and Letterpress printed.
