- Featured in Stranger Things, The Mind Flayer is an entity originating from the Upside Down, an alternate dimension where the eldritch god is king.
The entirety of the Upside Down is like one gigantic hivemind connected and controlled by the Mind Flayer. As an amalgam of all energy and life in the parallel dimension, the entity has Nigh-Omnipotence and reigns in the Upside Down with limitless power.

Hopefully in Season 5 we get to see much more of the Upside Down, and potentially other dimensions as well. It would be cool if there was some sort of god-like pantheon that controls the Upside Down and other dimensions separate of our own world.
What I want for the spin off is the Feywild, the realm of fairies.
The god-hand.
The Right Side Up?
Concidering they are drawing inperations from DnD heavily, including it's use of other realms and dimensions. What's to stop them from drawing on other aspects from the lore. Such as the DnD Gods?
@@itskyyuuuu please no eclipse for the stranger things gang
Something that interests me about the Upside-down is that it's not a 100% reflection of Hawkins. In Season 4, Episode Seven, it's revealed that the Upside-down is based on Hawkins at the time the "Mother Gate" was opened by Eleven in Season 1. This was explained when Nancy, Eddie, Steve, and Robin went to get guns at Nancy's home in her room. Not only were they completely absent, but her room in the real world no longer has some of the stuff in the Upside-down version. Even her diary was present, but the entries end the exact date Bill Buyers went missing.
So, basically, the Upside-down we see is just a dark snap shot of Hawkins at a specific point in time.
I figured since Vecna was psychic, and so was El, that El basically banished him to a prison inside his own mind, but because he's psychic, he made it a real place. The Upside Down would just be how Vecna sees Hawkins. Empty, dark, and unsurvivable.
@@Jon-jt9fy it could also be a reflection of when Eleven first opened a gate back the the Upside Down, which allowed Vecna to create a dark mirror of the town.
@@Jon-jt9fy trapped him in his own mind by disintegrating him?
@@John-Doe-Yo i mean, they're psychic and telekinetic..so..MAYBE!?
@@Jon-jt9fy I never thought about it too much I figured it was a place that already existed
I saw a Reddit post by someone who worked for Wizards of the Coast early in its days. He said that the kids are most likely using the Greyhawk set of DND and they’re influenced by the themes, characters and story of it. Vecna is in that set and I believe he was introduced there. There’s a theory that Lydia, the goddess of music, knowledge and daylight (and is also in the Greyhawk set and fans think she is his somewhat antithesis) is referenced in Stranger Things as the *knowledge* of how to bring people out of Vecna’s curse using *music* can bring them back into the *light* . It could be looking too deep, but it’s a neat theory.
The Duffer brothers have been very open about acknowledging the direct influence of D&D (and lots of other media) on Stranger Things so I don’t think it’s reading too much into it at all.
That’s freaking awesome!
Yes, in fact the Stranger Things kids used Max's favorite music to break from Vecna's dreamscape.
"The upside down atmosphere is very toxic just like Twitter" I love that quote.
The big question is when the Stranger Things kids went into the Upside Down, they didn't need suits. And can breathe the air.
Eddie was such a great character and actor. I can't imagine how it could have been done better. He had everything, including his own character arc.
He was brilliant!
In season 5 Vecna will receive Eddie to become his minion vampire.
I think he forgot to mention that time in the upside down doesn’t flow like ours. Nancy said that the house she went in for her guns was stuck two years in the past, the same time Will went missing. This would suggest that the Mind Flayer models the dimension after its victims, feeding off their memory to create an physical version of what they remember
The problem is we are dealing with the whole mirror image of a wrecked world of Hawkings. So if everyone's image is only a small memory of their past, The rest of the dimensional world has expanded beyond their memories. Also when Vecna came into the Upside Down, he supposed to memories of his childhood in Hawkings but instead it's a arid wasteland of floating rocks, Amber clouded atmosphere and democreatures scavenging for food.
@@jacobtennyson9213 because Vecna was the first conscious mind besides the Shadow King, aka Mind Flayer, to exist. And as such, a new mindscape to use for a god to create
@@zacheryschmidt2611 And Vecna did not create the Upside Down. He was banished.
