I actually keep inventory sheets on the yarn I have on hand. When I order yarn and receive it I record it onto the inventory sheet. The sheet contains every piece of info (ie brand, weight, color, fiber content, yardage, number of skeins/cakes/hanks). I refer to my sheets when I get ready for the next project.
That's a great idea Louise. I have almost all of my inventory in a software called "Click Up" and even have a label / bin system for where everything is stored but I found I wasn't great at maintaining it :(
Interesting. I have about 100 totes. I sort by type of yarn also. I have the totes numbered and mapped in a notebook, and also have each tote inventoried in that notebook listing colors, number of skeins of a particular color, yarn weights and yardage. It works for me. I have current and future WIPs either boxed in a Kallax or kitted in bags. I also use Ravelr for active WIPS and completed project. Staying organized is a whole separate hobby. Well done.
That is awesome. Staying organized can be tough, especially since I like to pull out yarn and look at color combinations when planning future projects. I think the organization / yarn stash adds to the fun though!
I keep my yarn in see through buckets, and I have a notebook with dividers where I keep track of all my yarn by brands and skeins, and skein sizes. As I use up a skein/label, then I mark it off my appropriate list, and when I shop I can keep from buying more of what I already have, or I need more, I see that. It helps. Your organization looks nice~
The cubes have been really convenient. I have a mixture of ones from Ikea and Target. They are quick to assemble and you can turn them on their side depending which way you want things to go. As you saw in my bedroom, you can also stack them (I have them all anchored to the walls for safety). I choose to go with the smooth shelves instead of doing wire shelves because I wanted to make sure yarn could slide in and out nicely. If I had a bigger space I might have tried out bookshelves too. Best of luck with your move!
My yarn is sorted into clear large totes. I just sorted it all out about a month ago. In the process I put three projects together. I love Mandala cakes.
That's awesome. I love mandala cakes too I just find it easier to design with solid colors. Cakes make it so easy though to just work up a quick project without having to worry about putting colors together or changing colors.
Wow you did well. I would have gone to bed and ignored it 😂 I'm loving shopping from my stash. Gives me great satisfaction seeing it worked up. Currently, making cardigans I'm enjoying wearing ❤
Great video! I organize my yarn by type: one shelf for softee chunky, one cabinet for blanket. Then I have a tote for “weird-@$$ yarn” - basically everything that is not blanket or softee.
You've got t all going on! You got the editing, sound is great, you got the ideas, the crotchet, the wips, the FOs, you got it all baby. Now all we need from you is relaxxxx! Show us a joke or two, let's see who you are past those newbie nerves! You are doing surprisingly well if you want the truth. Way ahead of the pack already. Go you good thing! ❤❤❤
Thanks Kerri, yeah RUclips is definitely nerve wrecking. I know I'll get better as I get more practice. I also need to cut down on the "ums" I edited some out but man there are a lot! Thank you so much for the feedback and compliments!
I watched this whole thing to hear you say that your stash was overwhelming and you didn't! It must be nice to not feel restricted. My yarnstash started overwhelming me a couple of years back so I (almost) stopped buying yarn, started giving away and working through the stash and now Im down to three drawers with yarn and looking forward to buying yarn one day again - I find that my taste in color and projects and yarn types change through the years and it felt wrong that I had a lot of money in yarn that I didn't like that much anymore just lying around :) Thanks for the video and greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark
Oh no, it absolutely makes me happy, I don't feel overwhelmed at all. I do feel like after organizing I have a lot more of some colors than I could ever need but I see that as a challenge now to figure out how to use it up! Thank you for watching!
I buy Caron simply soft in all varieties(except o go’s) It’s my #1 go to yarn. My second is paint box Aran acrylic. Any thing else was gifted or given away to me, and I’m trying to use it up or will be passing it on. Your organization is inspiring. You will benefit from your hard work for quite awhile. 😊
I have to store my yarn in plastic tubs and have found that if I have the hanks/skeins upright (setting on the short ends) I can easily see what I have and how much, but more importantly I can squeeze more in. I saw your cedar balls in some of your bins…I also toss in lavender and/or cedar pouches to keep out insects and to smell nice, but you might want to also toss in some desiccant packs (those little packs you find in with new items, like shoes) to help keep moisture out of any closed tubs or drawers.
Yeah the cedar balls were a just in case. Thanks for the idea about the desiccant packs. Almost all of my storage is open but that is a great idea for my last drawer and the Pound of Love tub!
You did a great job. It will be nice for to grab skeins you need and go. This is a fun video to watch. You hace a place for crochet hooks and notions. I have part of my stash in a hallway closet in milk crates. The rest in clear vacuum bags in behind the couch and end tables. Upstairs in spare bedroom I keep dish rag cotton, doily cotton, sock yarn, and some frilly scarf.
You did a great job and you will see better what you have and what to use for each project. It is tough when you don't have lots of room but you made it work! I think everyone struggles with keeping yarn organized because it is always changing. Hugs
Thank you Leslie. Yeah it's hard but I am hoping now that I have it sorted this organization method should last me for at least a couple of months before I need to reorganize. I don't like when the shelves start looking empty so I'll sometimes reorganize at that point to fill them in.
I use a glass front book case for my yarn... I don't have the amount you do, but I love seeing what I have and it's pretty and makes me happy... when it's clean, which it's not right now. Decided to 'destash' by starting projects...
That's awesome, I love the way some of those book cases can look when filled with yarn. "Destashing" is always fun. At least for me, I know once it's done I get to buy new yarn!
This is Jill and I think you did a great job getting everything organized! You’ve got quite a stach there! I have a small stach. I have a drawer just for cottons, one for balled up left over yarn, one for partially used skeins. Then I have a cabinet categorized according to brand. I have another 3 drawer stand with crochet supplies and books in it. I’m so much in the mood to yarn shop. I’m pretty much a handicapped shut in . So yarn shopping for me is pretty well out of reach. I depend on others to do it for me. I do miss touching, smelling and picking out the variety and colors I want. Anyway, you did a great job and I enjoyed watching! ( I love your cute appartment!)
Thanks Jill, I am with you on being able to touch the yarn when shopping however, I really am looking forward to ordering more yarn from online retailers. They offer so many more options and colors than what I can get locally and you can't beat front door delivery! Thank you for watching!
I am redoing the craft room that was shared and is now mine. I am emptying the spare bedroom, the storage cubes in the living room and a TomCare storage unit in the living room near my chair. I would rather watch you...........
I usually use wool or wool blends, just because I like the way they feel. I have sweater quantities of TruBoo and CoBoo for some summer tanks. I have lots of independent dyer yarns I've been accumulating for 15+ years. I buy much faster than I knit. I currently have them in 18 gallon totes - three for fingering weight, one for worsted, and one for various. There are a few Mandala cakes, but I don't use a lot of it. Then I also have a separate tote of Ohio State colors and one of Christmas yarns. Unfortunately, I've not done a good job of putting away yarn in the last few months, due to health issues. Then they just seem to multiply when I'm not looking. Last Christmas doing living room cleaning, I found about 20 WIPs I had stashed here and there. Now I am working my way through those WIPs.
I haven't tried wool or bamboo yet. I do want to try them eventually though. When I'm in a creative mode my yarn stash tends to get all over the place. I'll grab a scrap cake and a hook and even work at my computer desk figuring out new stitches and patterns.
@@craftinginthenight I heard that!! I always have a project in my work desk and in my car. I recently had surgery and ended up with an overnight stay. I finished a hat on the hospital. Oh, and I got my Truboo and Coboo on sale. I had a gift card. Two sweater quantities for $4 out of pocket!

