- Starring Keith David, Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott and Brandon Perea, Nope revolves around two siblings struggling to maintain their family’s ranch and legacy.
Following the death of their father under mysterious circumstances, the pair become convinced that there is a UFO above and enact a plan to capture the evidence.

@@filmcomicsexplained well about that native to earth deal: nope due to the existence of zeppelins (the ammo needed to destroy them would shred such a creature and was widely used during WWII) and the fact that the movie takes place on the US west coast wich was attacked by japan with baloon bombs during WWII meaning that they would have been known since at least WWII if the creature was from earth.

Anyone here think it's weird that jupe said the "ufo" comes every Friday at 6:13 pm? Like how long Gordy went on a rampage, 6 minutes and 13 seconds.
OJ survived. In the movie Emerald literally shuts her eyes for a few seconds before opening them again to make sure he isn't an hallucination. Plus, Lucky is the literal luckiest horse to not have been eaten after so many attempts, a lucky horse indeed. OJ lives because of Lucky AND fits with the theme of respecting dangerous animals. Jupe dies because he took advantage and never respected the alien while OJ lives because he entirely respected (not looking at it) and did not take advantage of it.
I want to think that too nothing really points that he died as the monsters did follow ojs sister or whatever when she was riding away on that bike

In the case of him unfurling that to spook it, earlier it had eaten something with that attached, so it was reacting to something it had learned was inedible and banked off. It's not stupid but it's also still an animal and much of its behavior as the movie goes on is learned behavior or reaction to something done to it. Such as being fed horses, then being tricked into eating a fake one, during its next feeding at the faire it eats everyone...except for the horse likely in response to being tricked by the fake one it then spits back out, feeding it the decoy might have also pissed it off since we see it escalate in aggressiveness after that.
More likely fighting with other of its species over territory, mates, food etc just like allot of animals it has a threat pose like gorillas beating their chest or bears standing upright
That also means that all the flying saucers people have been recording accounts of for centuries were actually these things and everyone that got "abducted" and never came back over the years died horribly
The monster design for this movie was so good the way they used the screams of its victims as a way if signifying its presence on the sky made it so terrifying

I remember sitting in the theater with my friends and whispering in horror "It's...eating them..." And then you realized why the creature always seemed to "scream". Absolutely horrifying realizations over and over again

@@rita6355 probably nothing, since it swallow people and objects with sharp edges. You could knife it all day and it would reseal itself as you get closer to being the next human to be devoured, all the while listening to your friends agonizing screams as they're liquified very slowly.

Want to know worse is it was because the people wasn't been digested yet they was stuck in the pipe before the stomach because of that fake horse, they only died when it ejected its stomach above the house to remove the fake horse blockage (when the screams stopped it ejecting it's stomach liquefied the people and non organic stuff rained on the house and finally the fake horse came out)
Usually it moves the organic stuff into his stomach within 30 seconds and spits out the non organic stuff
start of the movie is what should happen, when coins and keys hits his dad (believe it sucked up a bunch of hikers) and at the end of the movie when it Swallows up 1 person he went quite quickly and spat non organic stuff out
Fun fact, they mixed the screams of people imagining being on a roller coaster and then those people imagining being in terror for the movie.
I absolutely loved Jean's design it's a breathe of fresh air in alien designs today. They're either humanoid, aliens disguised as humans or just a blob with various appendages. It was horrifying in a totally different way

@@Hinokami777 The director said he found inspiration on one of the Angels from the anime show Neon Genesis Evangelion. That Angel was enormous and had some kind of colorful "eyes" and appendages.
And i love how in the trailer you see a peek at what we thought was the alien but in the movie it's in fact just a bunch of kids messing around 🤣

Everything talks about the screams, but the kids in the alien masks were the freakiest part to me. It plays on that very deep seated fear of the unknown in the dark
At that scene I was thinking, what kind of farmer goes around at night without a gun? Then he punched the kid and I was like, oh, he would have killed kids.

Shoutout to Angel the Fry’s electronic guy. He first started out as an average sales guy. I thought his part was gonna be short and out of the way, but instead he became one of the main characters and a vital part in helping OJ and Em. Also he wanted to help people. Really glad he made it in the end! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Usually a monster loses some of its scare factor once the whole thing is revealed, but this one is the opposite; it's actually even more uncanny once you realize how it works. And the creature design in general is quite creative and interesting, having a weather balloon textured flying saucer that is actually the alien itself. Although I haven't seen the movie yet, I think I definitely will now.
The film is fantastic! Although I would recommend you watching on IMAX it’s no longer in IMAX (or at least In my area). The film has some brilliant moments of horror, tension and amazing cinematography shots. And the sound… OMG THE SOUND IS BRILLIANT!!
Why the hell would you spoil it for yourself by watching this without having seen the movie? Lmao
@@PlagueRiddenBlightSpawn cause a movie is like 2hrs where you can watch these and get some enjoyment in a condensed form. some people are busy and have to choose what entertainment to indulge in with their little free time and unfortunately that sometimes means accepting spoilers.
It's not as scary as you make it sound. So please don't go into the movie thinking it's a horror movie, otherwise you will be disappointed and might not enjoy the film as much.
Lovecraftian-esque monsters are my favorite, so when I saw it transform I was pleasantly suprised. I didn't expect that. Which is nice to have subverted expectations in movies now. Isn't common lately.
I like how this UFO turning it to be a creature kind of liquifies a common sci-fi trope, the roaring spaceship. In visual media, machinery and spacecraft, whether futuristic or alien in nature, has this tendency to emit deep bellows, meant to both sell the size and power of the craft but also generate intrigue- is that the sound of engines firing? Metal scraping? Is it akin to a foghorn?
In NOPE, the answer is quite simple. It’s pissed, and it wants you to know it.

