You have such wonderful ideas. I made a quilt and another quilt top 22 years ago. I bought a small jelly roll a few years ago...loved the colors...thought it would look good in placemats and today I finished binding a quilt that I made from it. I took it to my local quilt shop and a lady there used her long-arm to quilt it for me. I am not brave enough nor smart enough (yet...but I am running out of time here) to quilt it on my regular machine...I think there might be a brainstorm coming for that. Yesterday, I finished the top for a Christmas Tree wall hanging. Since I work from a small dining room table and my ironing board (I live in an apartment), I took it to my quilt shop and the nice young lady said she would square it up for me so I can add my borders. Next I am making two Minecraft quilts for my grandchildren. I have many squares cut, my plan is made but I had to get more colors to complete the picture. Tomorrow I start the final cutting for the squares. It is going to be an engineering feat if I can make it work. How can you tell I am having fun here. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas for the foam core board. I have been using empty (and washed) large peanut jars for my threads of different sizes stacked on a shelf in my linen closet...and a plastic bin for my serger thread cones. I do love the foam core board trays...great idea...Thank you!
Love the doohickey (yep, it is a word). It's a tracing wheel. Don't throw it away. Another use for it is when doing foundation paper piecing. I scour all my lines on the papers with a tracing wheel before I get started at the sewing machine. I needed to go out and buy one. It took me ages rummaging around in dark corners of old draperies calling out, "Come to me little doohickey. Come out, come out, wherever you are." With all your wonderful videos it will be no time at all before those drawers are empty with all the projects you've created and taught us how to make. Next video please: All the uses for my old and trusty doohickey.
I have my mom's old tool similar to the one you used to perforate the foamboard. It's a pattern tracer. With the addition of a special blue-inked transfer paper, you could place your pattern on your fabric and trace the pattern lines without cutting completely through the original pattern paper. Nice to know the tool might have a new use.

Oh, good idea. I use shoe boxes for toiletries, and all sorts of other belongings, but never thought of them for sewing items, duh! Now, my head is buzzing with ideas. Thanks.
Thanks for these DIY tips....although, I'm not too good with glue guns. I tend to get 'stuck' to the surfaces I'm gluing! Btw, IKEA sells SKUBB boxes with compartments. Perfect inserts for inside drawers and already have compartments - boxes with smooth linings for all fabrics, etc . I use them to organize pieces of fabrics - also for my lingerie drawers. No gluing required! Note: they're not as cheap as DIY w/foam board - but so worth it! :)
This post may be 3 yrs old but it saved me. My small room is 1/2 office and 1/2 sewing room, (thank you Covid). No drawers just 4 each two drawer lateral files. This solution is perfect for the drawers that are not being used. Thank you for your organizational skills.
Would you believe I was just talking with someone last night about needing more STORAGE for my sewing "room"! I actually have my sewing room in my living room b/c my craft room is upstairs and I don't really want to up there. Anyway...THANKS YOU Karen for these AWESOME TIPS. I'm going to getting my foam broad today and getting this project started!
I love how your mind works!!! And I love the fact that you come up with super practical ideas that are pocketbook friendly. I happen to have what used to be an old style cabinet that was sold as an kitchen island many years ago. Hubby got it for more kitchen storage space under a small bow window. It’s about the size of an old dresser. What I finally got my quilt room (last son moved out) and we no longer needed the ‘kitchen island’ cabinet, I had hubby put it on large rollers and add a good size piece of plywood to the top. This gives me a great cutting table on rollers so easy to move out for cutting and move back when finished. Have to keep the room neat. This ‘new’ cutting table has three shallow drawers on each side of the front with a double door cabinet below. I keep thread in 3 of the drawers and will definitely use this idea for separating the spools in each drawer. Currently use small baggies to at least keep them contained. Will also make foam dividers for the other quilt supplies in the other three drawers. I tried the silverware trays but they were too wide for the drawer by a little less than an inch so was left to using different sizes of little boxes. Helps but your creative use of the foam will definitely be a much better way to keep tools organized. And I bet I will be able to put more of your tips to work in the future. One tip I have found useful is this. I have a closet in this room with double doors. Yeah, but lost this nice feature when we moved to the smaller bedroom. I installed one of the shoe organizers inside each of the doors. My husband mounted them on the inside so I wouldn’t have to look at the metal over the door hanging method that they come with. He’s so good!! Each shoe holder has two rows of clear plastic cubbies large enough to fit a pair of shoes. So between the two doors I have lots of easy to see, easy to reach storage area. It is a great place to store jelly rolls, quilts projects that I have precut to bring to Adult Ed Open Sewing each week, a stack of 9 patch blocks that I make as I sew each quilt for future quilts, etc. It is so handy as it is always neat, I can see everything at a glance and best of all, these things are out in the open so not forgotten. And handy when needed. I use freezer paper often so I recently moved something else and put the freezer paper in a slot since it is so long. Just love your videos. Your presentations always make me feel that I would love to have you for my next door neighbor and that includes even if you didn’t quilt. I have a dog too that I love to go on walks with. Quilting from Maine. Heading to pick apples tomorrow.

