The show lost its energy a lot when they killed off James Evans Sr. Producers bit their noses off despite their faces. Having a strong father presence on a black tv show was great to see. As a kid, I stopped watching after the first few episodes after James’ death because it was no longer the same show. John Amos is an amazing actor
The show ended up failing horribly later after he left I heard and the same from Sanford and son. I wasn't born during it but I watched it later in the 80's as a young kid with my pops.

I liked laughing at JJ's antics and the shade he and Thelma threw at each other, but it always bugged me that they had him playing Boo Boo the Fool instead of getting real with his artistry and getting an apprenticeship while going to school to ease the burden for his family.
