I kind of wonder if there is actually a theme to this song. In other words, did Barrett write this in a rare moment of sane lucidity. I'm wondering if the song is about a rocky ride on stormy seas, aboard a ship, named the Octopus. The chaotic cruise causes him to tremendous reminisce while aboard about a dream like trip while in the woods during another time. It seems like the simultaneous telling of two tales, merged into one, with the present setting being aboard a ship at sea.
