    I use the very same sprayer in a tiny workshop. I mounted a rail to the ceiling in a booth kind of shape and I bought some extra long shower curtains which just hang on S hooks. Works a treat....the curtains can be washed if you so wish and almost zero overspray to anywhere else in the workshop. 2 mins set up and take down and doesn’t take up any storage space at all. Still looking at some kind of extraction but up to now haven’t had any desperate need for it!
    A light spray of WD40 or a tiny bit of Vaseline on the sprayer body before starting and a quick wipe after stops the overspray sticking and keeps it looking as good as new 👍🏻

      Great idea with the WD40! Wish I’d thought of that, lol😂👍👍

    Thanks for the video, I've got the Graco Ultra, used it once and went back to the roller. You've inspired me to try again now I have the smaller tip. Look forward the the next 'episode"!!

    I went all spray finish a couple of years ago. The overspray eventually made me go back to rolling though, there is too much waste created, eg, plastic coverings and masking tape. And then I forgot to clean the gun out one day, so that was the end of that.

  • @onecarwood
    @onecarwood 6 лет назад +1

    Overspray is part of it. The best thing is to have a fan blowing out but still all that overspray around. I set up a booth in my basement. Spraying gives an awesome finish!

    I got the same sprayer a couple of weeks ago to paint kitchen doors that I have made for home, it makes an horrendous mess, but near the end of the job I made a spray booth out of 2x1 batten and corex, closed on 3 sides and the roof. I fitted an old kitchen extractor fan into the back and hung the doors on a rack that enabled me to spray 4 doors at once. This worked really well. Shame it was too late for my workshop that was already completely covered with overspray!

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Yes, it’s the ‘misting’ overspray that gets to me. I have fans ready to go, just hasn’t got them together when I did this video. 👍

  • @whitedoggarage

    In my experience the three factors for spraying are finish, time and amount of paint. You can't beat the finish of spraying, but sometimes you don't need that level of finish. Time taken is a balance of mask up, spray time and clean up, sometimes the mask up and clean up time is so great and the spray time so short a paint brush or roller is so much quicker provided the finish is not and issue. The amount of paint is always greater with spraying, but finish and time considerations can outweigh this factor. Can't wait to see how you deal with the air quality whilst spraying in your shop. Another great video, thanks Peter.

    Hi Peter. If you go to vehicle spray centre supplies you can get a roll of very thin sheeting that comes on a roll that is static based. This sheet rolls out and unfolds to a huge size and cuts off the roll. It clings to all surfaces without taping its marked which side is out. We use it in vehicle spraying to prevent overspray and protect workshop surfaces. It's then disposable and quite cheap. Prevents lots of clearing up afterwards. Ours is a brand called Top Gun. Hope this helps.

    I have the same gun. After a quick learning curve. The finish is amazing! I primarily use it around the home. And yes, I cover everything!!

  • @andrew5792
    @andrew5792 6 лет назад +1

    Peter, as you sweep across with your arm try and keep your wrist perpendicular to the surface that you are spraying. This helps to keep the spray tip at a constant distance from the surface and will give a more even coat. If you tend to turn your wrist at the start or finish of the pass then you will end up with less coverage at the ends. Also if the total length of the pass is longer than what is natural for your arm to move through, you should be moving your feet. Hopefully helpful tips.
    When we painted our house we did it with an airless sprayer and the finish looks fantastic. All walls and ceilings done in two days. Then another couple of days for doors/windows etc done with roller/brushes. Having said that we painted the house before me moved in so it was completely empty. I would never have attempted this with a furnished house.

    From what I've seen in other videos, like the Idaho Painter, it's the tips that are the key to the problem. A different size one may make a sizeable difference. Graco have some useful information available.

    Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Also the comments are very interesting to read. I learned(?) a lot the last
    half hour but I'm afraid that 99% I'll not remember tomorrow.
    This way of painting is very fast. By the time I put one time my brush in a pot of paint you spray four panels.
    I cannot image this kind of spraying in my workshop. I'm looking forward to the next videos about (your) spraying
    (learning curve).