I think OJ is indeed alive because we never hear Lucky screaming like the other horses when they got eaten. Perhaps OJ could've remained silent to not scare his sister but Lucky would have definitely screamed its lungs out.
There aren't a lot of alien movies that freak me out. For some reason this one did. Just the idea of something that big in the sky watching you is unsettling. Even more so when it can move fast enough to catch you.
The way it slowly digests you is also pretty nasty

I think it's bc it's Fear of the Unknown. What is this creature? WHY is this creature? It's shrouded in that allure of mystery and intrigue. I rarely, if not ever, watch horror movies and this was the first one I actively wanted to see from start to finish

Hearing the screams of the audience that got devoured tortured me, I was like just put them out of their misery already. Then the Occulonimbus just crushed them and then the blood rain was the creepiest s-it I've seen all year so far. Loved the creature design an original and excellent twist. I was trying to figure out how would you kill something like that lol. Definitely my favorite Peele movie.

Anybody else notice that not only does Jupe's suit have a flying saucer on it, but the flower patterns etched on it resemble the creature in it's final form?
I was thinking they looked like eyes, like the reflectors on OJ's hoodie.
They're just flowers, they don't look anything like the unfurled creature (which is more horizontal than five sided).
I disagree with people who say it was OJ’s ghost at the end…All signs point to the fact that he survived, we never literally saw him get sucked up into Jean jacket, all we saw was Jean jacket turn it’s course on Emerald…also another thing I noticed while watching the movie is that when Jean jacket transforms towards the end it only reverted back to its UFO type form after it absorbed something which was the balloon, why didn’t it do that when it supposedly sucked up OJ? And finally the most convincing fact is why didn’t we hear him scream? Throughout the movie we could hear people screaming echoing way up in the clouds as they were being digested if we could hear the screaming from that distance we should’ve heard OJ scream in pain, Which makes me believe he never died and that what we saw at the end was really him.

Here’s my thoughts on OJ being alive. He hints in the movie that if it’s an animal like he says it can have its spirit broken. He uses that after he sees the alien spit out the horse at him in anger. Therefore giving him signs that they have something (the flags) that the alien doesn’t like to eat which is the only way to defend itself when it felt threatened. When he’s being chased he releases flags showing if the alien eats him it’ll hurt him like when he first ate something with flags (breaking his spirit). After the alien can’t eat/attack him the only way it knows how, it uses a very common animal trope like mentioned in the video flashy color patterns, puffing itself up,being loud, and all that. BUTTT when OJ still doesn’t look away (asserting dominance over alien) he flies away leaving him alone. If you pay attention when the jupe balloon flies up the face is staring at the alien doing the same intimidating trick he tried on OJ, but when gets lower and the face isn’t looking at the alien anymore then it eats it. That was the aliens way of testing its dominance on the balloon it thought was another threat looking it in the eyes.

Yeah I dont think OJ is dead. Too many people saying he is, but they didnt show him get swooped up and eaten, he literally showed up at the end sitting on top of the horse like a hero. That was imagery and basically telling you he is alive. And your explanation confirmed my realization that the alien decided not to try and eat him anymore because it may hurt him since the first time they duped the alien in eating a fuck horse, it was hurt!

The fact that the UFO is actually the “alien” itself is such a brilliant idea for a twist. I’m genuinely surprised nobody else has thought to do this. Nonetheless, you have sold me on going to watch this film.
No this was an idea way before. Ufologist brought these theories thinking that the UFO itself an organic conscious being, intelligent too.

@@MSaleh-vy8rr I think he meant more in fiction as an actual living, breathing, organic (or semi-organic) creature. And even then more so in terms of a typical ufo movie narrative instead of straight sci-fi.
@@willmiester4051 As someone else said, Reapers from Mass Effect. Also The Traveler from Destiny (though it may be a god-like being's ship, lore is murky there.) Hive Fleets from Warhammer 40k also might count. I forget if the Tyranid ships have a connection to the hive mind or not. Eureka Seven also did something kind of similar, except it was the scub coral creating a human-like avatar to send.
Did anyone else notice how when Jupe said “ what if I told u in about a hour you’ll leave here different” with an hour left of the movie to go. He was really talking to us in the audience cause I left the theater thinking different af lol
The most terrifying scene was when the alien was above the house spewing blood over the house and you can hear all the people inside the alien screaming for their lives.
OJ is definitely alive here, he's the one character that knows the most on to deal with it. Him surviving is quite simple, he likely turned away and took off, as soon as he seen Em drive away.