I’m about 99.999999% sure that season 4 wasn’t a retcon but simply a prologue. it happened before season 1, that gate in season 1 was the second gate opened. Brenner getting 011 to search for “spies” in season 1 was him actually getting 011 looking for 001, he knew he was in there cause he watched the security tape and in turn gets her to look deeper and to connect to the upside down strengthening her powers to get 001 back. Her repressing what happened was why Brenner needed to test on her to get her stronger to open the gate as she repressed her powers and memory’s that got her to open the gate. When the gate was opened Brenner immediately sent in people to go out and find 001.
Giving the writers too much credit tbh
Trust me… these writers didn’t come up with that. It’s a retcon they just blatantly deny😂.
@@dynamite_dynamite5954 No, it's not a retcon. If you actually pay attention and watch the show you'll see that it all adds up. OP is right, the time whe El made contact with the Demogorgon was when the gate opened for a second time, with the barrier between the worlds being much weaker now.
@@dynamite_dynamite5954 you do realise the duffer brothers knew they wanted to do 5 seasons and knew roughly the story they wanted to tell
@@benspooner7396 That doesn’t mean they didn’t change plans they had🤷♀️.
I really hope that in season 5 it is revealed that the mind flayer is still in control and is simply using Vecna for it's own goals
I know 🤞
Vecna is doing the Mind Flayer's bidding.
Stranger Things: The First Shadow reveals it originally was nicknamed Dimension X by Martin Brenner who was already aware of it’s existence because his father was a lone survivor of a ship that used experimental cloaking technology that accidentally teleported to the other dimension and a bunch of Demogorgons killed all the other crew members.
That one, fundamental principle of cosmic horror.
There's something...*out there*. We can't see it, it's not aware of us until we turn over the wrong stone, sending up a beacon to something old. Something hungry. that comes from a place where it can finally get out.
I have two theories for Season 5. 1. Will is going to be tempted by Vecna, who preys on his fears/feelings of isolation to trigger powers that have the potential to outclass even Eleven. 2. The Mind Flayer/Particle Cloud is revealed to be the Lovecraftian force we initially assumed it to be, tempting Henry from the Upside Down and guiding him to where they eventually meet and Henry is able to give it the sentience it needed to stage a trans-universal takeover.
Nah, I think the Mind Flayer was corrupted by Vecna, it was just there doing it's thing.
theory 2 is what I reckoned the state of things to be after finishing season 4. only to go online afterwards and see people stating that Vecna was the big bad all along.
I honestly never got that vibe anytime during the season, or felt that the story has been retconned at all to fit with the direction they are going in currently
@@personanonmaga5178 I really hope that's not the route they go. In terms of different kinds of retcons, I really don't like those of the 'it was really ME who was behind all the conflict of the past seasons/movies.' To me, it invalidates the threats in the previous works by delegitimizing the antagonists, making them lackeys to an unseen bigger bad, and it takes away the new villain's ability to stand on their own two feet as their own unique entity. If they stick with the route of Vecna having been behind EVERYTHING that's gone on, I feel as if it'd really take away from the overall mystique/cosmic horror element that was my favorite aspect of the Mind Flayer/The Upside Down.
When it was revealed that Vecna gave it shape I always though that they have like a connection that was formed. I mean we see Henry do things once he becomes Vecna that no one else can do from what we've seen. From taking people's souls, to the upside down hive-mind. I feel like the flayer gave him the power he needed since we don't see Henry doing stuff that we've seen in past seasons.
@@agiammarco94 I'm holding out hope that it's a symbiote/host relationship. The Mind Flayer/particles are powerful on their own, but Henry/001 came along to give it sentience/a more strategic way of doing things.
I like they tried something on their own, different dimensions is not a first but they did it right. They set up their universe, set up the rules, added things on it. I had lost faith after s2+3 but s4 delivered. exploring the upside down is certainly the right direction.
They could connect even more and go in the way franchises like the dark tower went. They could set up more dimensions in other seasons possibly in spin offs and then wove a central story around them.
