  • This video looks at anaerobic conditions inside of a compost pile. We look at two piles, the first is aerobic and representative of our operations while the second pile due to specific circumstances has gone anaerobic. This material in the second pile is five weeks old and left uncovered during several days of rain. It had not been turned in around 1 week. The pile had several unusual characteristics: The temperature of the core of the pile was significantly lower than the outside of the pile, the material at the core smelled distinctively anaerobic while the outside was earthy, and the compost pile divided into three visible strata.
