How was your first model? I think Ciara has done an outstanding job! :) If you want to support the channel check out - www.patreon.com/broadswordwargaming Thanks! 😀
My first models were a handful of space marines too. I wanted to paint them Ultramarines, but when I got the blue basecoat I noticed I had the wrong kind of blue, it was kinda too dark. So from that point I changed my mind and painted them as crimson fists!
Yes! Crimson fists are great, I'm a big fan of any imperial fist based chapter.. my first models were eldar guardians. A nice REALLY thick coat of yellow with a blue head. Haha. She did a much better job.
I'm still waiting on my 1st order to arrive befor I can start painting myself big pile of nids can't wait 😁(also cool vid very interesting (1st time seeing the channel too))
My first models were back in the day when Ral Partha minis were about 20mm and seriously hard to paint. There was no such thing as hobby paint - just enamels. My first attempts were dire. That said, Clara's attempt is loads better than mine would have been, even with bigger models and better paints.
My partner watched this with me. Never touched a mini. She wants to have a go now. You guys should do a whole series. From painting to eventually playing a little game/letting her pick her own army
It's on it's way. Next step will be learning the basics and some extra steps, then it's onto whatever models Ciara wants to paint :) It's exciting to see how she will get on! 😀
This. Awesome. Same with my hobby of shooting. Last class I was helping with we had quite a lot of women and girls. Almost as many as guys. I was so happy. Young women are less scared of trying hobbies that are considered "male" hobbies.
She did great using what GW supplied in the box, and is very accurate for what a completely new person would experience if they had no one to show them any painting tricks. What a great sport, the Wine took it to a 10!
Haha, yeah, she had a good time. We tried to keep it as genuine as possible, so I didn't help her! 😅 she's come on a long way now too, and is loving it. 😊

Great first effort! You improve with time and experience and that's when you get more hooked. Since meanie-boy didn't help much (lol) here's a little starter tip- if you hold your brush closer to the bristles, you'll have more control (basically less chopstick and more pen holding). Also by keeping your painting hand (heel) locked into the other hand (heel), you'll find it helps to stabilise you with finer detailing areas. We all had to start somewhere and great tips are to be got on here too. You go girl! Don't worry about box-art, just see what you want to do and do it in your own style...
This was cool. I use play this with a friend in the 90s original WH40K space marine pack that came with orcs too. Many years later I'm only just getting back into this but with my 7 year old and he just likes painting tbf. Just bought this pack and some extra paints. You did a good job Ciarra. It really shows you how much you can take for granted as a more experienced painter. A good follow up might be to take one of the painting guides from White Dwarf and see how you feel following that. It seems like there some basic things like clipping, brush care, undercoating and watering paints that should be covered somewhere in a starter set.

For the first model it looks very good. Some friends of mine can't paint better after 10 or more years in the hobby. Good work! The biggest hurdle are the first few models. But you get the feeling for the colors quite fast.
This looks a million times better than my first model I painted some 20 years ago. Great advice for a first model: do not paint anything on the face! Just a basecoat and a wash. No eyes, no lips, no no no ;)
I painted my first sets of models and i think I did a decently well done job at making the Necrons look withered, damaged and dirty as well as making them look like metal
Yes Ciara this is fun........ and yeah you’re meant to water the paint down. Another thing; the painter’s elixir is Tea ☕️...... not usually red wine 🍷
🤣🤣 I know right!? My first model was a mess. I just filmed a follow up video with Ciara, the model is waaaay harder. That'll make us feel better, depending on how she does 😂
That went from "totally clueless" to "tabletop ready" in a timespan so short that it deserves a "well, that escalated quickly" meme. Great job. And I had a big laugh when she said that Citadel pots are cool. I guess at some point we all thought that for a second.... before we found out how dropper bottles worked.
That's great! Ciara has really gotten into it now.. she even finished her first warcry warband. Keep at it, it's nice to sit, paint and chat together. 😀
Really great job on a first mini. I would love more of this. Maybe a few videos with the 2 of you painting side by side (like you mentioned) answer could see the magic of progress and improvement.
It was interesting to see how the destructions on the box assumes some basic knowledge from an absolute beginner, such as shaking the pots and thinning the paints. I know they have videos on the GW web site, but if you bought your first set from a toy shop instead of GW, you are not going to know about them. So I think a little booklet that they do so well to cover these details would go far. In the mean time, talk about outside the box. A moustache for a SM, radical thinking. The last time I saw anything like that was when they used an Errol Flynn type character on some box art. New blood to the hobby, brings innovation. Well done even though the decision was not to go with it.
Excellent work! The lack of instructions is the only thing missing from that box. Well, that and clippers. And wine. It's the reason I usually suggest the Reaper Learn to Paint kit for a totally new person to the hobby. Reapers instructions are really great. Then move up to the Games Workshop stuff who really does have the best models.
Great job! A little edge highlighting/panel lining, and some additional colors for things like the purity seal, a proper hand grip on a painting handle, and separating things like the head and base from the rest of the model when painting could do wonders for you, but considering how bad those instructions were, you did amazing!
Ciara did a great job, so much better than my first attempt at a mini. Somone else said do a noob to expert series ... create an army play some games ...
I remember when they gave you little mini pots with paint. I spilled em all lol. I was speed painting because I dropped it on my dads desk. Thank god it was some plastic table top
🤣 well done on the speed painting.. we've all been there! I'm pretty sure my brothers and I destroyed my mother's dining room.. just covered it up and never spoke of it again. 🤣
Broadsword Wargaming yeah now it’s having a roommate that totally wants to strangle me when I need the dinner table. She’s only playing because of the quarantine.
This was so interesting to watch! A lot of us have been doing this *so long* we take a lot of the barriers to starting completely for granted. It's a great guide as to the kind of questions newer hobbyists ask and what tips are useful? It also must have taken an insane level of willpower not to backseat hobby here...
ive only been using airbrush and lacquer paint on airplanes(and is very bad at it) so im very impressed how uniform the surface is using a tiny brush and acrylic paint turns out
I hope in future videos you introduce her to nice things like... Vallejo Paints (in dropper bottles) A wet palette Paintbrushes that come to a nice fine point!
@@BroadswordWargaming - I kind felt like primer didn't even needed to be said. Kind of like wiping one's backside and then washing your hands after "USING" the bathroom (I hope that is not too blunt or rude).

