Bernard’s working man’s club was about 12 miles from where I am as I type this. He didn’t do a huge amount of TV work, even before progressives sucked the life out of comedy, as broadcasting was very London-centric and he always wanted to be back performing in his own club.
I only saw him a few times in there, and towards the end of his years, but twice I saw black people in his audience who were absolutely thrilled when he picked on them and roasted them, so to speak, and once I saw some young south Asian men who looked a bit uncomfortable but stayed for the whole show.
Of course it was mainly a white audience but people would go there deliberately to get torn to shreds just as young women would go to Foo Foo Lammar’s Palace in the city centre wanting to be humiliated.
There are black people on RUclips who have done reactions to him, and not just the tame jokes like this video but the n word / jungle drums / swinging through trees jokes too, and accept it for what it was. There’s a stench of people being offended on someone else’s behalf that hangs around these comments. I can’t think of anything more racist and patronising than deciding what is and isn’t acceptable entertainment for someone based on their skin colour when I’m sure the people doing this prefer to make those decisions for themselves.
Bernard himself had Jewish ancestry from Ukraine.
He went after everyone… women, gays, disabled people, perverts, blacks, Indians, Pakistanis, Japanese, Argentinian, Irish, rich people, poor people, very young, very old, men, women, himself, his wife, and especially other comedians. The only person who was exempt was his mother.
There are huge double standards at play. Some people who will call Bernard a misogynist call Fred Dibnah a national treasure, when he treated his wives appallingly in life and death. Les Dawson is a national treasure who pumped out misogynistic mother in law jokes. You have people in these comments asking you to do sketches by The Two Ronnies, and they did minstrel shows on TV in blackface.
There’s a narcissism here where people think that they’re incrementally more morally superior with every day that goes by. That they have transcended inequality. When they realise that some people don’t mind Bernard Manning, despite him having the temerity to be born before the war, they come crashing back down to earth and the narcissistic rage comes flooding out to tell everyone else what they should and shouldn’t watch.
If you know who Bernard manning is and you see his name in a video title, you either watch it or you don’t. Some of the top 5 most popular videos on some reaction channels are Bernard Manning reactions eg ShadyShae and JPeazy.
As Bernard said in his later years… “I’m considered an alternative comedian now; because I get laughs.”

I once had the privilege of accompanying Bernard Manning on the piano, at a club in Chesterfield, called The Aquarius. In the dressing room we met to go through several songs, and he was wonderfully communicative, a real gentleman. The we went out on stage, opened with his first song and it was magic. He had a wonderful singing voice. Even though he'd become dated in his later years, I'd always had admiration for him, because he was genuinely funny and a really nice person.

You may not like Bernard Manning or Roy Chubby Brown, and that's your right not to, but it's not your right to make others feel bad if they don't see things your way.

I'd better comment on this before it gets taken down. LOL
Bernard Manning was very popular in the 70s and early 80s which is when his style of humour went out of fashion really. There were a lot of comedians at that time with a similar style (rapid fire jokes one after the other) A lot of these stand-up comedians worked in the working men's clubs in the north of England and that was a tough crowd. If you were no good they would let you know. LOL But that's why there was a lot of swearing (and worse) in the act.
But comedy (like everything else) evolves and the next generation used a more "observational" style of humour which hardly contained any actual "jokes" as such.
Don't worry Megan. You haven't ruffled MY feathers. Keep up the good work.

    Two stories about Bernard Manning.
He walked into a motorway services at about 2am and someone shouted out ‘tell us a joke’ he did a free show for them despite having come off stage an hour or two before.
At one show a man in the audience got up midway through a joke, Bernard shouted to him ‘where the fxxx do you think you’re going?’ To which the man replied ‘there’s a comedian on in a minute so I’m going to get a drink…’ Bernard laughed along with everyone else and paid for his drinks all night.

That 2nd one is great. I saw him 4-5 times and when he first came out he used to pick on people in the audience. One of the funniest ones was he spotted a Japanese looking guy and said “look at him, he can’t wait to get home to build a Datsun” the place erupted. Late 80’s early 90’s.

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to disappoint! When I react to something I usually don’t go in knowing much about it. I wasn’t aware many people feel this way about him…

Bernard was not a racist misogynist, those were simply jokes using everyday language of the 70s. He was hugely popular and was an excellent comedian. He was mainstream,, and appeared regularly on TV, often on the BBC, and even appeared on A Question of Sport where he ran rings around fellow comedian Frank Carson. He was merely of his time. Clutching at your pearls and reaching for the smelling salts simply because someone reacts to him 50 years later is ridiculous.

... his 2007 Guardian (GUARDIAN!) obituary said "Yes, he told Black and Irish jokes, but who didn't? ... He was of his time ... He was bloody funny and had the best delivery of any comedian."

Bernard Manning was about as funny as shingles. Some of the older generation in the 1970s found him hilarious but I regarded him as a right-wing homophobic xenophobe. Let's move on.....

@@rocketmunkey1 Probably says more about people like Bernard than it does about this commenter. The thing about the 70s was that while there was great music & movies etc. for many people it was socially acceptable to be racist, sexist & homophobic- even most right wingers wouldn't talk hat way anymore
