Bernstein 001 oh no too late. I made sure it is well compact. I would have hired a vibrating plate if I was doing a drive way. There hasn’t been any movement with the tiles so far.
It has been in place now for 2 years with no cracking or movement or sinking. I would have used a wacker plate if I was doing this on a driveway but as it was just for a patio it is all okay and has stood the test of time.
@@AngusMcGregor I watched it because I have a similar job to do and very little experience. I'm laying type1 about an inch at a time and hand tamping before getting a whacker plate. This helps remove any voids and gets the best out of type 1. If you do this it sets like cement. That's what type 1 is designed for. If you dont do that it will settle over time, if water gets in it will start to move. You wont notice it for years. The grout will start to crack first Either way it's a small proceedure that makes a much better job so I can't see any reason not to. Its like people not waterproofing showers and saying they've never had a leak - they have it just takes a while to notice.
@@Ess666 yes I think it is your choice however you shouldn’t need to tamper as well as use a whacker. I chose not to based on research and chatting to landscapers and builders and from previous jobs I have done. I also wanted to keep the budget down to keep this financially viable as I may as well have paid someone else to do it. But then I wouldn’t of been able to do a video about it! As mentioned there has been no cracking of the grout in this one. Check out my landscaping update video.
Looks good! Cannot wait to see the finished product. You have been accomplishing a lot of work during the lockdown.
Another great video Angus👍 loving the how-to videos.
I would strongly advise you to hire a wacker and compact that type 1

Angus McGregor good luck, even with pedestrian traffic type 1 should be compacted at 50 mm increments.
@@cleethorphesdave852 If there is no traffic (such as laying edging stones) would you still use a wacker?
@@jamiebond6349 yes always compact substrate even for pedestrian traffic.
Brilliant Video thank you
Great vid, what was the size of this area please?
The area I had to re-landscape with the slate and the decking is around 6 m x 4 m Not including the grass area and I had to level
@@AngusMcGregor thank you, trying to gauge roughly how much type 1 I will need for my 3.2m x 1.7m base.
@@Shrekeo if you google volume calculator you should be able to determine how much you need.
you really should have used a hand tamper at least, on every inch or so of sub base laid and wet the type one while you laid it.
That will sink
