    As someone who LOVED Game Night's Arkham Horror playthrough, I was so stoked to watch this playthrough. A shame about the loss, though that's not entirely unexpected. Klaw is a much harder villain than Rhino (the starter villain).
    There are a lot of things I'd love to comment on, but I'll try and focus on a few key points. Some are for the Game Night crew, but it's also for people who might be interested in trying this game out, or who are hoping to get better at Marvel Champions after learning the basics.
    - A key turning point in the game happened in Stage 2, when Klaw did a lot of scheming at got to the next phase of his main scheme. This is due to having all 4 players ending the phase in alter ego mode. Now, that choice would have made sense if everyone was low on health and are trying to retreat to fight another day, but none of them took advantage of the fact that Lincoln played Webbed Up, which would cancel two attacks from Klaw. Two players could have stayed in hero form and receive no damage from Klaw because of Webbed Up and the ensuing stun. That way, there would have been much less threat on the main scheme (because Klaw only schemes twice and not four times) without the normal downside of losing hit points from the villain attack. In hindsight, Aaron (Captain Marvel) should have stayed in hero form because of Webbed Up and his high remaining hit points relative to the rest of the team. Then either Nikki or Lincoln could join him in hero form.
    - There aren't a lot of allies being played until the very end, which is a shame given their versatility. They can thwart and attack and, perhaps most importantly, act as meat shields for the players when the villain and minions attack (more experienced players call this practice 'chump blocking'). Sometimes it makes sense to wring out every damage and thwart you can get from allies (eg. What Lincoln did with Daredevil), but more often than not you want to get them at 1 health before throwing them in front of the villain. Perhaps if the Game Night crew was more aggressive in throwing their allies into the villain meat grinder, they would not have had to take some of Klaw's serious body blows (damage normally doesn't spill over from allies to heroes, as Aaron already mentioned).
    - I don't think the playthrough reflects the sort of roles each aspect is supposed to fill within the team. Aaron did allude to it in the how-to-play section, but I want to elaborate more on that:
    Aaron (Captain Marvel) was playing the LEADERSHIP aspect, which at the time of the core set revolves around playing allies and improving them. Since we've established that allies can fill multiple functions (defense, attacking, thwarting), this is as close as it gets to a sort of 'generalist' class.
    Nikki (Black Panther) was playing the PROTECTION aspect, which (as the name implies) is mostly concerned with taking shots from the villain so no one else on the team has to. Kind of like the 'tank' character from an RPG game.
    Lincoln (Spider Man) was playing the JUSTICE aspect, which revolves around thwarting. Thwarting the main scheme so that it won't advance (and perhaps giving players the chance to draw extra cards through returning to alter ego form); and thwarting side schemes to remove their negative effects.
    Finally Dave (Iron Man) was playing the AGGRESSION aspect. As deduced by Aaron and the rest of the players, it's the damage class. Damage to the main villain, but also damage against minions that could prove a nuisance.
    I could go on, particularly with the risks and rewards of the hero and alter ego forms, but this comment is starting to get too long. I just hope that my insight is helpful to both the Game Night group and to the newer players of the game.
    MK

    This game has an incredible balancing mechanism...Klaw legitimately got tougher as the heroes became stronger, yet despite being on the razor's edge of death, you managed to survive rounds you thought you were goners. They had to have done a lot of playtesting to make sure the game was this well balanced...I was fully expecting a brutal beatdown much earlier in the game. I also thought the individual hero decks were both well themed, and distinct from the other decks. Despite my feelings that the board game market is over-saturated with Marvel games, I have to say this one at least gets a thumbs up from me.

    This game is by far the one that gets the most table time in my little group's weekly game nights, and I was so stoked to see you guys do it. It's a great game, and with resources like Hall of or the CDB, deckbuilding can almost become an obsession (sometimes, thank the universe for net decking). And, it gets the NP Seal of Approval! Thanks Nikki, Aaron, Dave, Lincoln, and all the other "guests" who make my week when the newest episode drops.

    To clarify what they said at the start "Living Card Game" isn't just a term to replace "Collectable Card Game" ... and LCG is a non-random method of distribution that Fantasy Flight uses on all of their card games except Keyforge. CCG or TCG are the acronyms for things with randomized booster packs a la Magic, Pokemon, etc.

    • @zhivik
      @zhivik 2 года назад +4

      Yep, I believe they use "Expandable Card Game" for this type of games, i.e. you purchase expansions, which have identical content for everyone. In all honesty, LCG is a very good term, but it is a trademark of Fantasy Flight, so it applies only to their games (and kudos to whoever in their marketing division who came up with the term).

    • @Cappocchi
      @Cappocchi 2 года назад +2

      @@zhivik I didn't know it was trademarked! (Smart move.) And I didn't really mean they were exactly equivalent, more that to my mind, LCG has taken over the innovative and publicity-generating space of the card game subgenre that CCGs used to solely dominate.