    Good video Peter. spraying is definitely the way forward. I bought 2 electric sprayers, one cheap, one much more expensive but I found a £15 sprayer for my compressor gave the most control, adjustment and best finish. In the workshop you need a fume extractor. This could be homemade cheaply or an expensive one bought. loads of videos on RUclips for to build a paint spray extractor. This will take care of the fine dust settling on everything and be better for your health.

    Graco recently came out with low pressure tips. I think they are designed to produce less overspray because they require less pressure to work. I could be wrong though. I haven't tried the Graco sprayer before but I am quite interested in getting one to test out on furniture projects and whatnot.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Yep, the FFLP (fine finish low pressure) tips were developed with this Ultra series of handhelds in mind, as they (not unreasonably) don’t reach the mega-pressures of the big mains powered units. FFLP tips were used throughout this series, pretty much the 310 for everything 👍👍

    My trick is to tape a home furnace HVAC filter to a box fan and have it pointed away from me. You'll be surprised at how much that sucks up and sticks on the filter rather than going all over.

    Interesting. I used a Wagner (not cordless) unit for doing my hall, stairs and landing (5 bed detached) - and had never spray painted before. It took me a full day to mask up ‘everything’, which was tricky, about 3 hours to spray. I was very pleased with the result but I would not do it again. I just felt under so much pressure and once spraying worked without pauses. At least with conventional techniques there are natural breakpoints- I felt I was on a wild 3 hour roller coaster ride.😂

    Interesting video Peter. I have an electric high volume low pressure spray gun as well as a gun for my compressor. I've had great results in the past with both, but like you hate the clean up. The time you save when painting is used up cleaning up and of course cleaning the equipment. I plan on using the Hi volume sprayer for all my garden woodwork this summer, fence panels and trellis, decking and some wooden furniture. Doubt I'll be doing any more inside the shop though.

    Hello Peter, just been listening to the measuring up podcasts and really enjoying it! I have a question about the Graco, I am self-building a new 4bed house so a fair bit of painting to do. I wondered if you think the Graco would be up to job? I am thinking of using Tikkurila wall paint. Thanks Edward

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Edward. Short answer is that I don’t really know. I’ve done whole rooms with my Graco without any problems at all, but I’ve never tackled a whole house. I’d say as a one-off it will probably be fine - if you were a professional painter looking to paint whole houses all year round then you’d need to be looking for something altogether more industrial, with a separate paint hopper or one that can hook directly into a tub of paint. With a Graco handheld you’ll be refilling the pot fairly regularly, as it’s only 1 litre.
      Never used Tikkurila wall paint, but I’ve been very happy with their Helmi furniture paints. 👍👍

    • @mm-xk7pg
      @mm-xk7pg 5 лет назад +1

      Im a pro painter. Get a graco 390 or similar, you will be much better served with that.
      I have both, the handheld is great but its really only designed for small jobs that take less than a gal of paint. Refilling often gets tiresome.

  • @Dickie2702
    @Dickie2702 6 лет назад +1

    Peter what kind of paint are you using? If you are gong to continue spraying rather than rolling then I highly recommend Sayerlack Water Based Laquers. Different animal altogether than the eggshell I've seen you use before. Better finish, million times more durable, chemically resistant and no yellowing. I buy mine through Movac, great company with great support. Trust me way better than Morrels.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Now I'm mostly using Tikkurila Helmi, with some Benjamin Moore Advanced as well. In this video I was using my regular water-based primer. Hadn't heard of Sayerlack, I'll take a look, thanks! 👍

  • @Lmolina90
    @Lmolina90 6 лет назад

    Peter, once again the featured item/technique in your video is very well timed for me. I recently picked up a cheaper, perhaps hobby grade corded airless sprayer to try and get a more consistent finish on a piece of furniture I'm making for my wife. I was skeptical as the wood working supply company I purchased it through markets it as being versatile enough for spraying paint, polyurethane, thin wood stains all at a $60 to $70 USD price point. Having used it I came to similar conclusions as you. Once you adjust to cut down on overspray you can get a great surface finish and quick dry time with primers/undercoats. With a little practice I have been able to get much better looking results on topcoats as well. With all that said this is the kind of tool that is probably best left at the shop, with perhaps an investment in ventilation being made.At this time I would never take my sprayer to a client's home as I have encountered the same "paint dust" effect that you did. With decent ventilation in a shop this type of sprayer seems perfect for priming parts of a project to be finished on site or completely painting finished pieces/prefabricated parts that do not need to be or cannot be finished on site.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks Lucas. I'm very impressed if that's an airless sprayer for that kind of money; usually around that price-point they're a solenoid-type sprayer, fine for sheds, fences and decking. Great that you're getting the results from it though. 👍

    • @Lmolina90
      @Lmolina90 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the reply Peter. I realized that I most likely incorrectly stated the type of sprayer I was referring to. I have this HVLP paint sprayer seen in this link below. It seems to be configured a little differently than what I've seen from Solenoid type sprayers so I have assumed that it operates differently.