I too, have made foam core boxes for storage. I use straight pins with flat heads as "nails" for corners and bottoms as well as hot glue. This gives extra security to sides and bottoms. I dip the pins in white glue before insterting them. The pins also help the joints to stay together better while the box is under construction. I covered some boxes with $ store shelf lining and they look nice on my open shelves. I will have to get busy now on my drawers. FYI - there are some good videos on modeling with foam core that give great tips and techniques for constructions. Love your videos, and am looking forward to more!
Thank you for this. I just got a used dresser, been trying everything i can think of to make it smell better and I’m about ready to start using it. Your trays and dividers are a Great idea! So thanks again! I have only used foam board for bolting fabric. I cut it 7.5” x 20” or longer if the fabric is big. Takes up way less space than the store size bolt things. For who ever is reading, if it helps, I use comic book boards for smaller yardage.
Karen, I have been a subscriber for a couple of years and you are amazing! Your practical & creative ideas have helped me in many ways…so a belated THANK You for all your videos!
So I'm not the only person who has everything stuffed into the "spare" bedroom turned sewing room. I'm in a 4 bedroom house and the kids are all grown, so my husband and I were using the bedrooms for our special hobbies and projects now that we are retired. But then my daughter moved back in and I've lost that 4th room where I had all my yarn stash plus a few other crafts properly stored. To make room for her, everything was moved into the other 2 bedrooms. While I've managed to whittle some of the stuff down so that I can get in and out of the sewing room, I haven't been able to sew since she moved back in. My husband isn't too thrilled either because he's nearly wall-to-wall in yarn in his space; he's managed to carve out space in the center of the room for his hobby table.
Thanks for your sewing storage hacks I love them, I have discovered a poundland one that you may wish to add. Is a pill tray, ideal for keeping your machine feet in, the black lettering can be removed with nail varnish remover 😉 Theresa (England)
Hi Karen from Rosemount Minnesota. My name is Theresa Teed. I have been watching your videos a lot. I am a crafty person and love your ideas. I haven’t tried quilting yet but you are showing me the way. You hav given me a lot of ideas to organize and declutter my projects. To give some direction of what I do here we go; I sew, machine embroidery, make no-sew ornaments, crochet just to name a few. But you are helping me so great organizing tips. Thank you so much. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Just the hint I needed. Not long ago my husband was complaining about all the things I collected for my needle works. I actually made use of our guestroom cupboard as well. I drive him crazy he said. Foam board is what I need to make my drawers more useful. Thank you for the brilliant hint.
Thank you. I am new to quilting and you are an angel 😇. I am so excited I found your channel and website. I would love to go to one of your lectures. I may even put the travel bug in the air for a future away trip. Have you written any books? You should consider it. The information you share is so helpful that it would be a great success. Many blessings until next time. 🙏

Love this idea thank you, I just losing my sewing room as a child moves back home. This idea will help me organise in a different area of my house so I will keep sewing even though I no longer have a room.
I'm enjoying your videos on storage. My sewing room is also my office when I work from home. The room is split in half now. I do have a closet that is a huge mess!
I loved this video ,but unfortunately for me I do not have a lot of drawer space, but rather a huge closet, so i hope I can incorporate some of these ideas. BUT my question is...I noticed you have a lot of precut squares and strips from left over fabric. Do you have a suggestion for the size of strips and squares that are considered standard for quilting. I have lots of odd size leftovers and would like to cut them into strips and squares for quick future use.
