  • Featured in Stranger Things, Vecna is an entity aligned with the Upside Down and the main antagonist of season four. He began as the human Henry Creel who discovered he had remarkable psychokinetic abilities at a young age.
Motivated by a nihilistic and cynical philosophy, his ultimate goal is to unleash the malevolence and corrupting nature of the Upside Down into the real world.

The upside down before Henry seemed peaceful with the first demogorgon he sees not attacking him and mindflayer never trying to attack us before Henry. Would be a fascinating twist if the mindflayer before Henry was a peaceful ruler and henry came and turned it into hell. Does fit with the theme of Henry corrupting everything he touches.

I was a bit confused about the gates too but my guess is the gates were fairly inert because Vecna was so badly hurt. It took a few days for him to recover enough to set things in motion. If locals blocked off area for the feds while they investigated the gates then boom. It works out.

We see that Vecna gets sent to a barren wasteland, where the Demogorgons, Demodogs and Mind Flayer already existed - It might be more accurate to say The Upside Down is a psychic projection of Vecna, like how Vecna can be physically in the house in the Upside Down, but also attacking Eleven in the Upside Down, we even see Max leave the regular Upside Down and enter Vecna's (mind?) red place.
I'd love to see the rest of the dimension explored

Ngl, as nice as Vecna was as a villain, it felt like a let down to see him be the one who essentially formed the upside down as we know it. While the concept of “man being the monster” is always interesting to explore, it wasn’t needed in the Stranger Things story. Humankind making mistakes is already seen in the US government’s testing of kids, and the Russian government’s attempts to bend the upside down to its’ will. Vecna being the “big bad” takes away some of the existential dread of the Mind Flayer. That Lovecraftian horror element is kind of lost with Vecna, even if Season 4 is a nice continuation of the show.
EDIT: I’ve gotten a lot of notifications of people commenting “The upside down existed long before Vecna. He didn’t create it.” I know that. When I said that Vecna “formed” the upside down “as we know it,” I meant that he shaped what was there into the evil realm we are familiar with in the show. Apologies if my original wording wasn’t specific enough.

I hope the writers had come up with a good explanation for the ending of the series, a huge plot twist of sorts. So far it's not bad, but I had expected more from Stranger Things, I hope they will come up with a big surprise.
Also, leaving Max alive was kind of a mistake in my opinion. I love her character, but knowing that the main characters are basically invincible really takes away from the fear of losing them. I think now that they have let her live, they should do something to make this event have more weight. A good twist would be to leave Max crippled by the events. As we have seen she isn't in a very good condition. Now I think what they should do is to let her wake up, but in an almost unusable body. The dilemma here is that Max is alive, but at what cost? A decision between letting her live a miserable life or letting her pass would be a really emotional scene.

I think Max might be brain dead. She was physically dead until 11 tried to revive her. It worked, her body came back to life but she's been in a coma since. When 11 went into her psychic realm (or whatever it's called. The black where she can psychically see people) Max wasn't there. It was an empty hospital bed. So I think she's brain dead. They might change that next season but I think Vecna succeeded in absorbing Max's consciousness, like the others. Sure its gloomy but it doesnt look anywhere near as malicious as the "modern" upside down with the full on reds. Additionally, the upside down doesnt initially look like hawkins which suggests to me that Henry moulded it to weaken the barrier between the dimensions. One final question I have is was the upside down always there or did Eleven create it when she banished henry? A few people i have asked said that the upsidedown was a manifestatrion of her rage but IMO, so theres so much detail there with things like complex alien life that I believe that the upside down has always existed or existed long enough for evolution.

I was just thinking today that what with the two of them not existing without the other, they have to have their showdown. Perhaps El really does have to sacrifice herself for some reason because of this. Whatever the precise mystery, it appears 110’s birth was tied to 001. Vecna is created by 110, banished to the Upside Down, where he would fully develop his powers. 110 doesn’t exist with 001. Vecna doesn’t exist without 110. None of these Will/Max theories we’re hearing have as much meaning. Even though, I admit, Will would be a close second. Poor kid has been put through the wringer. Perhaps the two will assist. They certainly both have strong cases for those roles (and I really want to see Max in that role). But it will be a showdown between Vecna and El. 001 and 110. Henry and Jane. However you like it. It’s them. That’s my thinking.

With this show there is a lot inspiration from H.P Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos. I mean, clearly because its Sci-Fi horror. It has an alternate dimension, interdimensional beings, dark rituals, it ponders on our existence within the grand scheme of the cosmos and they name the monsters and villains from one’s that are from Dungeons and Dragons which is heavily influenced by Lovecraft. I think the next and final season will explore what's really pulling all the strings and how and why the upside down exists. I don't actually believe the main villian is Vecna/Number 1/Henry Creel since he did not create the Upside Down and didn’t actually create the Mind flayer, he just reshaped it to look like a spider since he loves spiders. Despite his abilities he's far from all powerful. I believe its an even greater, infinitely more powerful and more horrible creature. I theorise the true main atagonist will be something based off of, if not the Outer God from the Cthulhu Mythos, Nyarlathotep. I think of it like this, theres a lot of madness, manipulation, chaos, destruction and death going on in this show and Nyarlathotep is a being who delights in those soughts of things. His greatest strength is his power to manipulate, he could be responsible for the Russians opening the gate to the Upside Down in Hawkins or filling young young Henry Creel's head with such dark and messed up thoughts, he may even be the source of Eleven and Vecna's power and Nyarlathotep is very often among Humans in most of H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Nyarlathotep is a nigh-omnipotent, nigh-omniscient being with immeasurable strength and magical abilities. He could be the God/Creator of the Upside Down. One thing that’s often debated in the Cthulhu Mythos about the Outer Gods is power level, as in who is the strongest/most powerful. I’d say in terms of capability, that title easily goes to Nyarlathotep and could easily destroy us as if we never existed but he won't destroy everyone in Stranger Things because if he did, that would leave him with nothing to toy with. The enjoyment he gets from toying with humans and shaping history with suggestion and coersion fulfills him for the time being. He might be growing tired of his playthings or wants to excite himself with the worlds total destruction which is what I believe is happening in this show now that we're near the conclusion of this series. I've been theorising this for nearly three years now and I thought I might just throw it out there.

