  • Hello Funkers! In this sequel to my 1.1 Analysis, I explore the differences in characterizations of the Rebuild cast between 1.1 and 2.2 given that the characters have significantly changed. And later, I try to make sense of the finale and give my take on the implications of Shinji going full "God-mode".

Just wanted to address a mistake made in this video. Gendo's scene with Shinji at Yui's grave is almost identical with their scene in Neon Genesis Evangelion. For some reason in the making of this video I got amnesia and totally screwed that up.

Gendo does praise Shinji in the original tv series. It becomes part of Shinjis plot to seek the praise of his father and also comes up in the movies. Shinji seeks praise and Ray asks him is that enough?

    Two things.
Gendo DID visit Yui’s grave in the original. The only difference is that Shinii doesn’t sulk about it afterwards.
And Gendo DID praise Shinzo for his work in the original. This sparks Shinji to think he pilots the Eva so that Gendo will praise him again.

I did not see Gendo in the first series as bad at first. I thought at first, he was depicted more as a kind of hyperrational guy lacking emotions or empathy. Basically "I do not care if you are afraid, angry, sad or something else. This thing outside can kill us all. You are the one who can stop it. So do your job and shut up".
I think this was later subverted by showing him as someone with an extremely dangerous, irrational and selfish motivation. Basically showing his hyperrationality to be a facade.

When ppl said Eva is depressing and confusing to watch. It like how living life and building relationships feels like.

Thanks so much for making this video, was ultra-confused how the angel dying didn’t turn off the 3rd impact. I’ve seen 3 of the Rebuild movies so far and I wanted to understand the prior ones when walking into the final film. This helped a lot with my understanding of the characters, especially Rei, who always kind of confused me. @@tonyfunk "Gendo praises Shinji, Something he never did in the original series."
Yes Gendo did. It's even at the same moment; after the Sahaquiel fight. This was a non-trivial moment for Shinji, as he says to Misato afterwards "I think I fight to hear praise from my father", and the series makes callbacks to this moment when Shinji re-examines why he fights.
2nd point: It's likely GENDO's version of Instrumentality would have involved no one else. At worst, maybe those caught in the blast after Lilith initiated it, which would be everyone in NERV or maybe just Terminal Dogma.
This is why Fuyutsuki supported his and Yui's vision. A more constrained version that would take a world ending event off the table. Stopping Seele's plan, which he was against.

@@AlaskaFinal I know, I realized this when I was making the third video of the rebuild series. I don't know how I screwed that up tbh, just was focused on a lot details I suppose.
As far as Gendo's version of instrumentality, who knows! I'd like to think he just wanted to use it on himself but in Thrice upon a time, we see him practically sweep the whole world up as collateral damage with Evangelion Imaginary.

Good video, but I think you're off base in your understanding of Shinji showing "altruism" and helping his friends as being really different and "out of character" from his depiction in 1.11 and assuming that he's had therapy. It looks much more to me (along with my lived experience of similar trauma around my parents) that him making food for his friends is more an extension of his belief that he doesn't have value unless he's doing something that people need, so making food is more akin to his piloting eva except that it's much less traumatic for him and something he has more control over, but is him demonstrating that he has value so his friends don't abandon him (because he's convinced people don't really want him around unless he's useful to them).

Hey man, I really liked this series of yours, but the characterization of Gendo of both mediums is pretty similar. When you talk about Gendo going to the cemetery with Shinji as uncharacteristic to the original, I'm just confused as it's almost a 1 to 1 copy of the scene (Ep 15) asides Misato talking to him on the drive home in the Rebuild. As well as Gendo praising him in Ep 12 for defeating the exact same angel. I don't know. I agreed with a majority of your analysis. Just seems like you may not remember the show, or maybe your opinion of Gendo is just different than mine, but those scenes of affection do exist.

I find it interesting to say that the characters are different/changed. While I do think their characteristics are indeed changed (probably due to the fact that Anno himself is changed and looks at this story through a different lens), I personally still see them as the same characters. In fact, I do see them, as well as the entire Rebuild, as their truest form, as a display and characterisation of their truest essence. (I have just finished the rebuild series, and yes I know Asuka being 'Shikinami' now, yet my point stands.) The life affirming strength, has always been inside all the characters. We see Shinji's journey through the Original ending, Rei began questioning her identity and making attempts to become more 'human' through Shinji's influence just as much in the Original series. I believe all these more 'positive' qualities of these characters have always been there, just simply overshadowed by the lens Anno has been in at the certain times. Since films are always condensed story, so are their qualities and characteristics. EGE not doing this, since it is essentially an ending of one of the time cycles.
Just my little input. Thank you for your incredible work, binging all your analysis right now, as saying goodbye to the Eva's after "Thrice upon a time". Stellar work!

