- Learn how to create a monitor that can show what a camera sees.
Rundown
We start out by creating the monitor and applying a monitor texture to one of its faces. Then we create the camera, give it a name, and set that name as the target camera on the monitor.

i love how hammer never gets updated so all the tutorials are still relevant
even 12 years later Lol
@@alex135t LOL
14 years later, found this helpful
Lmao, I was about to say this.
@ac-Lukesbiggestfan yeah, I’ve been going back into source map making, and the tool is actually really well made.
Thank you man! This is exactly what i am looking for, I only have a 20 hours experience and this is my first map.
10 Years passed, But it still helps a ton!
Hell yeah, this is what I'm talking about. Decided I wanted to make some cameras and displays for some of my maps and bam. There's a tutorial right here. Thanks!!
Thank you!
I'm glad to hear you find my tutorials easy to understand! :)
God this IS old but still helpful
even after 10 years this is very helpful, thank you very much!
@ZPS0 That's too bad, try following the tutorial one more time and make sure you do exactly like I do in the video and you may figure out your problem. Good luck!
@Dearnus Hi, like it says in the video, you can only have one camera active at one time, but you can have more than one monitor active. So you can show the same camera on several monitors, but you can't show different cameras on several monitors.
@TheEPICtrainrider You can use inputs/outputs to turn one of the cameras on and the other one off.
very happy to see a tutorial that is worthy and greatly explained, can't wait to try this in my csgo map.
Still helps in 2022 thanks!
This tutorial really helped, thanks!
Glad you found it useful! :D
There really is no reason for the player to actually have a model in a single player game. So that's why. :)
@PytoX, llakallaka, Bearrick
Thank you for the kind words, I sure will keep them coming!
Remember, tutorial suggestions are appreciated! :)
@OperationTK Hehe, glad it worked out for you! :)
@Mariuspersem Yes, he made that clear in the video he directed me to earlier. :)
Thank you for the suggestion! I'll add it to the list. :)
Awesome. This told me exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Thank you, your praise is appreciated. :)
@MurdocGaming You can only have one camera active at one time in your level. You need to turn off the first camera before you can show the second one. You can then show the output on more than one monitor though.
Thanks man, I've been stumped for a while with this
same aha
@0RobinHood1 Yeah that's no problem at all. They even do that in HL2.
@OperationTK Yes, you can only have one active camera at one time, but you can have as many monitors as you like. It's a technical limitation of the engine.
helpful, even 12 years later!
@greenpeacekiller52 Really? I can clearly see it on 480p, just expand the video if it's too small. I thought for sure that pretty much any monitor texture would work, that's why I didn't annotate it. I'll add one now though since there obviously is the possibility of it not working with some textures. :)
If you don't find the entity you need try this.
In Hammer, go to the 'tools' tab, then go to 'options...' When that is
opened, go to the toppish area where it says, 'game data files:' Then
hit the 'add' button. A bunch of .fgd files will appear and you need to
add the hl2mp.fgd file. Depending on what game you want to edit, you can
add more of these, but make sure you have hl2mp.fgd at all times. Now
go create a screen!

Thanks!
i know im late but thx you totally saved me
@tikkumanne Like the annotation says at 1:20 you can only have one camera active at any time, but more than one monitor. Though there are workarounds that can be used in certain situations.
@DarkForces1994 In Hammer, go to tools > options > game data files and add hl2mp.fgd to the list and the entity should hopefully appear.
Awesome! Glad I could help you! :D
@z0mgzt0m It might not be there in all games, it's available for me in HL2:ep2 at least and I remember that it's in ep1 and HL2 as well.
Every time i add a func_monitor and point_camera the monitor turns black every time why do you don't put in light and env_sun
@rayman1014 I know what you mean. It's possible to do that (but it's kind of hard to make it look really good). I don't have a tutorial on how to do that, but you could request it in the Moderator on my channel page so people can vote on it if you want me to make one!
ugh, finally, thank you so much !
@greenpeacekiller52 You can see the name of the texture in the video. It's called perftest/dev_tvmonitor1a.
Thanks, Man!
thank you so much!
Nice tut (again)
I NEEDED THIS THANK YOU!
is it normal for it to be missing textures?
@o0ZporK0o It's used for all real time cameras in HL2. :)
simple accurute and fast. in other words perfect
Cheers Silwerfish, handy tutorial :)
Hello this is used by mirors for reflection dude ?
@Blontra1 Hey look I had the same problem, I tried this very good tutorial about 2 weeks ago and it worked. Its not gonna be in your list of entities, but click on the block you want presss ctrl t and it should come up as one entitty from the list.