Also, the creature can't eat him while in it's sail-like form. We can see in the end that it reverted to its flying saucer shape when it ate the Jupe balloon.

How shitty would it be if the strong silent cowboy type character died off screen
She called out to it to redirect its attention again, once she was able to start the motorcycle. They were basically playing bait each time it got too close to one. The entire plan was for OJ to lure it far enough away for her to be able to start the bike, then for her to draw its attention and lure it away entirely. Peele used the back and forth to make this pretty clear imo, along with OJ's distress when she called out to it. He is 100% alive and showed up to ferry her out of the park before police arrived - since they were clearly already on a suspect list for the disappearances, if what the TMZ guy said was anything to go off of (and they've got sources in multiple police forces).
Its a bit scary knowing this creature can easily break the sound barrier. In the 3rd act, after OJ unleashes the parachute and tries to attack him but he hides in that wooden building, it can be seen. Its a quick glimpse but you do see the sonic boom cloud as it takes off into the sky. So even if the military were to get involved and scramble some fighter jets to chase this creature, it can easily evade them. I do like the theory as well that this thing has been around so long that its what earlier humans considered to be an angel because of the form it takes when its only hovering and its "wings" spread apart.

on top of that, modern jet fighters and missiles wouldn't be able to harm it due it's electromagnetical interferencer. Missiles can't lock on it because it doesn't emit any heat signal, and would probably shut off once nearby.
Fighter jets are full of electronics, pilot would loose control if it gets too close.
The best way to defeat it would be using a heavy machinegun or autocannon and defend from ground level.
or....the most unconventional trick: take a pig/horse and strap it with TNT. Once the alien comes for it, light the fuze.
Carry grenades in case you end up zucced too.
@@zahylon5993 thats a great point actually. Our technology wouldn't stand a chance against this thing. All our systems or instruments run on some form of electricity. Best bet would be exactly what the female lead character does and feed it something it cant digest or like you said, some type of explosive attached with an old school timer that you manually set.

@@zahylon5993 Not really. Radar would absolutely detect it. It seems there's a certain distance where it activates EMP. Radar systems are incredibly advanced nowadays, this thing would be picked up probably hundred miles away. And I'm sure the military would design missiles which could electronically lock onto it whilst far away and then switch to analog computers when in range.
After all the first radar systems were analog.
Laser guided munitions will work too from a distance.
And as you said, if that doesn't work then you have the good 'ol gun to rely on.
My jaw dropped when the alien ate all those people. When the scene happened and people started getting sucked up into the creature I thought to myself "ooo now we get to see the aliens" but as the scene progressed I was like "WAIT THATS A GULLET WAIT WHAT"

Same and when we saw the decoy(or horse skull) in there, I was like: "So the aliens look like horses??" but when we got to the twist where the "ship" is actually a living creature, I was like: "Hold on, WHAT!?!". Man I want to time travel and wipe my memories to watch this movie for the first time again.
As someone into the UFO-Alien niche, I find the choice of a Mantis as the interrupting insect quite interesting. Praying Mantis-type aliens have been reported amongst UFO abductees in a sizeable chunk of cases. I feel like Peele was trying to subvert the audience towards expecting the ‘creature’ to be an Insectoid-type being, as opposed to the UFO being the Alien.
This is the most accurate Lovecraft alien. Super powerful but can actually get killed really easily.

What does “Lovecraft” mean? Is that a genre or something?
@@TheRedRaven_ H.P. Lovecraft was an author who wrote about horrors from beyond our world. Horrors that have no evil schemes, horrors that are just natural beasts doing what they do. Kind of like a wild animals. Cosmic horror is what it is referred to because it's beings that are uncomprehendable to the human mind. And if our mind tries to understand it, it would just lead to more suffering and/or death. Cthulu is the most popular creature of Lovecraft mythos. I would look at movies like The Void or Color Out Of Space, they are good examples of eldritch horror.
The Gordy scene when it actually shows him beating the people and then getting popped by the swat dudes had me fucking questioning life and then it transitioning to Yeuns character just staring off into space in his office for what felt like eternity, completely silent. My mouth was actually fully agape in the cinema. Some of the best shots, pacing, and themes I’ve ever seen in film. This movie is legit insane and one of my favorites of all time now.

@@chrsso Yuen’s character believed he had some form of bond with Gordy, which is why the animal didn’t attempt to harm him before it was shot dead.
Yeun’s character then falsely believes that, like Gordy, he has the same “bond” with the alien - which he attempts to “feed” a horse in front of a paying audience with dire consequences.

