I remember this game to be a pod you’d sit in. It was like you were sitting on the bridge with the turning dial on the left arm/hand rest and all the other buttons in the right arm/hand rest.

I use a sample of that synthesized boatswain's whistle as a ringtone on my phone.
It's distinctive and certainly attention-grabbing. I definitely never confuse another person's ringtone for my own, especially as many people tend to use stock ringtones on their phones. It also sets my ringtone apart from some who may use the real boatswain's whistle sound effect from "Star Trek."
This sound is a reasonably accurate reproduction of the same sound effect used in "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan," used when a trainee blows on an electronic boatswain's whistle right before Admiral Kirk boards the Enterprise through the port side torpedo room.

None of the Sega/Gremlin vector games stayed around very long. But if you were lucky enough to find them working somewhere, they really did look nice. The colors were so bright & the images so clear. The monitors ( when working ) really did display those vector graphics beautifully. This was especially true with "Zektor" & "Eliminator" & to a slightly lesser degree "Tac/Scan". Many other vector games from other companies were certainly great games & very addicting. "Tempest" "Space Duel" "CosmiCastle" "Star Wars" "Star Castle" "Asteroids" are some of the games that come to mind. But there was something different about the way the Sega/Gremlin vector games looked & sounded. When you played them, you knew you were playing a game that the engineers at Sega/Gremlin were some how involved. You didn't have to see the logo on the screen or on the marquee. You just knew. Too bad the hardware in the machines themselves was not crafted as well as the games that were inside of them.

Well, at least people can enjoy these games via emulation.
Sure, it's never going to be the same as playing a true vector machine. But better to at least be able to experience them anyway, provided the emulation is accurate and running at full speed, than not being able to at all because of hardware failure.

Funspot/American Classic Arcade Museum in Laconia, NH has a working Star Trek sit-down model, which is particularly cool just for the Enterprise captain's chair with the spinner on one armrest and control buttons on the other. The website mentions that the Electrohome in it has, in fact, caught fire on them at least once.
They also have a Space Fury, the predecessor to Zektor and Eliminator (most memorable for the snotty, cyclopean Alien Commander who talks trash at you through the game).
(they're kind of in a bad way right now because the lockdown has obstructed the bingo games that keep ACAM running--they're taking donations).

@@MrSEA-ok2ll Major Havoc is another Atari one, like Tempest, Space Duel, Star Wars and Asteroids. It was ahead of its time in some ways--a scrolling platformer before Super Mario Bros., crossed with a space shooter, all done in color vector graphics. A really cool game, but *hard* after the first level or so.
Funspot has a whole row of just Atari vector games, and it includes a Major Havoc. I think theirs is a conversion kit from Space Duel (the original dedicated cabinet is particularly hard to find).

A friend of mine who owns an arcade just *gave* me one of these. He knew it was one of my all-time favorites and just couldn''t keep this thing around when he knew what a nightmare it was going to be hardware-wise. The monitor needs a rebuild, so I'll enjoy the process of having a temperamental collectable that I can enjoy both playing, having, and constantly rebuilding.
The game itself is top-notch-- the sound, graphics, and gameplay are terrific, and it'll fit right into my collection of old, obsolete technology. I'll just keep it unplugged unless I'm staying in the room with it!

What a cluster**** system that was! Good god! I've never seen a conversion kit from one manufacturer made to fit another manufacturer's games. That's interesting. It also explains why the Tac Scan and Star Trek machines seemed to always be "out of order" at the local arcade.

I used to have a Sega Shinobi that was built inside an old Williams Joust! cabinet. I figured that out when I decided to refinish the paint and found an ostrich leg and a big W in enamel paint under the black latex.

if that wasn't trouble enough, the poor choices Sega made (especially the Electrohome monitors) often led for this game to be on fire... as in literally, since they became infamous for catching fire, which is a shame since the sit down version was almost like sitting in the Captain's Chair of the USS Enterprise.

I bought one for 650 back in the early 90s. It was in a gas station and the employees were playing it more than working so the owner sold it. Everything worked great. Played it for years until half the screen went out. The insides are nothing like yours. I recall all the boards higher up in the frame. May try and fix it some day.

Found that I trashed the cabinet keys as I forgot what they looked like til I saw the locks again. Just ordered replacement barrel locks but still need to drill the old locks out. Storage is not climate controlled so there will most likely be more issues. Printing all documents that I have found online and hope to open the machine this month. Found from the last symtoms that it may have only needed a solder reflow and cleaning.

    • @strayblackcatsmeow
      @strayblackcatsmeow 2 года назад

Finally got back to the machine. It is actually like the one here except for the power supply looks bigger and no fan on the mainboards. All looks factory. Drilled the locks and cut the padlock off the internal coin box. Inside it had the newspaper add when I bought it. I only paid $200 for it. No date on it. Not bad for the years I got from it. The storage unit is not climate controlled so there is moisture damage. Side art is peeling and junk now. Buttons and spinner feel fine. Monitor board is very dirty. Program boards look clean and new, probably due to the lack of cage fan. Software is PN-700-0109-01 rev F, monitor is a 38-G0803-00 with paddle boards and two 2N6259 transistors. Looks fixable. Will post pics shortly with link.

The *Barrel of Fun* arcade where I lived had one of these but it had the cabinet you would sit inside of, which I liked better because it gave you more of a ship-like feeling. I recall Star Wars also had a "sit down" cabinet for their famous Vector graphics video game as well, which were much more preferred to the stand-up version. I put a LOT of tokens in these games over the one year period I frequented the local arcade. I never knew this console was so poorly designed but I do recall the one Star Trek console the arcade had didn't stay for very long, unlike the ever-popular Donkey Kong game, which enjoyed a long fruitful career of taking childrens money. Ah those were the days...

I remember back in the mid 80s living in Toms River NJ and visiting an arcade reseller nearby. Game was looked at was Star Trek. The voice and vector graphics were sharp at the time. Always wanted to buy one of these cabinets. It's a shame Sega did such a poor job on the hardware, otherwise it's a fun, well programmed game with great sound.
