I am a woman of very mature age, so this was decades ago … at age 11, I was put to work in our hay field driving our 1954 Ford tractor. I had to stand up to reach the clutch. Life on a small family farm.

I was driving a John Deere 520 I think it was a 1957 model. It ran great, but the small square baler could only seem to manage about 6 bales between breakdowns. Hay elevators up to the big door, the super hot time in the hay mow stacking the hay.

In Indiana, I did the hay for two farmers equalling a few thousand achers. Which meant I was constantly mowing, raking, baling. Because I was terrified of hitting a fawn in the tall grass, I would always carry a rifle with me. In case I did hit a fawn, I could put it out of its misery. The idea of hitting a fawn and it suffered made me sick. So, the rifle was to put it out of its misery as quickly as possible. Thank God, I never hit a fawn.

I hate that you guys have to watch these developers pave your old family land, I can relate bc my great great great grandfather was a founder of my area and it’s now becoming a built up suburb, the land was sold long before I was born. There’s something really special about having that connection with the land you live on. If I won the lottery tomorrow I’d buy out the developers and give it yall.

We always did a mix of Timothy, Johnson grass & a bit of Alfalfa. No Fescue. Fescue can cause a pregnant mare to abort & we had a stallion who stood at stud (so visiting mares) & mares that we were breeding. Your hay is beautiful. What do you plant in the pastures that your horses graze on? Also how many acres per horse for your pasture? It looks as if you get good grass. In TN our grass as OK but not nearly as rich as WI for example. I suspect that longer colder winters with a good amount of snow may produce a richer crop than the milder Southern winters.