Been awhile since a movie scared the shit out of me but the scene where Jupe and the audience got swallowed up got me bad and it was so claustrophobic. I loved it.
That scene was sooo unsettling! The fact that they were all being digested alive and the people screaming in agony. In order to trick my brain into thinking it’s no longer scary, I just told myself they were all actors stuck in a tight inflatable bouncy castle or something.

I'm confident OJ survived. The shot of Emerald shutting her eyes was intentional, and OJ and Lucky's whole deal as characters was that they instinctually knew how to survive and gauge dangerous creatures. I believe an underlying theme for Em was the importance of family. The whole film, she was trying to keep separate from OJ and their family business. But in the end, OJ and Lucky under the Out Yonder sign was a representation that dropping their resentment for each other and embracing family would lead to success (and survival)
It's so beautiful and yet so terrifying to look at. I think its final form looks completely aquatic, yet it's in the air. It looks "wrong," and gives off an uncanny vibe.
I read a theory saying it makes itself look more appealing to garner people to look at it.

My friend and I theorised this alien came from our solar system and lived somewhere in the gas giants like Uranus and Neptune, because of it's squid/ jellyfish like form and it's reliance on levitation and mist to hunt. Seeing as it's a carnivore it makes you think what else lives out there, waiting to enter our planet.

@@anasdomain9994 the ufo shape is kinda fragil, it was killed by a balloon. Something that weak is not apt for space travel
I feel like the "UFO" creature evolved on a gas giant, for how it got to earth in not sure. But it can explain why it's habitat is the atmosphere itself and why it creates its own clouds to live inside. Like how some animals in the ocean create air bubbles around themselves for protection.
Doesn't make sense. What was JJ eating in while living in the gas giant? It's a well-known fact that there are no living organisms on gas giants such as Jupiter and Saturn.

The creature reminds me of the cryptid called atmospheric jellyfish. The story is Earth's atmosphere is full of micro organisms that evolved over time into jellyfish-like creatures that are mistaken for clouds.
It's also funny how Jupe calls the UFO "the Viewers", kind of an analogy about how we as a society just view all the horrors taking place around us and just pull out our phones to film them and maybe get some fame and notoriety off them. Exactly the crowd's first reaction when they saw the creature. It's brilliant.
There's also the idea that people in show business are vulnerable to their audience: They put themselves in harms way, hoping the audience will notice, but that same audience can be fickle and damning and hurt them in the long run, with bad reviews and bad publicity. The audience, in a way, chews you up and spits you out, but as a showman, you're forced to subject yourself to that if you want to achieve success
For me. What happened to them reminds me of the disaster sea world did to that one orca that killed the trainer. See blackfish
Jordan peele has said he’s not done with the NOPE related world (like with Nobody) and I think the real “the Viewers” (quite specific choice of words to me) are part of that. But that might just be wishful thinking.😏

Peele definitely made the ending ambiguous for the audience’s interpretation but I think OJ didn’t die. There are a number of reasons but I think it ties into the story Wincott told at the dinner table. The story “Purple People Eeater” describes a peculiar looking creature that came to earth and hid in a tree. One day someone saw it and pleaded to not be eaten and the monster replied, “I won’t eat you for you are too tough.” Essentially, because OJ had a great understanding on animals from being a horse wrangler, he survived every encounter with Jean Jacket. Obviously JJ remembers him and at the end, when it’s in it’s true form, it gives up on OJ and chases Em. I also think OJ living ties into Em’s growth because she initially chased fame and recognition but, after defeating JJ, she realized that it simply wasn’t worth it hence why she smiled at the sight of OJ and not at the sight of the photograph providing concrete, indisputable evidence of aliens; something they had all chased the entire film.
Edit: additionally OJ is a very reserved man who likes the peaceful life on the ranch. I think him staying back was a way to congratulate Em on taking responsibility for once and letting her get the fame, something she desires more. Emerald wanted to make a name for herself and OJ wanted to continue what his father had started.
Yep, I 100% agree. I also like the idea that the only horse to survive the whole thing is the one called 'Lucky'. Which also answers the actors question earlier in the film of "Is it lucky?".

He is sitting on the horse like some kind of fallen hero (in the soundtrack the song played when Em and OJ are on opposite sides of the alien is titled “Fallen Hero,” the implications of that are questionable), dramatic music, he appears like a ghastly figure as a thick cloud of dust dissipates, and because he sits underneath a sign that says out yonder (possibly referring to him being in heaven).

When Jup revealed that he knew about the alien my jaw literally dropped. I just knew some shit was going to go wrong at that moment.