    A little / lot off topic, but Ill ask anyway. I have made a number of cabinet doors from 18mm MDF. The edge finish cut and where I have routed the edge profile is very rough. Many coats of water based primer and the finish is average. Im assuming this is down to the standard MDF board I have purchased. I note you use MRMDF, is this more suitable for routing. Great channel by the way.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Yes, MR MDF is a much better board for this kind of application - and a much better board generally for not much more money tbh; it has a harder core, so you don't get the kind of 'fluffiness' on the machined edges that you get with regular MDF. Recommended 👍

    I haven't done any spraying for a while, however when I did I fashioned a spray booth out of an old tent. Obviously size of shop determines size of tent, or could try it in a garden. It kept dust out and overspray in. Eh it worked for me.

  • @ZenMinus

    I own and use (occasionally) a Titan High pressure airless spray gun, the type where the inlet pipe sits in a 20 litre tin of paint and uses a 3000psi pressure to push the paint out. I also use three different types of air operated spray guns. The standard spray gun where the pot is attached to the spray gun itself, the spray gun with a 2 litre "remote" pot, this has a 2m paint hose to the spray gun and my FAVOURITE, a small 250 ml touch up spray gun.
    Yes, it takes practice, yes there is overspray but the finish is great (as you mentioned) and of course you use less paint. Less paint because the paint is applied in a thinner coat than with a roller or brush application.
    I have never been a fan of the "electric" spray guns, though I am sure that the Graco gun (you have) exceeds the performance of the "wagner" and similar brands. BZZZZZ, BZZZZZ, bzzzzz, bzz, bzz, bz, pft!
    The tip size and the pressure can have a dramatic affect on the amount of overspray. I'd recommend you check out the "spray" videos on you tube and practice with various settings. I think there is more control over the output when using an air driven spray gun, but I am not familiar with that Graco gun so I don't really know what adjustments you have.
    A spray booth is the way to go, but that is difficult for most people. I am fortunate that I can have an airflow through my garage where I do any spray painting (move the cars FIRST :-) ) then the overspray that is effectively "dust" just blows away. Probably not the best way, but reasonably clean and not too much damage to the atmosphere as I don't spray that often.
    The best use I have for a spray gun is to be able to spray the welded tubular frames I make for benches and stands etc. I also do spray cabinets, but as mentioned before, mostly by using the 250ml touchup gun. If you have a compressor, I'd recommend you try the touchup gun approach. Of course, with air driven spray guns you do need to thin the paint. The type of paint and the "thinness" can also affect the amount of overspray.
    Thanks for the video and best wishes for your future spraying endeavours :-)

      Thanks. Appreciate the advice. This video is from day one in a four-month long story - there’s plenty more to come. In part two of the series I go into my reasons for choosing the Graco handheld over other systems - it was purchased for one specific job, so my reasons won’t be everyone’s of course - and this video series is really a long-term test of the Graco handheld by a relative novice user, as I thought it would be interesting for others to see the mistakes I make along the way, as much as the finish that’s achievable. 😆👍👍

    I think there's no easy way to spray - airless is quick but you have to move fast, normal spray guns have a lot overspray and HVLP you usually have to thin a lot to get the paint to atomise. I'm experimenting with a Titan Focus 500 at the moment to see if it has the HVLP advantages without having to thin the paint. I'm keen to see the rest of this series. Cheers

    You're not doing anything wrong, it's just how those electric airless sprayers work. The spray is much more controllable with a compressed air spray gun. You might want to use a couple of low RPM fans with filter sheets on them to capture the paint mist.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks. And yes, I have the fans, just haven’t hooked them up to anything yet - or at least, I hadn’t 4 months ago... 👍😬

  • @ZenMinus

    BTW, I noticed (in this video) you did not create enough overlap between each pass of the gun. Your finish can appear quite "banded" if you don't blend each pass with an overlap.

