    My camera bodies are the Canon 1D Mk IV, which has the 1.3x crop factor. My 300/2.8 therefore becomes a 390/2.8 effectively. My 400/2.8 L IS II is an effective 520/2.8 and is my least used lens, along with my 14mm f2.8 II wideangle. If you're on a budget and want fast pro glass, opt for 2nd-hand gear that is _not_ the most current model in the range. You can get an old Canon 400/2.8 L-Series lens (the one without IS) for $1000.

    Peter, congratulations on the channel. Great to see you last week @ Avaya. I would like to know more about focusing settings, backfocus, and AF micro-adjustment focus adjustments. Metering, breakdown matrix, partial, center weighting and spot. YES, I have read the manual, but applied to the sports photog setup. Many thanks.

      @peterrm11 5 лет назад +2

      I usually use Case 4, 4 spots or 9 spots almost always in the center. Center weighted metering. I never micro-adjust. It just seems like asking for trouble. If I have trouble with focus on a lens camera combo-I send it to Canon Service.

    Peter , this is very relevant for me. I’ll subscribe! Thank you! You asked for
    Questions, and I appreciate how busy you are, so here goes:
    I just began to shoot just HS lacrosse, usually from the sidelines. I print 16x20+ occasionally.
    1) What’s your view on the slowdown in AF using the Canon 2X iii? (I read Canon says they slow it by 75%!)
    2) can you suggest a great rig for that under $5k?
    I have the following lenses: 100-400 IS i, 70-200 IS ii , 2x iii. Should I upgrade any ? Picked them up at good price 2nd hand and happy to sell any for a replacement that will best suit.
    3) I Have a 5DIV and considering an R6 FF or R7 crop, as I’ve begun to also shoot some video and appreciate new video specs.
    Would you suggest modern mirrorless FF or a crop for HS sports outdoors? Thank you very much, and happy to patreon you if you accept that!

    Hello Mr. Miller. I use the Canon 90d, with the Canon 100-400 5.6 ii Lens. I have not done much of sports shooting, but love air shows etc. I notice in this video and several others i have viewed, that you mention the 1.4 extender. When I bought my 1.4 extender, I was advised to shoot in manual mode with the extender. Most videos mention the 1.4 or maybe even the 2x extender, but no information how best to use them. I shoot in AV mode. I am confused on how to properly use the extender, in A/F on lens, and i am not that fast on getting the focus for the shot. Is It best to not use the extender or what information can you share on using the 1.4 extender.

    This is a great channel -- and Peter's work is clearly the best of the best ... I''m always interested in what the pros shoot but also cognizant of the fact that anyone who shoots for SI or the like is generally shooting in pro venue/pro lighting situations. And for those conditions, BINGO. That a great setup. I can't imagine buying an f4 with and extender than makes it an f5.6 for shooting at ill-it high schools over a 400 f2/8 which is in the same price range. Pretty sure I'd be packing it in on most night HS and D2/D3 college games after the first quarter during September and staying home thereafter. Curious what others think. Am I missing something?

    • @peterrm11
      @peterrm11 5 лет назад +3

      Even with the great low light capabilities of today's cameras F5.6 doesn't cut it even in a better lit venue

    • @MikeQuintero_
      @MikeQuintero_ 5 лет назад +2

      Nah, you're spot on. 300mm & 400mm f/2.8 for those HS/small college venues for the most part. Unless you've got a high ISO beast, the f/4 will stay home after September for HSFB. But, can come back out for HS Soccer/Track/Baseball & Softball.

      When I shoot Wisconsin Badger football games at Camp Randall, I have used the 200-400 f/4 with the 1DX MK II and found that though the ISO is high, the photos still come out pretty darn good, but not great. At those times, I long for the 400 f/2.8 even though it is a D1 school. I usually end up trying to get closer and use my 300 F/2.8 after half time. But for all other sports in daylight (Polo, Equestrian, Soccer, Golf, Baseball, etc.) the 200-400 F/4-5.6 is incredibly versatile and as sharp as it gets. I do not regret that purchase for an instant.

      The 7D2 does better in low light. The 90D is a great body, but sports isn’t it’s market. For the price of a 90D, you could probably fine a gently used 1Dx which is light years better.

      You would be pleasantly surprised at how cheap an AF-S 300mm 2.8D ED-IF is used these days, about $1200! It's built like a tank and it's extremely fast and sharp and takes amazing images. I started out with one these way back in 2001 when they $5500 and I remember what a great lens it was. You should find a way to buy one, instead of buying a new camera always buy new glass. I now use the newest 400mm 2.8 FL VR, but the truth is that old 300mm 2.8 is almost as good and especially in good lighting.

    Hi! I have a canon 70-200 f4 zoom lens, I am not sure if it is enough for sports shooting, should I get a 1.4x converter?

    • @cbrusharmy
      @cbrusharmy 5 лет назад +2

      It'll be an f/5.6 if you do, so a little slower to gather light, and it won't let you jack that shutter speed up as much. Should be fine in the outdoors during peak daylight. As a rule, it's never a bad thing to have a 1.4x teleconverter in your kit. You can always increase the ISO and fix noise, but not so motion blur from too slow a shutter speed.

    Hi Peter - I have just one question! I've been shooting my first 'pro' Premiership rugby season on a 7Dii with a 300mm 2.8 L IS. I find that nearly every pic I take benefits from reduced highlights and increased shadows in post. But the 'important' jpegs have to go in a matter of minutes to my agent and so I would like to set up my body to do this. I have tried using different Picture Styles, but I just can't seem to find the result I want. Another tog said "try Nikon" for better dynamic range but I've invested in Canon , so that's not an option. Do you have any in-camera setup suggestions?