I looked at Holst going rogue at the last moment, NOT only as him trying to get the impossible shot, but also willing to die for it AND with it. Emphasis on *with it*, because the wealth and accolades that he would have unequivocally received didn't matter to him.
It also felt like he wanted to protect this possibly extinct creature from being viewed.
So from what he said right before, that sounded cryptic to Angel (but I think was for us to know as the audience that his footage would not bring the Oprah interview fame & financial gains OJ, Em & Angel desired, because he (Holst) didn't even think the public, society--- the world were worthy of any film footage of that amazing creature,"🎶one eyed... Purple people eater🎶") it was clear it was a sucicide mission.
It's like he wanted to capture it for his own enjoyment & satisfaction as the last and probably most awesome thing he would ever capture on camera. He chose for himself how he wanted to end his career and ultimately his life. He went out with a close up of his own mortality and fatality embodied in this Sci-NON-Fi, supernatural creature, knowing it would just consume him and eliminate the inorganic waste of his camera

I've seen some people say OJ didn't actually survive and that it was his ghost that Em sees at the end, but I don't think that's true. I think he did survive because in order to consume prey, JJ has to return to the saucer form (as showed when it tries to eat the kid sheriff balloon). OJ was still alive when Em started driving away on the motorcycle, luring JJ behind her. JJ stayed in it's defensive form until trying to eat the balloon. OJ should still be alive and well.
I just love the twist of Jean Jacket being a living being rather than the usual of it being a mere craft. However, one more thing that I noticed is how the name they give the UFO is given more meaning towards the end. During the whole movie, Em avoids responsibilities, whether it be helping OJ with the ranch, putting in the work for her family’s business, or even when they were trying to capture proof of the UFO. All in part due to I suppose the fact that she wasn’t given the opportunity to train the horse her father had promised, whom they named Jean Jacket. But towards the conclusion, Em finally has the chance and takes on the task of dealing with this new J.J, saving both the lives of others and perhaps returning her family’s name in the limelight.

I think that’s right. OJ was well onto it being a living being pretty much from the moment he saw the cloud not move. So he was poking fun at her and saying “we’ll break it together.” And in the end, she not only “breaks her horse” by getting the impossible shot and re-creating a modern version of the original Animal Locomotive (saving the family), but also puts it down with Jupe balloon (stopping jupe from gettin the farm, literally avenging their dad, and jupe getting eaten twice lol)

A ship never made roars or growls before and an alien ship wouldn't really dive down onto someone to abduct them so those were the 2 clues that gave it away and possibly as a bonus, the fact it keeps returning to that area since some alien sightnings might happen only once. Wonder if there's more of those things but are undected and maybe are different shapes of UFOs such as triangle, boomerang, etc?
I can appreciate the message in all of Jordan’s Peeles movies but this one really ticked my boxes in terms of aerial megafauna, such a cool concept and works on so many levels. All squishy so no fossil record

Which made me think in the movie that Jean Jacket wasn't an Apex predator that there were likely other threats out there or even other unknown predators

Yes, plus Jean Jacket doesn't really seem to have any natural protection except puffing itself up. It is also incredibly fast so it's main protection is probably a swift escape and if that doesn't work, puffing up to make itself look bigger and a bright display to ward off predators. All in all, it seems very similar to an octopus!
That makes sense. If we were smaller than cats, we’d be food for them easy. But being bigger than them, they feel very threatened by us in the wild and so flee or hide. But to mice and anything smaller than it, it stalks the prey and keeps a close eye on it before striking. But if this prey I imagine were ti perform any action the cat deemed hostile or aggressive, I’m sure we’d get a few hisses and maybe scratches out of the cat. That in a way helps to expand on what you said. Jean is fast, hides and stalks it’s prey. But when the prey dies something it doesn’t like-such as staring at it- it lashes out. And if youre a repeat offender like OJ, you will certainly get a few hisses out of Jean (the equivalent of it transforming). Just streamlining my thought process here, don’t mind me. Thought that was a cool idea and hadn’t heard it yet

There's something bigger out there and, to me at least, it was big but not really big. To me, it looked like a "child" of whatever species it was.
I love the concept of a “bad miracle” or a simple but impossible thing that leads to terrible repercussions, either immediately or in the distance future.
In a way, Gordy going on a rampage by the balloon pop, led to that entire Arena being swallowed by Jean Jacket.