Theory: There will be 3 main monster in S5. First Vecna who will be much stronger and since he got burned he will have a different form of his evil body. He will be much stronger plus having revenge thrived in his blood even more and that will increase his strength by alot too. He will have insane durability and use his regular killing mind method but a lot more brutal than it already is. He will also fight with his hands and legs like a Demogorgon or at least use them more and will be incredibly strong like on and faster than he is. He will be up to 2.5 stronger than he already is.
Then there is the Mind Flayer. Which will also be most blood thirsty and revenge seeking and will most likely be at its strongest point.
Last but not least. If you remember correctly Nancy saw in the Vecna vision. "A Monster With A Gaping Mouth Leading An Army Of Creatures" well arguably people would just think "The Spider Monster" The Mind Flayers other version which also has a much lower IQ but lets not get into that for how smart its Shadow version is compared to its weaker and less smart physical version "The Spider Monster" But back to the point. I think this monster will be the main villain or second to main villain. In my opinion I believe it will be the strongest or second strongest there.
Bonus theory: The Demogorgon arguably was stronger and more blood thirsty in season 4 than season 1, I mean just look at how quick and strong it was in season 4 compared to season 1. So also I think that there will be around 50 of the stronger Demogorgans and then the rest would be normal season 1 ones. Plus stronger demo bats, Demodogs, Many new creatures. In season 5. The three main villians will be Monster with a gaping mouth. Stronger Mind Flayer. And A way stronger Vecna. Then secondary The strong Demogorgons. It will be crazy.

Im so disappointed they went with “it was this villain all along” cliche, the mind flayer has had its potential wasted, but its possible the duffers will do something with it in season 5, it kinda ruins the feel of what the mind-flayer was supposed to be, I’m sorry but a lovecraftian nightmare is much cooler, and more interesting than just a guy with powers who now has vines all over him.
The upside down reveal is also incredibly lame imo, I, (like many others) assumed the upside down was once like earth, but now we don’t even know how it became like hawkins. It will be explained in season 5 no doubt, still I find it being a world where everyone is dead more interesting than a barren wasteland. @@johndetheshape3095 Having the Mind Flayer be subservient to a human-being and making Henry the overarching big-bad of the series, would be a grave error. That would mean the entire threat of the Upside Down comes from the delusions of grandeur of a psychic human, and most of us loved the UD for the exact opposite. There was an appeal to the original “dark reflection of our world” concept, where all the living creatures there were inexplicably evil. It felt very lovecraftian and alien. Instead, The Upside Down mythology would lose its cosmic horror, the ST world would feel smaller, and the stakes wouldn’t be as high.
I just think it’d be disappointing to know that the Mind Flayer, Demogorgon and Demodogs would have never been a threat to our world had Henry not gotten banished there by an eight-year-old El!That really takes the sinister, otherworldly appeal out of the Upside Down and it’s fauna.
Are there some cool elements of irony and an interesting theme when it comes to Henry enslaving this dimension? Sure, but the show wasn’t lacking themes of the evil that humans are capable of before this revelation, since we already had Brenner for that. The whole point was that before S4, Brenner was just as bad as the goddamn Mind Flayer, so I disagree that this twist was needed due to lack of thematic messages condemning humanities play in all of this.

The whole show is the kids writing and playing there own version of Dungeons and Dragons. Nothing really happened in the show. That's what the end scene will show.

In season 5 people must see what its really happening. Not just some made up stories about devil and earthquake..also needs more explanation about the upside down world and how Vecna got his psycich power from the first place when he was human. For El it is explained good. Experiments with lsd with her mother

The First Shadow stage play and recently released VR game further explains some extra lore. Both are canon. I recommend watching a playthrough of Stranger Things VR during your spare time.

    spoiler alert:
Eddie Munson return in season 5, reborn as a being of Upside Down. He wields mighty guitar called Hellfire and a magical guitar pick called Chrissy. Imbued with power of Metal, and he kills Vecna with devastating guitar swing to his face.

I don't really like the concept of vecna being the entire reason the upside is what it is. I liked the original idea, like dustin said, Vecna being the Mind Flayer's '''5 star general'' not having total control over it. I miss the upside down being lovecraftian horror, it made for so many interesting theories, Not having a really cliche villain story. Total bummer to end what was so many speculations to what it could be.