"The model you're speaking about is the model you see when you add a info_player_start in Hammer, right?"
i'm sure he meant the model in the Half-life games when you bring up the console and type "thirdperson"
thank you
@nikki969nikki You need to go to Tools>options>Game Data Files and click the add button and add every one of those .fgd files! Otherwise hammer will not see certain functions that could have been used.
why my hammer doesnt work? it shows only black
on viewport
@Silwerfish oh no it does i found the problem you have to add an fdg file in the options to get it working :D
@sasuke22sasuke It should still be there, it might not be available in all games, but I know it's there in HL2, Ep1, Ep2 and HL2DM at least.
No I'm not wrong.
1. The model you're speaking about is the model you see when you add a info_player_start in Hammer, right? Because that model is just used in Hammer.
2. Portal is not Half-Life 2, in portal it is relevant to see yourself, that's why they gave you a model.
3. This isn't about wether it HAS a model or not since we can clearly see that the player does not have a model by watching the video above.
It's on the list. ;)
question. does no draw and brush distance still work with cameras that are far away from the viewable monitor.... i.e. ill be across the map and many many no draw wall render protections away for optimization. so being clear across the map from the camera, will i still be able to see the players and props? sorta like it fails to do with GMOD cameras?
Do you have a tutorial for displacments?
@Halo4Follower On the Wiki it says that entity is used to control the players camera. If you can confirm if it does (or does not) work with point_viewcontrol, please let me know and I'll update the video.
point_camera and monitor were removed by valve in the last update or the one before.
@Silwerfish
if someone gets a new install of sdk those ents will not be there, same goes for the vol light textures, valve removed them or hid them someplace at the very least.
I have searched through all my gfc files for them and no luck then again i dont have ep2 either... so maybe thats part of the issue but i though HL2 had them by default.
@00vitality00 Hey that's pretty cool, I didn't know about that!
I apologize.
@Blontra1 I don't know of an easy solution to that yet, it seems like Valve have removed it.
@DarkForces1994 There is a point_camera, it's just hidden
Hey, when I try to create two separate cameras and monitors, both monitors show the same camera view. I have set the camera names different and each monitor links to a different camera, but both show the same view in game. Have you heard of this before, and do you know what I may be able to do about it?
Thank u
Odd... I linked all of it, But the screen shows a Strange Cyan and yellow Textured Pattern
No Clue... lol... Maybe This Method Doesn't Work vey well anymore?
@Silwerfish sorry, didn't see that xP
awesome m8, keep them coming
@Silwerfish yup
@Peonygreenleaf Some people have said they can't find them, but I still have the entities in Ep2, so... I don't know really...
RATE
thx
@moviemaker310 All outputting their feeds to different monitors at the same time?
cool done! great job :)
@KillTheGrasshopper They might not work in some games, I use normal Episode 2 editor.
@Peonygreenleaf Yeah they should be in HL2 as well... Damn Valve for being annoying! The functionality of the entities is still there (otherwise the cameras in HL2 singleplayer wouldn't work), they just removed them from the entity listings it seems... >.>
So it's still possible to add cameras, but it's a whole lot more annoying...
@z0mgzt0m Are you sure it works in the game when you do that?
"func_monitor" doesnt exist anymore. is there another way to do this?
It does exist
@@nanoodev4715 no it doesnt!
what are you running a version from the 90's?!?!
@@rektaldo_ No, it must be the game you're using Hammer on. Check the wiki: developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Func_monitor
@@nanoodev4715 yes u r right about that. I was looking for func_monitor on CS:GO.
AWESOMESAUCE
I don't know whats going rong, buyt it doesn't work..
11 years later and this is still not out of date...
Valve pls fix
"Don't forget to *rate*, *favourite* and subscribe
Damn this video is old
make a rave with rave lights and stuff and music
what about making some cliffside ? :D
@nikki969nikki Hi, what game are you mapping for?
lol func_monitor doesnt exist for me :S
because hes a vampire
it does not display gordon, because there is no worldmodel for the player.
@Theyallfloatdownhere Nope.
@Silwerfish wtf, i can have 10 cameras active!
Off-topic, but you sound like Pewdiepie.
it is a bug of the engine,it's not your fault
Nut scripts to move, edit, delete, and create entitys.
Am I Late?
point_viewcontrol I believe it is now.
viewcontrol controls the view of the player.
that's how the tv made in hl2 apartments..
YOLO
@gamecube762 Yes I do! :)
watch?v=BTFRODF57Fo
in portal 2 theres no camera texture
Maybe it's named portal , lol