Foam Board! Who would have thought?! So easy to cut to customizable sizes instead of trying to figure out how to use purchased organizers with sections that have nothing to do with the sizes of the things I'm storing! I think I've been waiting for this video since I first began sewing again 6 years ago! Thank you, Karen! I can't wait to get to The Dollar Store to buy some foam board! (P.S. I've been looking for one of those rotary dart markers for a few years now. I had one in Home Ec in high school. I can think of so many uses for one!)
Foam board?? 🤯 I guess now I’m making custom drawer inserts for all the drawers in my craft room. This’ll be great for sorting all those notions & tools!!
Your before room pictures look just like my sewing room. Thanks for all your videos, keep them coming and some day I will be organized. Now I have to start by finding my glue gun!
Again, Brilliant❗💡 I am going to make dividers everywhere, not just my quilt room. I'm going to do my sock & underwear drawers, some kitchen drawers & make a couple of custom spice drawer containers. (Indian & Chinese spices) This is really so clever & utilizes the space so well. Customizing it to our personal needs is a game changer in the organization game. Thanks❗
Just like you my sewingroom doubles as a guestroom. I painted my dressers white and they have very deep drawers so, lm going to try your inserts. Thanks for the video.
Great tips! Foam board is great! If you want something a bit sturdier than foam board though so it'll last a bit longer you can try corrugated plastic (or "corroplast" as it is often called) but it may just be easier to cut that with an exacto-knife.
A wood burning tool with an exacto knife attachment makes the best hot knife to cut foam board and it's not very expensive. (The tool is sold with several attachments) Plus, then you have a tool for a whole new hobby!!😂🤣😂
Oh my goodness what a great idea and video! I love using foam core board. Just never thought of it this way. Thanks so much! Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I have at least 5 quilts- worth in them. Time for me to get busy! Glad you gave us so many good options for scrap quilts in your last few videos. Thank you, Karen. Lilly
Tfs❣This is a must see for all sorts of crafting! The foam board is sturdier than you may imagine. A few years ago I decided to create foam drawers to hold my wood mounted red stamps. I had 8 open slots meant for holding 12x12 papers. I found I prefered to store my papers vertically for easier access but was determined to use this space for something. That was when I thought if those slots were drawers it would be more practical. I looked for weeks at all those retailers who have boxes out for the taking to load your groceries. I never found the right size so one day at dollar tree the light bulb went off in front of the foam board! Lol! The boxes came together pretty quick however the whole time I was pretty sure they would never hold the weight of the wooden stamps. To my surprise it worked fantastic! I reinforced my corners with duct tape. This served to reinforce as well as decorate. Fast forward another year or two I decided to model podge tissue paper over them because I had changed the colors in my craft room and didnt think the duct tape would take the paint to well. Those drawers are so solid now! I made burlap Rose's that I hot glued to the center to look like a knob but didnt expect to be useable, WRONG! That foam board is solid and holds up. Each box is approximately 13x15 and is full of wood mounted rubber stamps 2 layers. Not only have they survived normal usage but last spring we moved. When packing I stacked them I side a large moving bag with their contents as is fully expecting them to be crushed but it was an easy way to keep the stamps organized during the move. To my absolute surprise the only damage was that 2 of the hot glue rose knobs came off. AMAZING! After watching your video I am inspired to create trays for my threads that just roll around loosely in my ikea drawers... which I LOVE for my sewing cabinet! Perfect size for sewing supplies that you want right at the sewing machine. Easy access and on rollers🤗 Again tfs❣ I hope many people see your tutorial. Well done!
If you need a pattern for the foam board pieces, moving stores like u-haul sell box inserts for packing crystal. They look just like these but made of cardboard. (Love your Canadian accent when you say “a-bout”)

I’m so glad that you mentioned your family dynamic cause I can relate! I have one minor child at home and it’s his SENIOR year in High school. Out of 3 kids. 28 , 26 and a 17 year old ,, I’m done, I need peace not acculaides for being a parent. Over the hill and need RnR.LOL
+Valencia Perez I was sad for about a day...then I’be embraced the change 😊
Love your Dollar Store suggestions for organizing my small sewing room! I need to check for more foam board. Thanks Karen!
Wow this is really neat!!!! I am saving this video for sure!!
Duct tape also works great on foam board. I made two huge window cornices with foam board and duct tape…perfect!
I have been wanting a Murphy/wall bed for my guest/sewing room FOREVER. Had no idea that Costco had them. That tip alone was worth the price of admission for me on this video,LOL. Lots of great ideas here. Can hardly wait to get started
Карен,вы умница!!! Правильные идеи.Думала,что только у меня хаос с тряпочками,оказывается у всех одно и тоже.Спасибо за идеи,прекрасный мастер класс!!!
