A Rant On PSA's "Grader Notes" Announcement... They MUST Do Better!!

  • PSA has been talking about "grader notes" for over a year. Finally, they roll out their grader notes in a video announcement from the President of PSA. In my opinion, it's an epic fail. They are not protecting the future buyers and they continue to take one step forward before two steps back. I believe it's important to continue to hold PSA accountable and hold their feet to the fire, to ensure they make improvements. With their parent company now owning SGC, the only way they're going to improve, is if the collecting community demands it.

They do what they want. They have 90% of the grading market. They don't have to do anything. Anything they give to their customers, they are giving on their own terms. They care about money, not their customers, and they show us that almost every day. Name a company that has 90% percent of a market and provides amazing services to their customers.

The loudest voice, in my opinion, is to not submit anymore cards to them. They are tripling down on stupid and anyone who thinks PSA is "The Gold Standard" needs to read the policies and guarantees of PSA. I have seen and heard too much about them and from them to trust them and their "trained eye." They were possibly good at some point in the past, but have proven themselves to be quite inept. They haven't proven anything regarding their accusations that "card cleaning" reverses itself while in their slabs nor that they can detect it without watching a video of someone doing it. They have declared themselves to be the best and way too many people just believe them. There is ZERO evidence to prove their claims. Stop using them and they will have to actually fix their problems in order to try and regain trust in the hobby.

And how often are the trainers retrained? What is the frequency and type of testing or certification? How about quality control. Who is verifying the trained eye is not having a bad day (dry eyes?, hangover?) or maybe they have forgotten their training (perishable skills) In my opinion grading is not enlightening... it is supposed to be an impartial science(ish) process (thus the training to a standard) and I want to also see the exact process. What about the tools used? Lighting? Magnification? Table color? Is that a smudge on my card or a dead fly on the magnifying loop? How do they handle and store cards prior to grading? I agree that this PSA public service announcement (PSA's PSA?) lacks substance and raises more questions about it. It makes me wonder what they are hiding....

Thank you for bringing this information to our community. It makes perfect sense why PSA doesn't want to share grader notes. "Hiding" grader notes from the public reflects PSA's attempt to downplay the actual subjectivity involved in the grading process. Once people start comparing notes and grades the grading inconsistencies will be documented. Ultimately this will push the grading industry into using more AI. Hey Graig it sounds like PSA is doing a low rent reaction video with grader's notes implementation lacking foresight as well as expending research & development as a typical so-called grader is usually barely 20 years old if that and I've heard through the grapevine the get one minute each to grade every card assigned to them. Having to break down grader's notes slows down the grading process and also the notes in of themselves is suspect by allowing only the grader to see it. There really needs to be some independent accountability such as ushering in PSA and other graders into the ISO audit process that's used for other companies that want to be a player on the world's stage as being credible and with tight standards mandatory to do business with other ISO certified companies. This is the best I can come up with short of government oversight for the hobby in general.

AND 2 cards that look identical and one is a 9 and one is a 10, human element is involved. If somebody is pissed off that day, the card holder isn't gonna get a 10. There a lot of so called "experts" or "professionals" out there. P.S. No wonder it's expensive as hell in California but that's a different argument.

I have to disagree with your frustration on the policy.
If we take a step back. Notes are something that submitters have been clamoring for. Every reveal video you’ve ever seen has a card or several where the host is lamenting a grade wondering where it went wrong. Now they’ll have an answer.
As someone buying after the fact, the grade is the grade and I can actually look at the card and decide if I want it or not. At that point it is less important.
As far as the publicity policy on the notes. It is because no subjective process, even with objective criteria can stand up to that scrutiny. You would have entire channels comparing two similar cards with different notes and things of that nature. It’s pretty simple to understand where they are coming from.
In short, it is something extra at no extra cost that we didn’t have before.

Grader notes are a horrible idea, and will ultimately increase the consumers’ grading costs. Maintaining notes and publishing them takes time and resources. PSA is not going to internalize these added expenses, which would reduce profit margins. PSA will eventually pass these expenses along to the consumer. PSA will likely increase grading fees, and even find a way to expand profit margins with the new grading notes service. Yes, there are always a few head scratcher grades, but most grades are close to what the submitter estimated. Be careful for what you ask for. Increasing grading fees to tell me why my card received a 4, when I predicted a 4.5, is not worth the eventual added expense.