I’m obsessed with JJ’s design, not only the fact that it’s a living creature instead of a ship, but the likeness to the biblical angels. Also made me wonder if it replicates the voices of its victims in order to draw the attention of its next victims which adds to the horror element. Great movie, plot, acting and design.
It was refreshing to see a novel approach to alien design, and it's nice that it's never revealed to be either a terrestrial cryptid or an extraterrestrial from beyond. You think it's some sort of flying stingray at first, but it's more like an aerial version of a gelatinous deep sea invertebrate, and you get the sense that it's probably very lightweight despite its size in order to stay in the air, much like a kite.
The ability to alter into an aerodynamic shape for speed and stealth could have been an evolutionary adaptation, or a completely novel behavior to cope with Earth's atmosphere. The unconventional "cloud like" biology was evocative of the cosmic horror creature from Annihilation, the locale felt like a tribute to Tremors, and the effort by the characters to just get anywhere near it and survive was like the tension of Jaws, and there was certainly an overall Spielbergian tone to the film.
The ending was a bit nonsensical though because a helium balloon being popped wouldn't provide anywhere near enough explosive force to cause violent damage. It would have had to be filled with hydrogen to (maybe) cause such an explosion, but there's no reason such a balloon would be filled with dangerous gas.
The sound you hear when a balloon pops is a tiny sonic boom as air around the balloon rushes to fill the space formerly occupied by the balloon. That's an implosion, not an explosion, and it's not enough force to blow something up, certainly not an animal that is able to consume horses and people. But that thing exploded like the Death Star taking a torpedo right up the exhaust. This was a pretty thoughtful movie and I would have liked to see them also come up with a clever method to deal with the creature, rather than seeing it go poof like a fart in the wind as though it was made of tissue paper.
My take was that J.J. continously circulates air through itself to stay afloat and the balloon caused a blockage and pressure buildup.

I assume it’s not as durable when it’s in the jellyfish like form. Kathy it’s first form was able to endure that. Second form it appeared more fragile and slower. It’s limbs looked like cloth material almost tissue like. After eating the statue horse , being hurt with barb wire, I think it was continuously taking damage and getting weaker which is why it changed forms as a defense mechanism when it really should’ve just fleed away from the ranch
But I agree with you I would’ve rather seen a military helicopter or jet shoot a missile to destroy the creature. Or maybe OJ sacrificing himself taking an explosive in the creature after he lets himself get eaten ? Then killing them both. But I also wanted him to survive
Also have to remember that balloon may not pack a big punch but it was devoured by the creature and it most likely cause it to terribly choke or cause a buildup of airflow that couldn’t pass through so it accumulated pressure. When we viewed the inside of the creature their seemed to be a lot of wind inside its body. We don’t fully understand the anatomy of the creature and we’re basing it off animals we do know.
I can say without a doubt that the overlooming and sense of dread in the first ¾s of the movie made it a solid masterpiece, not to many movies can draw attention and tension as this one and the twist that it was a live being made it that much better , new to the table and eye catching
It finally came out in the country I'm in, and I just got back from going to see it. Peele does a great job of both building and maintaining tension. And, although I don't mind gore at all, I admired the way he shared brutality with some subtlety. Like, when the chimp was beating/eating the people -- the people were obscured to not sensationalize it but to maintain the horror and generate empathy, and when the creature vomits out the remains of the people onto the house, painting it in blood, there wasn't as much blood as you'd expect, and there were no body parts strewn about and focused on -- maintaining the horror and tragedy.
Yeah this movie lacked towards the end. The final form could’ve been much more chilling imo and the soundtrack choice and scenes lost me.

The alien was foreshadowed as an octopus. When Em calls Antler Holst, he was watching videos of animal predators. Among them is an octopus. Just like an Octopus, the alien camouflages among the clouds as an octopus camoflages into the sand, coral, etc. It can change it's shape just like an octopus. The way it moves smoothly in the air like an octopus swims underwater. Finally, its mouth loks like an octopus's beak.

Thanks so much for this excellent breakdown. ‘Nope’ has become my favourite contemporary sci-fi alongside ‘Arrival’. Rarely do you see such wild concepts combined with such intelligence, and such engaging storytelling at the same time. And a shout out for the music, right? The Western-themed score when OJ on horseback is being chased by JJ recalls some classics! Amazing filmmaking that never underestimates it’s audience’s intelligence and keeps you guessing all the way.
I loved the feel of the ufo being an animal. Idk but when I saw this in theaters I was really taken back by how they managed to turn a faceless ufo into an animal
I don't believe OJ died, at the end of the film... he's never shown being consumed; and he was more luring Jean Jacket's attention before it shifted back to Em. I think the Out Yonder was just the potential of what was in store for them. I feel like the film would have definitely shown OJ being eaten had they chosen to go that route. Maybe the original screenplay had him being eaten and they changed it, but I don't think the current cut has him die.
Correct, the movie tells us that OJ survived and use the sister squinting and closing her eyes to make sure he was really there as a device to confirm this.
Also, we see that Jean Jacket had to fold back up to eat the Balloon, and seeing as Jean Jacket was still in his big form after leaving where OJ was..

The Alien is the image of an eye. 9:25 hence the reason why the biker was killed. He never had direct eye contact with the alien, but his helmet was mirrored. So when the alien hovered over him it was a reflection of a eye looking back.
I think this is the best alien I’ve ever seen put to film. The amount of thought put into it with all the references tying it together is so nice to see. Really, a spectacle.

I just seen a video about that incident of the chimpanzee chewing that woman's face off. I can tell Jordan Peele that inspiration from that incident and put it in this movie. And we can see why child actor was very traumatized.