I SEPARATED MY DRAWS WITH SHOE BOXES AND TAKE AWAY PLASTIC BOXES (ALL FREE FROM SHOE STORES AND TAKEAWAYS). GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE I DID NOT LIKE THE WASTED SPACE. TROUBLE IS NOW I HOARD EVEN MORE LOL BUT AT LEAST I KNOW WHERE IT ALL IS . GREAT VIDEO KEEP EM COMING X
Oh, good idea. I use shoe boxes for toiletries, and all sorts of other belongings, but never thought of them for sewing items, duh! Now, my head is buzzing with ideas. Thanks.
LOVE IDEAS THAT DO NOT COST A LOT. LOVE KARENS IDEAS AND SOMETIMES US SUBSCRIBERS HELP EACH OTHER X
Use fabric or wallpaper and an allpurpose glue or wallpaper glue to make the shoe box better looking if you want to.

You are gifted; this video must have taken a long time to do and I appreciate all your effort.
This post may be 3 yrs old but it saved me. My small room is 1/2 office and 1/2 sewing room, (thank you Covid). No drawers just 4 each two drawer lateral files. This solution is perfect for the drawers that are not being used. Thank you for your organizational skills.
Glad it helped! I still use it to take advantage of deep drawers and hidden storage spots. One of my favourite hacks
Excellent...let me know how it works out
I love how your mind works!!!
Oh my gosh, Karen, I've just noticed that you have 95.3K subscribers. Congratulations, you're a phenom! Hope you do something exciting to celebrate when you reach the big 100K -- Whoohoo!

🤞
This is something we all need to do! Nice, please do more on your his subject. So glad you have your sewing room back.
Who couldn’t use more space, another great hack. Thank you for the video
I love the idea of only having a half-sized upper insert that can slide from side-to-side, with no need to lift and remove 😁👍
It has worked out really well.
I bet! Good for you!!! xo
Thank you. I know that I have much to learn
You’re very welcome
Great idea with foam board for trays. We all have messy areas that could use a good organized system. Thank you!! 😊☕️
I also think that over time your use of space changes...and it will be easy to adapt with this method
so cool! ingenious. on finer cuts a pointed exacto knife makes nice clean cuts into those hard to get tiny spaces like in the notch ends. what i love best is that you can SEE everything - so helpful!
Love this idea thank you, I just losing my sewing room as a child moves back home. This idea will help me organise in a different area of my house so I will keep sewing even though I no longer have a room.
I am working on the Declutter 2023 Challenge. Great video to review for my space needs. Thank you!!
I'm enjoying your videos on storage. My sewing room is also my office when I work from home. The room is split in half now. I do have a closet that is a huge mess!
This series is awesome, but this hack is the most. Thanks for the videos! You are always inspiring, Karen. -Sally from MO
I really am your biggest fan. I think you are talented and great at what you do!
Thank you so much 😀
I loved this video ,but unfortunately for me I do not have a lot of drawer space, but rather a huge closet, so i hope I can incorporate some of these ideas. BUT my question is...I noticed you have a lot of precut squares and strips from left over fabric. Do you have a suggestion for the size of strips and squares that are considered standard for quilting. I have lots of odd size leftovers and would like to cut them into strips and squares for quick future use.
I love the thread drawer, I plan to make that one for sure.
what a wonderful idea.thank you .I am now a new subscriber..Where have you been part of my life LOL.Now I have to go and organize all my material.
Oh Karen you are so clever!
Your before room pictures look just like my sewing room. Thanks for all your videos, keep them coming and some day I will be organized. Now I have to start by finding my glue gun!
Great job, now you can come to my house and work on my room! 🤣🤣🤣💞
Robin Malek after I sleep for a few hours 😊
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts I can give you a few days.... You still have to come all the way to Florida!✈️✈️
Again, Brilliant❗💡
I am going to make dividers everywhere, not just my quilt room. I'm going to do my sock & underwear drawers, some kitchen drawers & make a couple of custom spice drawer containers. (Indian & Chinese spices)
This is really so clever & utilizes the space so well. Customizing it to our personal needs is a game changer in the organization game. Thanks❗
exactly 👍
So smart and practical, thanks for inspiring me to organize my crafting space.