Really great job on a first mini. I would love more of this. Maybe a few videos with the 2 of you painting side by side (like you mentioned) answer could see the magic of progress and improvement.
Then I think that is what we will do! 😀 She is looking forward to getting some more painting in.
I learned from the reaper kit. I approve
Good job for first model 👍
Looks great! Rare to see a first time painter come so close to the basic box art.
I thought she did a great job! Even followed along with their mistakes too! 😂
Great job! A little edge highlighting/panel lining, and some additional colors for things like the purity seal, a proper hand grip on a painting handle, and separating things like the head and base from the rest of the model when painting could do wonders for you, but considering how bad those instructions were, you did amazing!
Looks fucking good.
Great effort with a citadel paint brush - especially if the beginner ones are still like they used to be! Loads better than my early attempts.
not going to lie im going to start putting some merlot into my paint schemes from now. i like her style
Haha, its the way forward I think. Drink and know things.
I have seen worse “so called” Pro Painted stuff on eBay..
Better than I did when I first started! Well done!
Good job! I still remember my first model looking like it fell in the paint pot :)
the set i got way back when had tiny paint pots
Wine goes nicely with painting Blood Angels.
Water for Imperial Fists.
Absinthe for Thousand Sons.
For Ultras i would say a cheap lager.
I like whisky with my ultras
Great job for a first attempt! I think the wine helped.
🍷 It's the missing ingredient from all of our paint sessions! 😂
ive only been using airbrush and lacquer paint on airplanes(and is very bad at it) so im very impressed how uniform the surface is using a tiny brush and acrylic paint turns out
will be trying to convince my better half to watch this, hope to inspire the little hobbyist in her ^^
Ah, that would be great. Honestly, Ciara is really into it now and she has painted a few more models at home 😀 She'll be back soon for more videos.
I hope in future videos you introduce her to nice things like...
Vallejo Paints (in dropper bottles)
A wet palette
Paintbrushes that come to a nice fine point!
NEVER.. oh alright. Primer could be a nice start. 🤣🤣
@@BroadswordWargaming - I kind felt like primer didn't even needed to be said. Kind of like wiping one's backside and then washing your hands after "USING" the bathroom (I hope that is not too blunt or rude).
@@Winterydee not at all. Why would primer not need explaing to a totally new player/Painted? If just following the guide, it says nothing at all. It actually does not tell you why you're doing anything, which doesn't make it easy to learn.
@@BroadswordWargaming - lol.
No, I mean I figured that you would cover primer. I mean you did talk about it, I think twice, in your narration voice over. Once when Ciara started the base coat and again near the end. So because of that, I figured that I didn't need to add it to the list and hence my joke in the first reply.
But I'm always forgetting that humor doesn't always translate into text all that well.
@@Winterydee oh I see 🙃 comments are a tough way to translate anything. Ha.
Well, stay tuned for a follow up where I give her my useless (and probably incorrect) information and help!
Totally looking forward to the followup.
Good job Ciara!
Awesome for the first timer :)
Citadel shitty pots are keeping women away from the hobby (this is how we finally trick GW into changing them).
Really like that Gold... I need a good shiny Gold
Can tell she's Irish with that red! ....and I don't mean her hair lol
Good job though! for anyone attempting to use that beginners brush its awesome
...and her fondness for wine
@@AmateurBarbarian ..... thats the red he meant lol
Great job way better than my first go! Keep it up