I doubt OJ died. Last we see him, he's confronting the alien, staring right at its eye which established dominance. The alien was trying to be threatening but OJ stood his ground. In that moment, the alien resembles a camera lens and gives nod to the opening shot at the beginning.
I don’t think he ever looked it in the eye and that’s why the alien gave up because he’s the only one to figure out how to bypass it
As a side note, Peele also mentioned that JJ was also inspired by the giant eye alien “Sahaquiel” from Evangelion, for its lack of bio-mechanical design nature.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought the scene of all those people being eaten was traumatizing. Like violence doesn’t usually bother me but in some situations it just makes me it seem so much worse. Like I felt really off for like the next hour after seeing that scene.
I have read some interesting "aerial predator" ufo stories. One that blew my mind was a man who discovered a strange, mollusk like creature (think of a more symmetrical clam, only like the size of a car) on a Mesa; it was "breathing" by it's lower and upper halves spreading apart and then contracting back together. As he and his companion studied it, a long tongue/tendril came from a MUCH larger airborne version of the creature that was floating almost silently above them, and pulled the smaller one to it.
When I heard what Nope was about, it reminded me of this story.
Episode 12 of Cryptonaut Podcast talked about this incident in great detail and I couldnt stop thinking about it for the entire duration of the movie!

Tbh he did get a few things incorrect in this video, and left out a few things like why the kids played a trick on the siblings, how lucky wasn't consumed, and I also think OJ lived too because you don't hear the horse screaming like you usually would

Em closes her eyes for several seconds as if checking to make sure she's really seeing OJ, then she looks and you see him. Nothing else in the film emplies she's an unreliable narrator, so I think based off this, the fact you don't hear him or Lucky screaming, the flags keeping Jean Jacket repelled and him starring the creature down as a dominance display, etc., should be enough to conclude he lived. The point of that bit with Em looking at him in the end is that she's now focused on family and realizes she almost lost him trying to capture the spectacle. The media and fame she wants are right there, but family comes first.

Interesting how in all its forms you can interpret its appearance as a disc shaped alien space craft, a large weird weather balloon, or an angelic deity.
In my opinion this was basically a Lovecraft type creature that had the intelligence of something around the level of a dolphin or a chimp at minimum. Whether it came from space or evolved on earth (or both) doesn't matter, but it's something that humanity has been seeing out of the corner of its eye for millennia. Humanity has given it many names throughout history but it could never quite put its finger on it due to its elusive nature.
An Interesting thought is that if this creature naturally evolved "anti gravity" capabilities that there is a good reason for the disc shape when it's in its most maneuverable form. The same way that humans have to design planes with wings and tails in order to "fly like birds", so too would we (or an intelligent alien species) have to design craft in the shape of flying discs with electromagnetic interference properties to replicate the anti gravity/flight characteristics of this creature or creatures like it.

There's a few times OJ sees the ghost of his father around the ranch and to me it felt like the Out Yonder sign above OJ and the fact that he is slightly obscured by dust was symbolic of him having passed to the other side with his father. This monster reminds me of an SCP that for the life of me I can't recall the number of but it's like a giant Jellyfish that hides in the clouds - has a giant eye and if you make eye contact with it that's how it decides its next prey.
Edit: Its SCP 312 the Atmospheric Jellyfish.
Pretty sure OJ didnt die at the end; dont think that was an apparition or his ghost since the movie never established those types of hallutionations or themes in the movie. Adding that in at the very end would have been out of place, because it would have came out of nowhere with no setup or grounds for understanding. Looks more like an subversion of expectations or bait and switch, since the scene only implied he was going to die but gave no confirmation on screen before making a hard cut back to Emerald.
Its like the setup was to give the viewer Emerald's interpretation of events, to add more weight and tension to the following events... which wouldnt have been as empathetic and strong if we knew he was alive, while Emerald was distraught and struggling to continue with the plan.

That's interesting. When I saw him sitting on the horse like that under the sign, I immediately thought she was seeing him after he died the way OJ saw his father after his death. The other reason was because I don't think he did the "I see you" motion with his fingers towards her, like he did a few times. I love that it was ambiguous.
@@filmcrit yea and another part of the reason i dont think he was dead was because of all the circumstances the horse named "Lucky" was put in consistently throughout the film, with the horse always coming out not only ok but in a good standing for the family.
With that kind of consistency, it would also be weird to me for his luck to essentially run out at the end. Like the horse had escaped death and being sold multiple times already by the time OJ got on him to bait the alien.
Im pretty sure the name "Lucky" was narrative tool to describe the horse's function, just like the pale horse name "Ghost" that Otis died on
I’m not gonna lie guys, I’ve seen this movie 3 times and I every single time I get to the end, I change my mind about wether or not I think OJ died. Like I last left off with he lived because we saw that after the aliens ate balloon Jupe, he turned into his saucer form in order to digest. That was until I saw this explained, just now. Watching this ending explained, I think he died because of the scenes before the last one where he walks through the “out yonder “ signs. It could be a very simple foreshadow. I really think this movie is the embodiment of one of those “ choose your path” games, where everyone gets a different ending based on their experiences. It’s honestly brilliant!

