From my understanding, Keely Smith and Louis Prima, were the act that truly made the Las Vegas lounge into something absolutely huge and overwhelmingly popular with star attractions coming into the lounge in the wee hours of the morning to relax and enjoy the entertainment after performing on the big stages up and down the strip....I know comedians Shecky Greene and Buddy Hackett in particular in the mid-late '50s, enjoyed spectacular success but an I right that it was Keely and Louis that trailblazed the way?...

Watched them for weeks in Las Vegas when they were preforming there, so great loved them. My friend was a feature act . in Las Vegas and after her act we would head over to see Louis Prima and his act. Such great memories. They would always put seats right up when we arrived loved them Keeley was fantastic ❤️👏👏👍

Thanks for this! I love Keely! One of my favorite voices. I saw her live in NYC around this time. She sounded exactly the same as she did on those 60s albums. That's what happens when you don't party a lot after the shows: you get to keep your voice! :-) She started the show offstage so that all you heard was the voice. Really impressive!
Keely Smith was and is an extraordinary singing talent. She is primarily remembered as the performing partner and wife of Louis Prima, one of the great Vegas lounge acts of the 50s, however, her recordings are of the same quality as Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Ella, etc. The fact than Sinatra recorded with her is a testament to her abilities.

Keely is my favorite singer of all- more than Ella, Judy, Sarah, Doris, June Christy... so many great voices, but only ONE Keely! :) Have you ever heard this? Hollywood Bowl 1962... Frank almost married her... in her unpublished autobiography, Keely says that he introduced her to vibrators! :) And yes... she is my absolute favorite American chanteuse... Judy and Doris and Ellla and Sarah be danged! :)

I think Keely was a class act and Prima made a huge mistake of at least not working out a deal to keep her on. She is so nice and never have I heard of her knocking Louis personally.
And KEELY HAD THE MAGIC AND THE "IT". KEELY OUTSANG ALL THOSE MEN !! I LOVE YOU KEELY!!! ALWAYS AND FOREVER !!!

I saw her in person in the mid-80s where she talked about Louis Prima as being very abusive to her. She also talked about her affair with Sinatra. He called her "injun".
Well I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised sense Louis used to be in a gang. LOL

I think that affair with Sinatra was the one that ended the marriage. She had other affairs (and so did Prima) but this got personal. Apparently Sinatra was letting everybody in Las Vegas know about it and she foolishly thought he was going to marry her.
Love her to pieces.
I can not thank you enough for these interviews. You are doing a great service by having the living legends talk about a time gone by,,,and it is important that these be archived and available for film historians. Again...thank you...it is truly appreciated

miltsar I totally agree that this interview should be archived for history, because Keely was one of the finest singers of popular music in our era.She also seems like a good person which comes thru in her music.
This was filmed in 1998? I am guessing - at the Dessert Inn, in the Starlight Theatre (?)

This is Keely - as Keely - off stage and herself - I love it - feels like I am in that room, now long gone, and in my 30's again - also long gone.
The times, so many - at least nearly a hundred - that I watched her and Sam wirk at the DI - opposite my husband. The staff of the DI - Keely, Sam even Sinatra and Don Rickles - so many post show dinners, cocktails, stories and laughs - I thank God for the time, the people, the laughter and the life. I never took one minute for granted.
Great real interview - love this woman - her voice and her frank (no pun) attitude. Would not want to see her angry - I have. Also saw her soft and most genuine side - she was a Star by Sinatra's standard too!

Sammys accident was on Nov 19, 1954. So his eye patch incident with the audience had to come later in 55
Yep. This interviewer should listen to her. Obviously Sammy's book had the wrong dates. Easy to misremember. But her memory is a steel trap. She is 100% correct. This interviewer needs to learn manners.
Well first off, I owe Mr. Louis Prima my lifelong love of jazz and swing music--it started when I was about 5 years old and he sang "I Wanna Be Like You" in Disney's "The Jungle Book". Luke, my nanny had to sit on me to keep me from dancing in the theater aisles, but yeah, I knew then and there, "This is MY kind of music!" A bit later down the road, I discovered the recordings he and Keely made and of course, they are treasures of Americana now. Both of them (not to forget Sam Butera!) were simply the coolest! I never got to see Louis, but before leaving Atlantic City, I remember going to see Keely Smith at one of the casinos--boy, she had the audience in her palm, it was a great night! Some very insightful thoughts and stories here by somebody who was right in that sphere of action at the time--I think anecdotes about Sinatra are rare things, because he never said much himself (but oh boy, could you IMAGINE what his autobiography would have been like if he told it straight from the hip?!! Then again, I think if he had to stick to facts--well, there were things he probably knew that he couldn't tell and I think he'd have it that way or not at all). Not exactly sure why Sinatra (temporarily) ended his friendship with Davis over Sammy's offer to help find his son (although I think there was more to this--I've read all the Sinatra books and something tells me there was). Great interview--it's kind of weird to see Keely Smith smiling effusively here! Will check out the other installments...thanks! PS: I'm laying 12 to 1 odds Ms. Langer was originally from Brooklyn or thereabouts!

