- Joan Chen is one of the most widely recognized and respected Asian stars in the international film industry. She began her movie career at age of 14 in Shanghai. Her performance in the films “Youth” and “Little Flower” catapulted her to fame in China. For her breakthrough performance in the title role of Little Flower, Chen garnered the Best Actress Award in China in 1980 when she was 19.
In 1981, Chen left China for the United States to study film at California State University, Northridge, where she graduated with honors. In the US, Joan has appeared in over 40 film and television roles. The most notable were Bernardo Bertolucci's Oscar-winning “The Last Emperor” (1987), David Lynch's “Twin Peaks” (1990), and Oliver Stone's “Heaven and Earth” (1993). At the same time, Chen continued to make films for Asian audiences. Her memorable performance in the Chinese language film “Red Rose and White Rose” won her Best Actress in the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Critics’ Awards in 1994.
In 1997, Chen made her directorial debut with the critically acclaimed “Xiu Xiu, The Sent-Down Girl,” a story of the loss of innocence of a young girl during the cultural revolution in China. The film was released in May 1999 and has received numerous awards internationally. In 2000, Chen was honored by the National Board of Review with the International Freedom of Expression Award for “Xiu Xiu.” In the same year, Chen was voted as one of the “10 Directors to Watch" by Variety.

I am really touched by this powerful speech. She is such a great story-teller.
She clearly gets it from her grandmother
A wonderful thread in our american tapestry!
An intelligent, articulate, thoughtful woman.
Easy on the eyes as well !
Thanks for choosing the USA ! Our country is better for your choice.!
What??? Are you a comedian? A blind and deaf nation, who didn't see and didn't hear the plights of the 99% crying but
only protecting the 1% on the expenses account of everyone else. Looking your homeless permeated every single cities in the US, look the wars that American loved bombed the world to Stone Age. Now Ukraine, next push by the US in pipeline is
Taiwan. Man, wake up see the truth and tell the reality.
Empress Ula-Nara looks very different in this video 😲
Wonderful speech and I truly loved her film, Xiu Xiu - The Sent Down Girl. Why this film is not restored, remastered and not able to see a digital blu-ray release is beyond me.
This is an absolute awful film as "Xiuxiu". I, as a key wetness during that period, rarely or even never saw or heard of any of the scene "noveled" by Yan Geling's high "imagination", and directed by Chen Chong (Joan) who created by her imaged horrible scene. This Chen's speech just reflected her quite suite into another reality as a perfect opportunist. Many Chinese foreign students are opportunists as an American Admission Officer, a well-known Chinese Expert's wife, firmed asserted, angrily. Chen, is not exceptional, but as a normal and formal
dumbness of an easily brain-washed human (Manchurian Candidate), when into another reality, rather a great decent human with integrity. In Chinese, called "入乡随俗", ironically.
As long as denounce her or their own original country or motherland, as a political agenda, their "arts" will gain another hemisphere's strong welcome and loud applauds 👏。 啊啊😯 . Even westerners selves realized this too, as a weak point in west.
The question is, dare Chen Chong or/& Yan Geling attack west by saying their hypocrites, or tell west public you mistake many numbers and events and incidents in my original country, though many absurdities did/ do happen, just like in west?
great story telling speach. among all my mothers favorite star of their generation, joan is the only one that shows her taste.
Sorry for your grandpa. Many suicides in China then were actually murder. Hope you will help the rest of the Committee 100 understand the question what would happen to them without America, not the other way around… And lives of Chinese matter also, then decide how CCP can be treated.
Are you still walking dreaming? When everyone else in the world already woke up to see the atrocities that US committed against "Humanities" globally.
In my opinion, she is the most beautiful Shanghai actress.
wow this speech is just completely slept on. must share expeditiously.
Great organization? I think you are greater than the rest that you had the courage to tell that story. Please consider making more movies about the Cultural Revolution from other Chinese authors. The world needs to see more tragedies made by the CCP.
wow story telling is really an awesome skills

What an impact this speech made on me.
This is such a beautiful life story though sad and triumphant ♥️
🤩
幼儿时就有外婆培养,那么英语是陈的“母语”。So, nothing great.,nothing great at all! Chen, Listen, can you stop charming some people by attacking your motherland China??????上海外语学院不是很难考入啊,特别对于上海人来说。Some of your English pronunciation is sick.
take it easy
@@pengguo5234 Truth needed. to be known. So no one sleeping in dream land.

@@joellis5915 They r just playing it on to each other, don't believe in it. Wake up. However good new yr of 2023!
wow, her english is so good, however, she still mentioned her brother "She" once (at 9"11). hahaha.
不要吹毛求疵啦 中国人说中文也会有口误,何必挑剔she and he
她是在双语环境下长大的。没啥!
Joan, came across this! Absolutely eloquent and you are as beautiful as you were years ago in college.
@@seagreen6442 she's absolutely an opportunist, rather a person sticks to his/ her sound and firm principles. Yan Geling later on too. American insiders consider many Chinese students in overseas are absolute opportunists. When I heard on that, I didn't argue, rather silently agreed. Easily to be brain washed are common features on Chinese, no matter where you go, by "入乡随俗” to gain opportunities. Yes, for survive, maybe.
But for public propaganda, will be another story.