    • @danacoleman4007
      @danacoleman4007 Год назад +2

      Exactly! It's so annoying that people can't seem to grasp the difference. Or more likely, they don't care to. They just see that's a card game and assume the worst as far as expenditure and distribution model goes. I'm one of the people who happens to like both.

    You guys are the best! I’m all in on Marvel Champions (have everything released to date) but it was so fun to see the core set playthrough, felt like a throwback! And after over 200+ plays overall, it was still so fun to see you guys get to know the game. Sure there were a few rules mistakes, but at the end of day 1) it likely wasn’t that relevant to your success/fail and 2) put my plays (or anyones) of MC on RUclips and I’m certain I’d make a few. There’s a lot going on.
    Big props to Aaron for this great teach as well. This will help so many prospective players really know the basics in an easy to understand way.
    On the Gamegenic sponsorship, I’m all for it! I do have RUclips premium but I can’t imagine the work that goes into these and I support the extra revenue. At the end of the day this content is free and at least the ads are relevant. The token case looks really cool

    On the note in the End Discussion section relating to the Arkham Horror LCG, the new Revised Core Set now includes enough player cards to build 4 player decks out of the box! They definitely learned their lesson with Marvel Champions since I agree, the old core set was lacking in that regard, but at least new releases are fixed!

    Love that you guys are doing this game. One little clarification (and I haven’t finished the video so maybe it comes up later) - the hero and alter ego “once per turn” abilities are separate so you can do both in the same turn. When Aaron flips to hero form during his first turn he keeps that “I already used my ability” marker on there but it wasn’t really necessary…he could have used the hero ability too (not on that turn because she was at full health, but just in general).

    • @chrisb.8758
      @chrisb.8758 2 года назад +2

      One more: Lincoln could not have used the web-shooter as Peter on turn 3 when he did, because it’s a Hero Resource and he was still in alter ego.
      But in practice it wouldn’t have made any difference, you flipped to Spider-Man right after so you could have just flipped first. Just clarifying for those new to the game that it’s important to look for those “hero” or “alter ego” keywords. Loving the video so far!

    • @Cappocchi
      @Cappocchi 2 года назад +1

      @@chrisb.8758 There's a later turn (I'm not going to scrub thru 3 hours to find it!) where I definitely used Captain Marvel's and Carol's once-per-turn abilities, I think even immediately back to back after flipping the card, so we were aware of it, or figured it out eventually.

    As someone new to the game, I came across the idea of tracking damage taken rather than hitpoints remaining with the dials.

I don't know what the exact rule wording is, but in the pregame rule explanation Aaron said you can only play cards from your hand on YOUR turn, not on other players turns. Does that only apply to the "player turns" or does that apply to the villain phase as well? I was just curious if this broke the rules or if the rules do allow it in this phase.

      @@theunamiable IMO, Black Widow is one of the most fun heroes in the game. She has a unique style of play, a neat little puzzle, which if you solve correctly it somehow wins you the game without you actively working on that 😆 Justice with her is top tier, though I pair her with protection and it's a blast.

      I feel like the comparison is unfair. The complexity of champions is higher so they can make heroes and villains feel unique where legendary is more of a card system with a theme worked into it. It can't really compete with what champions can do but it sacrifices that for accessibility. It can be daunting to explain this game to new people and I dread playing it with more than 2. It is really awesome solo or 2 player though.

      I know this is a year late.
      Marvel Legendary was a huge flop for me. I played it once, and was completely bored during the whole game. The fact that they reused the same images for various cards just annoyed the heck out of me and felt lazy. (I heard they changed this with later sets).
      When I got Marvel Champions, I realized that this was exactly the game that I had hoped Marvel Legendary was. I'd give Legendary a 4/10 and Champions a 9/10

    It buffles me that Spider-man base deck, the one that the manual recomends you to build for him, is justice. He is TERRIBLE at thwarting. His only hero card that deals with threat and the like, it's spider tracer which is horrible. It has some use with claw, but even in core, there is just better options. And his basic thwart is one. So, most of the time, you are not using your hero to thwart. In fact, you will be exhausted often, because you will want to use that incredibly powerful 3 base DEF he has, meaning you will be tapped when your turn begins. On top of that, your power cares about being attacked, which is what core protection is about. Get behind me! is an incredible double down with Spider-Man's power as you get to cycle it, cancel a terrible treachery that could sink the table's momentum, give you another oportunity to use your defense stat and then you have built-in tools to avoid the damage if you are already exhausted. Because of his higher def stat and the extra draw he gets from being attacked, he's great with indomitable, which readies him after defending. You could make the case that Black Panther can play the proteaction allies, Black Widow and Luke Cage, better, because Vibranium allows him to carry 3 extra double resource cards, but then you have to take into account Spider-man's web-shooters, which generate the perfect mana to use for events during the villain's turn. Which is when you will play get behind me and Spider-man's enhanced Spider-Sense.