And in the final stranger things spin off we could see all the protagonists from these spin offs banding together to face the ultimate threat or sth
My man is actually giving DnD background lessons. I love it. This channel is one of my favorites on RUclips.
I don’t Henry necessarily created the mind flayer. It clearly existed long before anything else did in the upside he merely used his powers to give it form. As all humans do when they seek to make something new they make things in their own image. Seeking to simplify and streamline what has already existed and has its own power and rules of how well it can manipulate that power.
The principal applies to a lot of fantasy and real world things. But we as humans often seek out a means to replicate that or completely rewrite and remake it how we see and feel it should be.
In Henry’s case He’s just the only one who’s been the upside down the longest and the only other living life form who’s power is great enough to not make the mind flayer absorb him but see him as an ally. And Henry reigns supreme there because all other intelligent life is linked to the hive mind and the mind flayer itself has its own agenda there for Henry has gone unchallenged and allowed to make it in his own image
That is correct. I agree with you. The show explains about the origins of Henry Creel and Vecna.
As always, GREAT content and fantastic editing. Congrats!
Thank you :)
A so more freaky version of Wonderland. Alice better get street if she wants to survive there
So, American Mcgee's Alice?
"Sort of like Twitter".
What a perfect analogy!
My theory for the hierarchy system of The Upside Down:
•The Mind Flayer (The Brain/Queen/King/Battery Source of the Upside Down)
•Vecna (5 star general & Right hand man of the Flayer; its herald)
•Demogorgons & Demodogs (Foot Soldiers)
•Demobats (Foot Soldiers/Spies)
•Demospiders (resident life forms & possible foot soldiers)
•The Vines (Sentinent fauna)
•The Spider Monster (Physical Avatar for The Mind Flayer)
•The Hospital Monster (lesser form of The Spider Monster)
•Flesh Thralls (separated individual pieces of the The Spider Monster and Flayed victims (both humans and animals) decomposed and have their own independence and sentience)
•The Flayed (Human drones)
•The Particles (Fragments of The Mind Flayer)
Another great video as always. Your editing and narration are always fantastic. I’m so excited to see what they do with season 5. I hope we can learn even more about the Upside Down. It seems like such an interesting place.
My favorite part of Stranger Things is the lore of the Upside Down.
The way Eddie and toothless distracted was my fav thing ever.. absurd but so is the whole show :)
His name is Dustin. Show some respect.
I always thought that the upside down was like xen from half life, a border world between dimensions and universes
It probably is and I was just thinking of it being like a hub between all places and man I got to play half Life and beat them the Lore is so good especially the aliens that make up the combine empire very similar to the covenant.
“Becomes damaging after prolonged exposure… sort of like Twitter!”

Thank heavens someone finally compared the upside down to the shadowfell!
We need a spinoff series where they encounter the feywild.
Your channel kicks some serious a$$. Keep up the great work!

3:41 😂 I mean he's not wrong. I've seen it spread to RUclips too.
Facts😂
right around 1:35:00 of season 4 ep 7, when 001 is falling, it looks like there is "rock" on both sides. with "lightning" jumping between them
It looks more like that is the space between two planes, and the upsidedown is just the other side of our plane where it is growing like cancer.
The breach that 011 caused at the start of season 1 allowed the upside down to become a sort of twisted reflection of Hawkins at around that point in time. I am curious how far you can travel in the upside down before it becomes the rocky terrain that its natural state.
I’m not sure when it happened, but I started consuming your content like it was smooth jazz. I wish this was more like Silent Hill instead of just “another evil dimension ruled by random evil ruler ”, this revelation was such a letdown and basically a trope at this point.
People have used a designation or a naming of something in order to give them some feeling of control over it. When you have an understanding of what something is even just by name it feels less scary or dangerous.
I just want this series to end with Cthulhu rising from the deep sea amidst the storm and everyone looking up like they know they're fucked.

The bats should have carried away Eddie's body to make it a mystery
The demobats made Eddie a vampire, to do the Mind Flayer and Vecna's bidding.
I have a theory about why the upside down looks like Hawkins, why it looked like a weirder when Henry fell into it, and I think it explains a lot perfectly.