  • @nuit_sorciere

amazing analysis! it really helped me understand anno’s new take on their characterisations. some people say that the rebuilds were designed not to make sense, but even if that’s the case, i really enjoyed hearing you uncover meanings from how their events unfold.

    Great video!
I don't know about the more realistic aspect though. A more balanced aproach would be keeping one or 2 of the charecters as their old selves to draw a clearer contrast between someone lost in full on depression/other trauma and someone growing trough that. People rarely change at the drop of a hat, many people never change or even try. I think thats why the ending of the tv series was so profound, drawing conclusions from extremes as its easier to analyse but doesn't lose its profoundness by romantacizing the idea of people changing to such an extreme degree so quickly. Feels naive where the original didn't as the ending pulled away from the bleakness making a balance that works.
Then again it could be a limitation of the relatively short run time of the movie. Nor have I seen the next 2 in the rebuild series yet. This feels more cartoony to me than the series but that's not a bad thing by itself. Interesting stuff.
Edit: the theme of love driving people to grow and learn, but also possibly driving them to do destructive things in a questionable emotional state does seem to fit with Shinji dooming everyone for ultimately selfish reasons at the end. Still the vast changes still seem a bit naive imho.

    • @tonyfunk
      @tonyfunk  Год назад +1

Hi, thanks for your comment! As jarring as it was to see Shinji and particularly Rei change so much, I do think Hideaki Anno meant to make the characters seem more dynamic. Obviously between two movies the changes don't feel realistic, but the idea of these characters attempting to correct their behaviors seems to be rooted in Hideaki Anno's own path to self improvement. What I noticed from his interviews is that he seemed to neglect characters here and there during the production of NGE and I can only imagine that the rebuild movies were his attempts to add more of his personal experience in trying to change them for the better. The best example of this is Rei. Due to Hideaki Anno admitting that he didn't know what to do with her character in the original series. (If you want to know what I mean, my “In defense of Rei Ayanami” video explains more about how her character was neglected). So although the characters changed drastically compared to how people change in real life, Hideaki Anno wanted to give them that realistic depth but was constrained to do it in only 4 films as opposed to 26 episodes. But I do understand where you're coming from; good comment!

Honestly I don’t like the changes to Asuka so far (I’m watching each of these analyses after the associated movie). She was my favorite in the original. Sure, she was easy to hate, but it was also easy to empathize with her and really grasp the core of her character. She actually seems LESS complex now instead of more nuanced. I’ve enjoyed the changes to the other characters, but this Asuka feels like she’s missing something. Taking away her crush on Kaiji really robbed her of some interesting qualities. Asuka wants to be seen as independent and worthy-an adult. She seeks validation from an adult man but must reckon with the fact that no matter how advanced and intelligent she is, she is still a child. Her relationship with Kaiji was an interesting antiparallel to Rei’s relationship with Gendo. Both girls were dependent on the approval of these older men, but Kaiji would not take advantage of Asuka in any way, unlike Gendo, who uses Rei. Asuka just doesn’t feel as important to the story. On the flip side, I love what they’re doing with Rei. I had a hard time connecting with her in the original, but this version of her is much easier to empathize with. Perhaps this is all intentional. Shinji’s relationship with Rei seems much more significant than his relationship with Asuka in rebuild, but it seemed the other way around in the original. So maybe Rebuild is just supposed to be a more Rei focused story since Asuka already had her spotlight

IMO youre not quite reflecting on the Realtion of Gendo and Shinji in the orginal Series. Gendo also Comforts him for his good work on this point.
Also with all the filmes in mind and alle the things happened in the third and the fourth Movie. Tehre is one thing i want to state.
Yes you are true in the fact that the Characters are diffent to the point that they no longer coinside with the Original characters feom the show. But the reason for this in not simpli Anno having evolved in the time. Anno had the plan to do this since the beginnning of the rework. You can feel this in certain moments even in the first movie. The reason is simple. The world of The Original simply is the world of the Rebuild. The Third Impact of the original has "cleansed the ocean" as stated by Gendo. In the Third Impact of the original more or less shinji learned how to love himself. This also changed him in diffent moments of his further life. The events after the "Beach Scene" in End of Evangelion are scetchy and i dont know anything about the way that basically rebuild (pun unintended) the whole world except the ocean. But whatever happened in this moment it caused the world to slip in the ways of Rebuild and started this story.