Oh yeah definitely. I had emergency gallbladder surgery with complications so I definitely understand where you are coming from. Take time to recover. You can totally get it finished Stephanie. This was kind of a big project all at once and took about 3 - 3.5 hours total but in general I try to set a 20 minute timer every day to work on cleaning around the house, which includes cleaning up any yarn piles I've left out from working on WIP's or making videos. It's only two of us so it's not too bad but man 20 minutes day really helps getting things going. Thank you for watching!

Do you make it a point to do it once a year? I'm in the process of organizing my bedroom/studio. I hope you have a great day! Ciao.
I just organize it when I feel like it isn't serving me as well as it could. Usually that's a couple of times a year, it just depends how much stash I'm using up or bringing in.

Hi. I saw your comment on where the cubes came from, but where did you get the slide-in baskets? Both white and pink ones. My cat has shredded my wicker ones. Nice job organizing and videoing! Thank you.
I did weight (really brand / weight) coordination and then further by color in each section. So, for example, all of my Caron Simply Soft is together and then grouped by color. Likewise all my compatible 4 weights are together and then grouped by color. So far this seems to be working but I'll know for sure over the coming weeks. Love to hear what others do as well! Thank you for watching!
Right now I'm just trying to stay out of the yarn stores till I clear up some space :D It seems every time I go in a store there is some new color I haven't seen or an awesome sale. Thanks for watching!

Hi. I saw your comment on where the cubes came from, but where did you get the slide-in baskets? Both white and pink ones. My cat has shredded my wicker ones. Nice job organizing and videoing! Thank you.
The baskets came from Target, both the solid ones and the metal ones.
@@craftinginthenight Thank you.
My yarn room/areas are a HOT mess due to my son and grandson moving in for a while.
Mine needs to be reorganized again! I should film another video on it 😜
Colour co-ordination or yarn weight co-ordination?? I go with yarn weight but the colours look so nice. What does everyone else do?
I did weight (really brand / weight) coordination and then further by color in each section. So, for example, all of my Caron Simply Soft is together and then grouped by color. Likewise all my compatible 4 weights are together and then grouped by color. So far this seems to be working but I'll know for sure over the coming weeks. Love to hear what others do as well! Thank you for watching!
I do by color then weight. Since I only use 2-3 brands of yarn that cover my needed color choices I don't yet need anything more complex.
Where did you get the bags from?
Hi Gail, thanks for watching. For the project bags, I use these ones from Amazon in the B5 size: amzn.to/3NW9ImK (affiliate link)
@@craftinginthenight Thanks I ordered them they look better then just bags.
My stash has gotten so big that this year I have to use 5 ounces to purchase 1 ounce of new
Right now I'm just trying to stay out of the yarn stores till I clear up some space :D It seems every time I go in a store there is some new color I haven't seen or an awesome sale. Thanks for watching!
Good ratio 1:5 !!