***** Well, Jersey City is close! I often get questioned by people as to why I don't have an accent, coming from New Jersey like I do--but you know, really people in southern New Jersey don't have much of an accent--to me, they sounded more like people from Philadelphia for some reason. Your mom most be quite the pianist with those teachers in her past! Oh that documentary you linked--yes, I've seen that and yeah, I think it says it all!

Carole hasn't touched the keys since I was a little kid- she gave it up because she didn't have time to practice three hours a day, and it totally frustrated her when she knew where her hands had to be, but they wouldn't comply! I played guitar for 20 years and had a band that played small clubs in NYC like SNAFU and RT Firefly, but also had to give it up- one too many weeks of 18 hour days on low budget features and rock videos and commercials...
love your reference about accents- there's the Northern "Joisy" Tony Soprano accent (Five dollars=Fi Dollah), and the southern Jersey Philly/AC accent- would you say that's accurate? HAPPY NEW YEAR!

For christ sake, I wanted to hear about Keely's life...not one question about her yet.
We interviewed her for our triple Emmy nominated A&E Biography of Sinatra and the Rat Pack. We begged her to let us make HER biography, but she refused- as she did every other documentary producer. That's why no biography of Keely exists today.

Paul Driscoll You know, for all his supposed ‘lackadaisical’ reputation, I feel that maybe Dean usually knew ‘which end was up’ and was much sharper (especially when it came to reading people) than he let on. Jerry also said in one interview I saw that several times when he was discussing business with someone, he would look across the room and Dean would quietly and imperceptibly just give him a little signal that the other person was dodgy and shouldn’t be trusted; “He let me know that without saying a word, and he was usually right.” Dean was known among his friends to be a very quiet man, and of course he had worked with some shady characters in his younger days in Steubenville, so I feel that he was probably very astute at sizing people up quite quickly. As he once said; “Good judgement comes from experience. And experience? Well, that comes from poor judgement.”

His first time back since his car accident". That is what one of the 'Sammy's comeback' uploads intro's says. So Keely's date of 1954 is correct? It's been said that the car wreck story was a cover for what really happened regarding Sammy's loss of the eye. Sammy was involved with Kim Novak..Harry Cohn's new star, and he called upon Sinatra to persuade Sammy to break off the relationship...as Sinatra owed him his renewed career for "From Here To Eternity". Sinatra's "associates" gave Sammy a "lesson" that resulted in the loss of the eye. Sammy could not ever tell the truth as he owed too much to Sinatra.
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned already, but they were talking about Sammy Davis and the accident in which he lost his eye. That was early November 1954.

Sammy Davis appeared on the program What's my line as a mystery guest dated 1957 without an eye patch and two functioning eyes. The video had that date listed on it. ??

I don't have an interview with Jeannie- although I did meet her and dined with her at my "auntie" Janet Leigh's house a few times- if you look on our uploads page, there are many interviews with Frank and Dean's best buddies... as well as Jerry, of course... :)
I feel like this interview is a little too much in many ways. It doesn't flow. At times its like an interview between a Ghost Writer and her client trying to establish intricate facts. Most of us just want the emotive stuff, what did she think, feel or like about x,y,z.

I enjoyed the interview immensely. I love hearing first hand about the "old days" from someone who was there. These type of interviews are getting rare now that everyone has died, including Keely herself who died today.
I wanted to hear about Louis..... :-( she said, if u take Louis apart he's an ugly man!!!!! WTH??? NOOO he wasn't!!!! He was very very nice looking!!!! not a nice Keely...

Carole and Keely were going back and forth so much on when Sammy had his accident... I got confused as well..lol. So I checked Sammy's biography and he indeed had the horrible car accident in 1954 and must have come back to the New Frontier in 1955; not '54? Thanks heaps!

I wanted to hear her speak about her relationship with her husband, Louis Prima. Che cazzo? She really spoke about things and damnit I wish somebody else was talking with her. For fuck sake, she wasn't married to Frank. Ask her about her career, her time with guys like Louie, Sam, Anthony and so many incredible performers. All this dame cares about is Frank. I can hardly deal with this shit.