    • @MikeQuintero_
      @MikeQuintero_ 5 лет назад

      As long as your shutter speed is 800 and up, you really won't need the IS. I use an older Sigma 300mm f/2.8 with no stabilization, at 1000 ss and up, and can still get crispy photos.

    6D Mark II + 70-200mm f4 IS? I can spend the money on the 2.8 but am soooo drawn to the smaller size of the f4. It is that limiting for indoor high school basketball??

    • @henryfair3302

      hey, I'm not peter reed but i am a professional sports photojournalist for my local paper, so i thought I'd give you my 2 cents(if this is even still relevant to you). The f4 70-200 will be really limiting for how high you'll be able to push your shutter and how low you can keep your iso, i can see the appeal for the smaller size and lower price; but shooting in HS gyms the lighting is almost always far from good. those couple extra stops of light will make all the difference.

    Having read your book and heard you interviewed on Kelby podcasts it is great to be able to now see your videos on RUclips. As a parent who loves taking images of the kids sports (principally rowing, cross country, swimming, tennis, basketball, cricket) I particularly enjoyed this one. I shoot with Canon 5D 111 and have recently picked up the 100 - 400 which has added so much to my capabilities I don't know why it took me so long to get one. I am about to buy the 70 - 200 2.8 to replace the f4 I have used forever and am thinking of getting the 1.4 converter as well. A question - whilst adding extra reach I have also heard that a converter slows down the focussing capability of a lens. You obviously use one - does it have any negative impact on your shooting or is it a no brainer for me to grab one? Looking forward to you response - and many future videos. Best regards, Peter

    • @JMHSPhoto
      @JMHSPhoto 6 лет назад +2

      Hey Peter, I'm clearly not P.R.M answering here, but I will give you my take on this for what it's worth.
      Anytime you use a tele, depending on the multiplication factor involved, you are going to loose f/stops and fraction of some speed. When you look at a 1.4x tele, it's one stop ( so your f/4 - 5.6 on the long end) will effectively become a f/5.6 - 8.0. Herein lies the issue. And going up to 2.0x, you loose 2 full stops! Some bodies don't do well with focusing near f.8 end of the spectrum. So you can anticipate some hunting for a focus lock in those high f/stops (using a tele) on those variable aperture optics.
      There is a huge difference in a fixed aperture lens (eg fixed f/2.8) and the variable /f4-5.6 pieces of glass. Not only are you really limited when trying to do the inside sports because of ISO+Required Shutter+ISO results, but adding that tele will ruin your day. Limiting you to what and where you'll get usable images.
      Bodies come and go! The glass is going to last you as long as you take care of your kit and stay with a brand. So the very last place you want to skimp is on the optics end. It holds it's resale value better also. So dive into fixed lens models and try and limit that f/4-5/6 stuff. You'll be adding more shooting options to your outings, and, It's just an easier/cost effective/better results way to go. Just my 2cents.

    • @PeterWade
      @PeterWade 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your comments, John. I am aware of the sort of limitations such a strategy might present but I guess the question I posed was more related to the 70 - 200 2.8 rather than the 100 - 400. With that lens a 1.4 extender almost gets me a 300 f4 - which in some of the sports I shoot is more than enough zoom - and offers a wider aperture at that point than the 100 - 400 (f 5.0) so it appears to be an excellent alternative. My concern is whether, by adding the extender, the speed of locking onto the target is degraded to such an extent that it makes less sense to go down that path. Any thoughts on that? All the best, Peter

    • @PeterReadMiller
      @PeterReadMiller  6 лет назад +1

      Peter-yes the extender does slow down the AF to an extent. I usually don't notice it and I think the trade off for more focal length is definitely worth it.

      I'm a fan of the 1.4X converter, not so much of the 2X. With the 1.4X you of course lose a stop of light, but you also lose some AF speed maybe 25%

      Use AI Servo as a focus mode, single point focus (center one), use burst mode (high continuous shooting), and make sure your shutter speed is at least 1/1000. Also, use the lowest aperture you can with your lens, and given you said it's the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens, that will vary. At 250mm it will be 5.6. Your ISO will have to compensate for the rest.

    • @MLeeMedia
      @MLeeMedia 5 лет назад

      You're talking about two different things. The aperture (2.8 in this case) will help you in low light situations, as the lens lets a lot more light, which means you can have a faster shutter speed/lower ISO. If range is your only concern, then you'll want something longer than 250mm. 300mm, 400mm, etc. It really depends on what you're shooting, in what conditions (light especially) and above all, your budget ;) Good luck!

    Estou a pensar em comprar uma substituta para a minha G7
    O meu interesse é filmar a família principalmente os mais pequenos que jogam futebol e basquetebol
    Creio que a focagem tem de ser MUITO rápida, e em ginásios a luz é muito reduzida pelo que à sensibilidade à luz +e IMPORTANTE
    Não vale a pena estar bem focada se a foto for muito escura, nem vale a pena a foto ter luz e não estar focada
    Desta vez pensei numa A7 III, A7 IV ou uma A7s apesar do preço
    Também me falaram na Lumix da gama S

      As well as having Canon f2.8 70-200 and 24-70 lenses, I also use Tamron lenses. They are half the price and match the performance. The Tamron Di VC 24-70mm is a great lens

      That depends on what you have already, and how much you're willing to spend :) Can you be more specific?

    No, it's NOT a triangle. It's three interlinked factors, but it has nothing to do with a triangle. Don't know why so many people use this analogy, as it's pointless.