(Warning this is long. Tl;dr, Henry already Took over a bunch of different versions of earth in search of the one he's from. Read the rest for more detail.)
The World that henry falls into is clearly very different from Hawkins. Henry couldn't shape it into an exact replica of Hawkins from 1983 when the gate opened; because first of all, why? What's the point? Second, How would he get every detail down if he never been to Hawkins in 1983?
My theory, is that the upside down as we know it is earth from a universe where henry won, and that the world where the mind flayer originates is different from the upside down. He made contact with at least one other version of Hawkins, Took control of it, killed everyone, for one of two reasons that I could come up with:
Reason number one: He needed to invade a version of Hawkins to make finding his home dimension easier, somehow. This feels like it has a number of plotholes that I'm sure could be thought of at the top of anyone's head, so we're going to put that theory on hold.
Reason two: He's using the brute force method of finding his home dimension to get revenge on Eleven; He's going through dimensions one by one and trying to find his original version of Hawkins. If this one is true, this means he could have invaded (depending on whether or not there are infinite alternate universes) Dozens, Hundreds or even Thousands of worlds using the mind flayer.
Imagine you're Henry. You Have control of the mind flayer, your living in another dimension, and you try to find your home dimension by connecting to it with your psychic powers. You break through Hawkins lab or you send a bunch of Monsters to do that for you. They kill everyone, the vines spread, you win. But for whatever reason, whatever crucial difference there is, you realize this isn't your Hawkins. So you try again. Different versions of eleven open up gates and let monsters through. You take over two, then three, then five, then ten, a hundred, a thousand, and more dimensions and worlds in a desperate attempt to find Eleven.
You stop sending in many monsters to each dimension, or looking to closely at each one. It become monotonous and hopelessly boring. But then something piques your interest. One of your Monsters was killed, by one of the Elevens. You quickly realize, perhaps through the gaze of a kidnapped and rescued child who is connected to the hive mind, that this is YOUR Hawkins.
You Relocate the mind flayer to the Upside down that Hawkins is connected to, which explains why it wasn't present during season one. You send dozens of baby Demogorgons to finish the job. You send the mind flayer to wait by the gate for elven to come so you can finally kill her. But she seals the gate. And for the first time in what for Henry must be decades, he was thwarted.
The gate is opened briefly by the Russians and henry takes this opportunity to strike and almost kills eleven after a while of preparations, but then it's closed and his plan fails. From there Henry Relocates himself to the Upside down to break into Hawkins himself, and brings his army of bats. And that brings us up to season four.
Sorry this was super long, But I feel like the "Vecna has already won Thousands of times over" theory makes the story feel more impactful and more interesting. Please use this, Duffer Brothers.
Thank you for reading.
You search it to far. The Duffer Brothers just found their inspiration in the videoclip The Black Parade from MCR, they are in their mid 30's so i think they were fans of them back then. Search it up and you see the connection of the Upside Down.
@@switchblade800x3 Yes, the video does look like it's the inspiration to the upside down. Your probably right about that.
But I don't think the in-universe reason why the upside-down functions the way it does is because it's a My Chemical Romance reference.
This is a theory about how the Upside down came to be in the world of Stranger Things, not where the concept of the Upside Down created by the Duffer Brothers came from.
@@Fleshi_Guy615 I don't mean that they refer The Upside Down to the band, I just mean that the scenery and atmosphere is like the video, they could just as well portray The Upside Down with a reddish scenery like in Vecna's mind but it looks suspiciously like the land of The Black Parade, only a bit darker and slimier, I'm just saying.
That is correct.
@@jacobtennyson9213 Do you mean it is actually canon and that I was a fool for not realizing it, or that you think that it's a good theory, or is it some other third thing? Either way, thanks

Yeah, I've been there firsthand, in FarCry! It ain't so bad provided you have plenty of ammo. :)
Its the ideal battleground for both the Predator and the Xenomorph
Yes. Although IDK if the Xenomorph Queen would have a chance against the Mind Flayer unless it took the physical form from S3. The Mind Flayer is a cosmic entity that’s the embodiment of the Upside down so it’s shadow form is a no no! The Predators definitely would crush all the monsters such as Demogorgons and whatnot, and the Xenomorphs and Demogorgons definitely would have good fights. By the way, the Bioraptors from Pitch Black and Death Angels from A Quiet Place would also give them a run for their lunch money lol and if The Thing from The Thing fought The Mind Flayer’s physical form it could also be a cool fight
"Toxic like Twitter" LMAO 😂
Honestly there are probably more organisms like vecna there in charge of their own territory and they all answer to one Lord of The upside down borrys himself there is so much I want to see more of it more villains that are in charge of the mindless beast that serve them are connected to them and borrys gives them power as long as they serve him.

