Sam Bankman-Fried was one of the richest people in crypto, thanks to his FTX exchange and Alameda Research trading firm before his empire came crashing down in November 2022.
After users began withdrawing their investments from FTX at a rapid pace, Bankman-Fried filed for bankruptcy for FTX, FTX's U.S. operations and Alameda Research.
It's a stunning fall from grace for Bankman-Fried, who had been heralded as a modern J.P. Morgan for swooping in to save troubled crypto firms before his own firm blew up.
The son of two Stanford law professors, he studied physics at MIT and traded ETFs at a quant firm before pivoting to crypto trading in late 2017.
He launched FTX in 2019 and grew it into one of the leading exchanges for buying and selling crypto derivatives. In early 2022, investors valued FTX and its U.S. operations at a combined $40 billion. Most of his wealth, which peaked at an estimated $26.5 billion, was tied up in the ownership of about half of FTX and a share of its FTT tokens.

Him saying they (would, since they didn’t in this case) had to re CODE a new withdrawal process means they designed the funds to be commingled. Code is written so that a child with the most basic understanding can follow each line exactly how it is written and know what it’s going to do, so long as they understand syntax. Since anyone at all is able to withdraw, that means the code is written properly, or properly enough at least. It’s black and white, not gray, you don’t code something to interpret two different groups of funds you code something that HAS two different groups of funds. The way SBF talks makes it seem as if he doesn’t even understand how programming works.

Banks actually do do what he’s saying. After you get over a certain dollar amount in your bank account the bank only has to keep 1/3 of your money in it while they can loan out 2/3rds to other ppl. So they don’t keep your full account balance in the bank. Yeah. Just thought I’d add that.
They never keep the full amount in your account. In fact, they never keep ANY of it. Bank accounts aren't actual things. More like a reverse tab. You give them money, they can then loan it out. It's why you get interest for savings accounts. It gives you an incentive to put it there. It's the issue with the economy crashing. Everyone tries to pull money at once, but the bank can't handle that. It's also why you can't just get 200k from a bank, even if you have it in your account. You have to go through enough red tape to cover the sun, including a fun organization known as the "IRS". They don't HAVE your money. They need to go get money from a federal reserve.