    I'm lucky i guess to have a separate room for spraying but yes over spray gets everywhere, If you can reduce the pressure that helps,
    Glad to see you got a dust mask,
    Maybe try different types of paints, Pre-cat is the easiest, that's a 1 part part, there's a 2 part AC but the most hard wearing that gives a top quality finish is a 2 part PU, all dry hard to be able to sand in 20-30mins, a fan speeds that up, I use Symphony Coatings who will colour match any colour/brand you like. ,

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks! I don’t have water/waste in the workshop, so cleanup is always a bit of an issue - that’s why I’ve stuck with water-based, so far. This series has been four months in the making, and this is part 1 from day 1 - there’s lots more to come 👍👍

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner 6 лет назад +1

      Yep water based is easier to clean up prob, the ones I've mentioned are solvent based so you'd have to check the gun for compatibility too, the PU thinners melts some plastics,
      Did you try a gravity feed gun, they're easy to clean & control, Spraygunsdirect do some decent ANI ones that are a cheap £24, a good starting off point, but if you're going to buy a gun I'd recommend getting a Devilbiss FLG5 1.8mm nozzle, I've got half a dozen guns & the Devilbiss is the only one i really use now,
      you've got a compressor, mine is only 50ltr, I've got a few vids of spraying & a couple of cleaning the gun if they're any help.
      Only very occasionally, to cover screw or pin holes, do i spray small amounts in peoples houses because of the mess,

    • @10MinuteWorkshop

      Thanks! My compressor’s tiny - I barely use it tbh - which is why I went with the airless, cordless; seemed like a neat, self-contained solution that would do a bit of everything, with really easy switching between paints/finishes. A decent chunk of this job is doing some painting at a customers house, so I needed something flexible, compact and portable 👍

    I'm sure you figured this out already Peter as this video is from day one. But in this particular video you are spraying with the tip / movement in the wrong direction. The tip guard is angled in line with the arc of the fan so you always move perpendicular to the guard direction. So in this video you have the tip guard horizontal so the spray pattern is at its widest on the horizontal plane. So the movement should be vertical.
    I think one of the main issues with overspray in this situation is that you are spraying the individual pieces which means a lot of edges. The paint has the go somewhere when you spraying the edge and only half of it is hitting the piece. I always build my pieces bare and then spray them once built. Alot less outside edges and alot less overspray.
    The other option is to catch that paint at the edges before it can go somewhere you dont want it too. Get a spray shield. There are plenty of Aluminium ones around, I have one and it does the job well, but I wish I had got the cardboard holders where you can just swap out the cardboard easily. The Aluminium ones get alot of build up which eventually lead to drips or having to scrape it off.
    Card board one looks like this www.amazon.co.uk/750-Kraft-Paint-Shield-Holder/dp/B0065BCGCI]

      Thanks. If you watch the video again you can see that the spray pattern is definitely vertical; I may be new to the Graco, but not totally new to spraying! 👍

    Could you spray with a spray gun and air compressor from Lidl? I have these already but haven't tried yet, just cars. Haven't seen anyone spray with anything other than the electric gun

    • @10MinuteWorkshop

      Never tried it. You need very height throughout (cfm) for spraying with a compressor. I think Keith Brown @ragnbonebrown has one videos on compressor spraying. 👍👍

    Hello Peter, thanks for the video and first impressions. I have a cheapie Lidl Parkside mains sprayer which I use very occasionally but as I have Dewalt batteries I was curious to see what the Graco costs. Your amazon and Festool links didn’t work so I searched Amazon to find the Graco on for an eye watering £1100 ! Google search revealed them available for about £600 (or £500 on eBay), but at this price I am sticking to my Lidl Parkside. I’ve sprayed fence panels which didn’t overspray that much but not MDF panels - be interesting to see the comparison and whether a more expensive sprayer is really worth it?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Thanks. This is an old set of videos now, and I abandoned the Graco after having too many pump issues. Shame, as it had a lot of promise, but ultimately wasn’t reliable enough. I paid about £600 new for the UltraMax, and they’re still around that price now from eg spraydirect or brewers. I don’t spray any more, so I’ve no experience of current machines, I’m sorry. HTH Peter