You are a genius! Great video. Who knew all we needed was foam board. Well done.
THIS VIDEO IS A LIFE SAVER!!! Thank you sooooooo very much. I appreciate your wisdom xoxo !!!!!
G / Morning Karen, from Aust , l am having a relaxing rainy morning reviewing all your past videos, you are the best xXxX
I love that in its own way- the colors of your foam core are very quilt-like. Also - you look fabulous!!
C Zeidman yes!! i was admiring the lipstick color and the pink shirt!!! ❤️
😊 thank you
You are wonderful. Learning new things every day. Thank you.
Thank you! So nifty you 😮….so kind of you to share with all us sewists!
Just like you my sewingroom doubles as a guestroom. I painted my dressers white and they have very deep drawers so, lm going to try your inserts. Thanks for the video.
Oh wow, what a great video. I will be rethinking my sewing room now. Thank you Karen
I’ll always stick with you! You know evvvvvvvverything!!!!!
Mariam J 😊
Thanks!
I looked online and could not find anything...and it’s so easy
I just watched the foam board tray vid. You didn't show us the finished product long enough. Other than that, it's a great ours and I really appreciated it. :-)
Holy wow!!! What a great idea!! I am amazed by your creativity. Thanks for sharing such a great video. Love your new sewing space.
Lots more to do
Think I'll try your method on my sock drawer, it's madness in there! Thanks for sharing!
Definitely will work in the underwear drawer too
Brilliant! Great ideas Karen, I really look forward to your videos.
Thank you. Thanks for watching
I don't just like the video..I L♥️♥️E this video.. makes me want to go and reorganize my sewing room, right now.!! U gave me a lot of ideas. Thank you. God bless you with good hands.. (instrument of the mind). ♥️
Thank you Aida❤️
Drawers? You have drawers! Great video I can adapt to shelves.
Lin Willett LOL...I know...I used to have none
I work better when I know where everything is, easy to access. Were in the process of prepping a house to sell. Some things are packed, some things are moved...
My hope is the new house will have room for an art space, or a garrage I can convert. I cant wait to see a video of your finished room. Love your channel!! Thanks for sharing.
Sew smart! I admire your savvy ideas and your “just get it done” spirit!
We are moving a couple of states away and into an 1100 square foot apartment from a house that is 3730 square feet. I will definitely be using some of your ideas. I will no longer have 14 X 16 sewing room and an 18 X 23 quilt room on top of two additional walk-in closets. Keep the ideas coming please.
Nice to find a simple way to organize all those little pieces and parts, especially the dreaded spools of thread and bobbins. Awwwk!
You are the best, I never get tired of watching your videos.
Good tips. I'd probably put a little square of duct tape on the corners...
I bought some clear plastic drawers at the local discount store, for just such scraps and cuts.
Well done!
I love those ideas. Well done
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts amazed with ur marvellous ideas thank you mary kenny
Omg. You may have just changed my life😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
O. M. G. You just filmed your video from my sewing room! I just have to get in there and purge and prioritize! Thank you, thank you!
Excellent ideas. Great tips for.making.it.all.happen. Thank you very much!
Just found your site a few weeks ago and I really enjoy it. You have such a way of instructing and informing that makes my life easier and enjoyable.
Lynn Gallegos thank you...🍺 here’s to a better world
💘 what you did with the thread. I'm onto it!
If you need a pattern for the foam board pieces, moving stores like u-haul sell box inserts for packing crystal. They look just like these but made of cardboard. (Love your Canadian accent when you say “a-bout”)
Thank you for the inexpensive organizational project! Ironically, I organized this morning. Following completion of a quilt, I need to shut that door for about a week and just breathe. Before I start anew, a thorough cleanup MUST be done. Have a great weekend!
Great video. I have become obsessed with foam board.
I know I have just touch the tip of the iceberg
The foam board from the dollar store Is a great way to make an organizer. And you can get a lot out of one piece. I noticed you have some of the same variegated threads that I have. I love them I use them for all kinds of projects. thanks for another wonderful idea.
+Gloria Gates I don’t Think I met a variegated thread I didn’t like
I love these hacks! Perfect for giving you more room, without more room!
You are brilliant! so I'm just using your brain :) I love your tutorials. Thank you so much for your no-fuss, straight forward approach to getting things done. You have helped me so much in re-organising my workroom and making all my sewing equipment & fabric neat and compact.
