1.) Haven't seen The Holdovers yet, but now I'm psyched to! The director has done some GREAT movies of the last 25 years! Have you seen "Election", with Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick? Or "Citizen Ruth", with Laura Dern? Oh my god. You're in for a treat. "Sideways" and "About Schmidt" are also excellent and one of a kind, from the early 2000s. All of those movies Oscar nominated for acting. Beautiful one-of-a-kind films, and it sounds like "Holdovers" is up to par. Will check it out!
2.) Ooooo Clark Gable! Yes! He stars in Mutiny On The Bounty, too! The following year's Best Picture winner! A fascinating, true story. Of all the best picture winners of the 30s, that's the one that holds up the best, in my opinion. I'll be interested to see if you agree after you've gotten through the decade. (no rush, though!) (the book its based on - which is the actual journals of the Bounty's captain! - is also good reading).
3.) Question: how do you compare It Happened One Night to the previous winners from the 30s? I agree 100% with your rating....but would you agree it plays "fresher" than the previous three? PS: Not "the" first rom-com, but a majorly influential and archetypal one.
4.) Thanks for the tip about Lisa Frankenstein! Hadn't heard of it, but I'm Class of '87, so I'm intrigued, just for that!
5.) Forgive me if I now go on a 40-minute rant about Maestro: Only ONE scene of him conducting???!!!! Are you kidding me??!!! Biopics about musicians are almost always horrible. They always just move along way too fast, exactly as you say, you never learn anything about what makes them great. They're too busy rushing to get to all the gossip and dirt, the alcoholism or the drug abuse, the sexual stuff, etc etc. The only way to understand what makes a musician great....is by listening to their music! And then maybe watching some clips, some interviews and reading about the backstory! And that takes more time than a movie can contain.
(also....invariably these movies where they pretend to be super famous people whose work can be easily found by doing a search here on You Tube or somewhere else.....they end up looking like Saturday Night Live sketches to me, actors doing impressions of famous people.....but without the jokes! If you search Leonard Bernstein, you'll get TONS of clips, interviews, hours and hours and hours of performances. Bradley's no Bernstein! Oscar bait indeed! In the 60s, Leonard Bernstein did a series of TV specials, something like "Leonard Bernstein's Concerts For Young People". Mindblowing. He's got an orchestra right there and he sits and talks to you and the audience and teaches and inspires. Also an amazing 1967 TV special, "Inside Pop" where he enthusiastically raves at long length about the genius of The Beatles, complete with musical analysis. And of course any clip of him conducting....he's VERY memorable and imitable. Extremely dramatic and expressive. How could they leave that out?
6.) Which brings me to..........ten nominees for Best Picture is STUPID. They don't make ten worthy films a year anymore. Most of these years, other than the first few, it was FIVE Best Picture nominees. That's a contest. Ten??? That's just an excuse to put "Academy Award Nominee" on the poster, because they know people will do exactly as you did, and as I've done a million times: make it a point to see every nominee before the ceremony! They JUST made it ten nominees per year within the last ten years or so! It was always five! All of the INCREDIBLE movies that never even got nominated over the decades.....and now Maestro gets in?????
7.) Alas......I have not seen Avatar the series! But your rant is HILARIOUS!!!! I just KNOW you're right 200%! Ok, I really have written a 40 minute rant, and I can't imagine you'd read all this so let me just say.....see you on "How Green Was My Valley"! Checking that out next!
(PS.....and YES, I cannot stand when they cast someone not period-appropriate in a movie. Where you can just see it in the face! And totally.....there's a "70s" type of face, a late 60s-70s type of face to be exact! Dazed And Confused nailed it, for instance. Other movies look like they're playing dress up, with fake mustaches and wigs. Good to hear.

I've heard Alexander Payne's name many times through the years but I think this is the first time I've seen a comprehensive list of his films! Mutiny on the Bounty is on my list for May, I'm holding myself to it 😂😂 So far I think It Happened One Night is the best winner that I've seen from the 30s. "Fresher" like you said and it's also aged the best I think. All your issues with biopics about musicians is exactly what happens in Maestro. Advertised as "here's why he's one of the greatest musicians of all time" but instead they focused a lot on his marital issues and the fact that he might have been gay. But even then, I knew all of that already so I still wasn't learning anything. Bradley Cooper boasted about taking years of conducting lessons to film that one scene too which... good for him I guess. I'd like to believe they started nominating 10 movies a year so they could include different genres, but it's probably for the reason you stated. Thank you about my Avatar rant 😂😂

I have seen the reviews for the creator were so lackluster and I was curious because I do love a good scifi film and yay for it looking visually beautiful but I am never going to watch it >.> The footage being corrupted NOOO that is my worst nightmare. Surprised that lisa frankenstein was so good! I feel like the reviews I have seen for that one were mixed and I wasn't too interested in seeing it in cinema. But if it ends up being on a streaming service I would be happy enough watching it one evening. I do want to watch the holdovers because my sister enjoyed it. But again, another one I am happy to watch when it is out of the cinema and on a streaming service. Oooh I knew you had things to say on ATLA but girl you had THINGS to SAY. Look at me getting a picture and currently filming 🥰 I hate exposition monologuing. I love seeing how you're enjoying the clone wars series. I have been hearing so much about solo leveling now, probably as I like video game animes and concepts. But maybe I would like it more than you as I did like SAO at the time? Undead Unluck sounds promising but I will await your final thoughts and see what happens once all of s1 has aired.

The moment I see Lisa Frankenstein on a streaming service I'm running to your DMs 😂😂 The creators of the live action ATLA had to understand I wasn't gonna show any mercy!!