I really loved this movie. It kept me so on edge, especially since i didnt watxha single trailer. And the symbolism was good too (after watching some explained videos).
I also don't know why, but this UFO for real made me lose sleep from how scared I was. I don't know why but Peele did something right to make me scared of clouds.

Daniel Kaluella is brilliant in delivering a stoic performance. He conveyed so much emotion with his eyes I love it. The film is light on exposition regarding the creature. No unnecessary government/military plot devices Peele respects the audiences intelligence to interpret the story for themselves. The film is also a love letter to many classic UFO movies.
The cinematography of this film is breathtaking. Every frame is meticulously crafted. It’s not a Jordan Peel movie if it’s not filled to the brim with profound metaphors and keen subtext. The design and nature of the creature, the transparency of the film industry and the understanding of the symbiotic relationship between predators and prey are so intricately conveyed.
This film is so multilayered no doubt it will be studied for years to come. Seen it twice, took my gf to see it a second time, initially she wasn’t thrilled but a few days later she watched it again because it peaked her curiosity. This is the power of film; watching something that sticks in your mind, challenges your beliefs and preconceptions on reality. Can’t wait to watch this again.

The way the alien kinda like crushed its victims with the air then spits out their stuff is insane, this movie definitely gave me an entirely new look on “aliens”
Originally OJ died but the actor convinced Peele to keep him alive. I think this was the better option because I like to think OJ managed to break Jean. A respect was earned between them.
@Daniel Langer If you watch the film Peele even said regarding the ending if you watch the film it's clear what's happened. OJ managed to gain Jean Jacket's respect before it moved onto Em. The sequence of events from the last time we see OJ and Em riding off, it's clear time wise Jean didn't eat him before moving onto Em. Watch it again it's clear that it happens. Also saw somewhere that the original fate was changed.
Glad I got the chance to see this in theaters, this made me afraid to be in wide open areas lol. Then to not use actual aliens but make the ship an entity within itself, fuckin brilliant. Scared the shit outta me lol.
Yeah very creative I’m tired of seeing the cliche grey alien humanoid that we’ve been seeing for 50 years. This was a new take and I love it. Really opens for interpretation on what the creature really is. A lot say it looks like a biblical accurate Angel
One theory that I haven't heard been talked about was that the alien creates atmospheric/weather manipulations. It uses a cloud as a form of cover, and we hear both OJ and Jupe talk about a storm that's forecasted to come. We see that "storm" in the form of the alien spewing out water, together with the blood, and other non-biological items.

Reminds me of the Atmospheric Jellyfish cryptids, literal giant jellyfish like entities that live amongst the clouds.
Jellyfish are already very otherworldly looking creatures so it wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort convergent evolution that resulted in a similar creature.

Absolutely loved this movie. Thought it was properly scary at points. Was driving through southern Utah (similar landscape) and kept looking at the clouds to make sure they moved. Amazing twists, acting, creature design, hit every box for me.
I loved the fact that..when angel was one super excited... him talkin' about all those space allien stuff to cheer up grumpy OJ...as in when the hunting spree started by that monster..he was the one to get scared and strung more than anyone...😂

There’s many hieroglyphics of flying saucers and creatures in the sky. What if this is what ancient civilizations were seeing ? This menacing creature eating people from the sky. It’s much more interest than a flying metallic disc that’s probably empty
Watched this film twice now with my bff and we've both put it in our top 5. We might even go a third time. AMAZING film. We don't think OJ is a ghost at the end, we think he survives - because there's no other scene where hallucinations are even hinted at during the movie. All the POV of the characters is shown as reality, not as unreliable. That's our two cents.
I agree! Om the second viewing Emerald was clenching her eyes shut and at first I thought she was getting ready to turn around to put on a show for everyone crowding behind her in the background,, but I think she was checking to see if OJ was a hallucination or not lmao

Not gonna lie seeing the 3 little fake aliens had me off the seats like dicaprio in once upon a time in hollywood 🤣
I also found that there was mirroring between the hat that Jupe wore and the shape and color of the alien. There's even foreshadowing of this when his wife places his cowboy hat on his head just before he heads out to draw the alien in. She's the one who puts it on his head, as she's the one "running" the show, but he pulls the hat down, as if he's accepting the role ahead of him.
One of the absolute best creature designs I've ever seen. Fantastic movie.

I'm gonna believe that Jean is a biblically accurate angel. The design of its true form seems heavily inspired by what we know angels to look like. Also, one of the designers for Jean Jacket said that it could've survived it's apparent death, so here's hoping for a sequel of some sort that explores this creature in a bit more capacity!
Apparently the design was also inspired by the angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion. Which is also pretty close to biblically accurate angels in terms of looking like nightmare fuel.

I know some people didn't like this, but I think this was a refreshing movie to watch. The Gordy scenes didn't make sense to me until later. I think Peele hit it out if the ballpark with this movie.