My biggest question about the upside down is as follows:
How do buildings and stuff show up in the upside down? Like, the school and a bunch of houses are present, but where did they come from? If a new school or neighborhood or something gets built, does it just like magically show up in the upside down?
It makes no sense but thats just the element of the horror.
Do an video on Elven.
I can't escape feeling of Brian Lumley's Necroscope similiarities. Gate to another world, monsters, russian scientists, government secret projects. It's all and more in the books.
I don't remember the scene at 02:11. Which season was it?
Would be really cool having a spin-off show, sat in this world, showing off the multiverses 👀
I was really hoping they’d lean into the idea that the version of the upside down we see is a corruption of Kreels doing. The original universe being harsh but noting like the upside down.
so what i thought about is that when henry said that when he kills he doesn't just kill the people are still w him in his head, so maybe that explains why nancy's diary wasn't filled.
barb died of the demogorgon and she prob knew nancy's room.
I hear there’s a new Stranger Things crossover comic series with TMNT currently running. 😍
Okay I have a question. In season 1 and 2 they mention the atmosphere in the upside down is both Toxic and Radioactive. However in season 1 Joyce and Hopper both take their helmets off, Nancy goes in unprotected, and in season 4 Nancy Steve Dustin, Eddie and Robin all go in without hazard suits. So, are they gonna get super cancer? What about Will? He spent a little over a week in the Upside down with no PPE.
How are they not puking blood and dying of radiation sickness?
If I remember correctly the Shadowfell in 5th edition is the dark reflection of the feywild.
I forgot. I used to play Hellfire Warrior, a computer game by EPIX. This was in the eighties. I cheated too. I found out how to multiply powerful weapons, so that when ones I have been using wearout, I could have duplicates.
The Sword of Truth series has a Vale of Shadows of sorts. I’m thinking it’s similar to Wraithworld in LOTR series as well.
Although d&d may explain it 001 must have made the place resemble the town himself for some reason. As when he arrived it was just rocks and was yellow in colour. No features at all of the town when he got there
The Upside Down feels like Malachor 5 from Kotor 2 after the Mass Shadow Generator goes boom
The Upside Down Realm looks just like the Realm in the Poltergeist reboot!
So then what was that rocky plain that Henry was at when he gave The Mind Flayer form? Is that the Upside Down just before Venca formed it into a twisted version of Hawkins? Or is it a completely other dimension? Separate from the Upside Down itself?
Yes, but an alternative world of the Upside Down before Vecna, The Mind Flayer and democreatures moved on to the next world.
I haven't watched this show ever for the algorithm.
4 the algorithm!
The Upside Down as a concept went seriously downhill in S3 and especially S4 (though better than S3). But the theory at 2:30 are superb and call back to earlier theories. It's ashame it's another multiverse but is so clever it works.
There’s nothing wrong with The Upside Down being an eldritch alternative dimension that’s also a hive minded giant Superorganism being. It makes it scary. The Mind Flayer the intelligence, The Demogorgons Demodogs Demobats being drones, The Vines are living fauna that can sneak attack you at any moment, and Vecna an outsider who The Flayer lets connect to the hive mind and become its herald. Really cool stuff. By the way, have you seen anything about the VR game that came out recently? It’s very lore heavy and interesting.
It was a missed opportunity to have all the upside down creatures speak in an Australian accents.
Happy Gilmore's happy place is a superpower.
So elevens a spyker from 40k. Cool.
This theory has some weight to it. It's possible to travel between Prime Material Planes (ie settings) by travelling through the Plane of Shadow, representing the multiverse.