    • @geoffreycoan
      @geoffreycoan 3 года назад

      Thanks @@10MinuteWorkshop, so the Google price is about right then. That's a lot of money to spend on a tool that you subsequently abandon due to issues with it. I have some large MDF panels to paint (been watching other videos of yours for tips) and was going to roller them but maybe I'll try spraying with the Parkside and see what the results are. Thanks for the quick response

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Yes, but the Graco absolutely did the job that it was bought to do. Longer-term though, it failed spectacularly - most recently when I lent it to a pal, which really left him in a tight spot. If I ever get it back, I’ll pull it apart and see if I can find out what’s going on. 👍

    1. Aren't there health and safety issues, particularly if you use solvents. I thought you're required to have an extraction system. Your mask looks a bit flimsy. 2. As an idea for a prog, might be an idea to match it up with a pressured system. Prices for kit, since the Graco is so expensive, are almost equivalent.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      I haven’t used solvent-based paint for over a decade, and the mask is P3-rated with new filters, however ‘flimsy’ it may look 👍

      This is quite an old series, and the nozzle that came with the machine was faulty - I didn't discover this until after the job was complete because I was new to the system. I pretty much standardised on a 310 tip for everything. Airless sprayers have tips, not nozzles, btw. 👍

    Fantastic video Peter. I've not used a sprayer myself, but the gentleman that painted my home had the job done in just one day. How in the world did you hurt your head now? Great to be able to see what the overspray is really like in a small space, hopefully it reduces :). I've always been tempted by one those Graco sprayers so it would be good to see how long term usage is with one and its reliability as they are not the easier to find in the UK.

    Did you have to add anything to the paint before spraying to thin it down?

    • @BritCard
      @BritCard 6 лет назад

      I can only tell you my experience with my own Graco sprayer but no you don't have to thin. Even trade paints which are much thicker than standard latex. It's one reason I switched from HVLP where I always had to thin.

    Hi Peter,
    it seems, sometimes it's helfpul to read the manual . ;) I got a little electric BOSCH sprayer for about 90 €. Inserted was a little viscosity measurement. My first attempt was like yours, the shop was a mess. After measuring the viscosity, I thinned the paint with nearly 10%, reduced paint insert and presure and now I'm happy with the results and my shop.
    give it a try!
    Regards

      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks Christian. No thinning required with airless sprayers - that’s all part of the appeal! And the manuals for this are about an inch thick - I’d still be reading it if I’d started 4 months ago lol, 👍

      Peter..... have u thought of going HVLP or even LVLP which would greatly reduce overspray... I bought a hvlp compressor-driven gun recently for around €20 if I remember correctly.
      I haven't had the time to test it out yet unfortunately Pete.... but they are supposed to be paint-frugal...
      Also a makeshift booth in a corner with some 6mil poly might work ?? Or even just lay the poly out around the bench area in such a way as to catch the worst of the overspray 😞

      Thanks Peter. This vid is day 1 in a 4-month long project, vids coming later in the series explain my reasons for going with airless, my previous experiences with hvlp (spoiler - overspray’s just as bad in a small space) and compressor- based sprayers. Some of the pieces I’m spraying are 3metres long so a ‘corner booth’ won’t cut it, unfortunately! 👍👍

    Why the Dewalt Battery?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      The Graco Ultra series use the DeWalt XR battery platform; DeWalt gets their batteries and chargers in the hands of potentially new users, Graco gets a solid and proven platform, and we the consumers get to consider bare DeWalt tools in future. Win, win, win 👍

    Peter, Love your videos and I understand that you need expensive tools for your business. However, as an amateur, Festool and Graco paint sprayers are just out of my price bracket. Can you get back to the cheap tool/Festool videos as the Titans and other cheap makes are more than likely the ones I could only ever justify. Not to say though that I don't drool over the Domino cutter, but instead have to make do with a biscuit jointer in the sale from B&Q.

      It’s a decent chunk of money, but actually pretty reasonable for an airless sprayer - and it paid for itself on this one job. If I was buying again I’d go for the Ultra instead of the UltraMax and save £100.
