Hadn't had this Southern Country Poke Sallet since I was a little girl and my grandma used to make it. When I saw it in the country I was inspired to make this old fashioned dish. One thing about poke sallet .... you can't buy it, it grows wild, it's FREE!

I was talking to my 87 year old grandmother today and she was talking about how much she loved poke salad. She grew up in the country in Hazelhurst, MS and her grandma used to make it for her. We googled it because I’ve never heard of it before, this video came up and we were able to watch it together. Thank you. ❤️

Wow! I haven’t had these since I was a kid. My dad use to go out by abandoned railroad tracks to pick them. Then my mom would clean them real good and fry them up in a skillet with eggs. They are so delicious. Thanks for sharing Meso

Hey Miso...I'm from the Carolinas, and in my area, my grandma, my mom, my aunt, and basically every woman I know cooks it in fatback grease, and use onions and scallions, and when the poke sallet is almost ready, we add a beaten egg over it and cook it.
If you pair the greens with fried chicken or pork chops, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and potato salad...you are in heaven.
As usual, you did a spectacular job!

    • @MesoMakingIt

Racel, not prepared and cooked properly it is. You don't eat the stems (any red part) and after cleaning you wash, boil, rinse, boil, rinse, boil, then a good final rinse, water should be clear. I don't know if it will actually kill you but I do know it will give you some major diarrhea if not cleaned properly. Thanks for watching and be blessed.

As a child, I ate this often at my Maternal Grandmother's home. Usually it was scrambled (fried) with eggs, but was never served at breakfast, usually at lunch or dinner (supper,) and usually accompanied with fried potatoes and crispy fried hog jowl. It also reminds me of my Grandmother's wilted lettuce. If you come from a rural/farm background, you know what wilted lettuce is. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
