- In this episode, Couz evaluates WVU football’s transfer portal class for 2025. He looks at Rivals, 247 Sports and On3 rankings and breaks those down.
At the end of the day, did Coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff at WVU do a good job in the transfer portal? Couz will try and answer that question in the show. I love Rich and I am thankful he has come back home,but according to your numbers it would be fair to say up to this point this transfer portal class leaves a lot to be desired.Hopefully he can load up after the spring portal finishes up.
Once he starts winning the Portal will get better for WV. Cruz still having Neal Brown withdrawal.
We are talking about computer nerds that have never played the game and probably could not throw a football 10 yards!!! I trust in Rich Rod.
I don't know what to think about any of this yet. I'm giving RichRod the benefit of the doubt. I wish him the best, and hope for his success. His interview with Pat shed some light on what happened in the past. Pastilong sucked!

There have been a lot of great players come out of small schools. I really believe in RR. I think he knows talent and he knows how to coach players to bring out their best. Unlike our previous coaching staff they could have 5 stars throughout the team and might win 8 games. Do I think we’ll win the big 12 in year one no but I have no doubt WVU will be playing for a big 12 title in a couple of years.

The only problem that I see is that every guy that left ended up going to bigger schools, and most of the guys that we got in are from smaller schools. Hope it all pans out.
That’s why the On3 rankings likely are what they are. Time will tell how good this portal class is.

I think if we go 8 and 4 our first year we will be doing great next year is the year I'm really looking at that way it gives everyone time to get together as a team and all the coaches will be used to each other let's go mountaineers
8 wins not good enough in the B12. Bobbie Moe on the schedule and Ohio U with TX and OK gone 9-10 win season. B12 Championship by year 3 in the new RR era.
I was expecting this recruiting class to be really mediocre or below average, which it is. However I wasn't expecting us to lose so much essential talent that we had on both sides of the ball. I do see hope tho especially because of how good the coaching staff hires were by RR.
I agree, it’s a crap shoot on transfers. Out of 30 you hope 5 are great. 10 are better than predicted. And 15 can be solid enough to be backups or start with competency.
I trust the coaches more than I trust the rankings. That being said I agree some of the guys may not work out but also some of them are likely developmental/ depth players to start. Its also a different system so if they use guys where they excel their play will be much better than what the numbers say.
Well rich has always done more with less. And I’m gonna trust the players they’re bringing in will fit what we need. Do the stars matter maybe somewhat but we’ve had some good players and not produced and other players being walk on’s. Make there way to starting line up.
Im not allowing myself to have thoughts of a 10-12 win season. Cant do it. I expect 8, with us beating a couple ranked teams or teams projected at the top of the B12. Any loss, I expect to be contested to the end (see "not that" last year) Beat Pitt, WIN the home games! So, noncon 3-0, B12, 5-4. First year 8-4. Bowl game? Who cares anymore? Cause you dont know what guys will play or opt out. Making that playoff is where its at now, lets get there!

Steve Slaton was a 3 star. Its all about the coaches evaluating talent. Rich Rod has a history of finding diamonds in the rough. Im gonna trust him and his staff over these computer programs

How highly were the players ranked that we had the last time Rich was here when we were beating everyone down? I think we will see some more good pickups in the spring.
We will have more higher ranked players in the spring. IMO
Maybe I trust the climb more than I should. But i trust this coaching staff. I didn’t expect to get a “highly rated” portal class at the beginning.
I trust RR but I trust Wren Baker even more. I believe we are saving our big dollar offers for when there are better portal recruits, and to throw it at the higher HS recruits
We didn’t get Hugh recruit, but high recruits mean nothing if they aren’t exceptionally fast. With RRs offense and we got the speed coming!
@@ScottyRosencrance-dq4pj The rankings dont always matter if they are using a players strengths they will play much better than they have other places where they were forced to play in a way that didn't suit there skills or style of play. The ranking are only really set by who was recruiting you so its really meaningless for the most part.
Anymore, I stay out of watching recruits and transfers so much. I just want Dawgs. I want those tough boys back. Let's Go Mountaineers!!!
That isn’t something that stats, resumes and past colleges can tell. Most of these portal guys will not work out but a few will. TRANSFERS usually do not help a good program that much. It helps teams that play a weak schedule to get a few wins but no championships.
Not only are they not all going to be studs, but they had to bring in a bunch of guys. Some of them are just depth pieces that they really need.
Everyone talks about the lower tier players you can find good players in FBS schools there are several that have gold jackets. I'll wait to see what the team looks like at the end of spring.

I would go with an average of the three rankings and that is probably a little more accurate. But as far as I’m concerned I don’t pay any attention to rankings whether it’s ranking teams or players. Rankings are far from accurate. The only way you can tell how talented a team or a player is by their play on the field. You just have to trust that WVU’s coaching staff is good at evaluating the talent level of players. So I don’t get too excited about new players until I see them perform. At this time I am optimistically cautious that the coaching staff knows what they are doing and we will have a solid team next season.
Hey Couz, many of the fans who are bringing down Rod are probably young. Look at the offensive lineman we must replace and who Rod got to come to Morgantown. I also like the players we brought in for the defense, and you know how I felt about the past defense.

Many of those are Neal Brown fans and JIMBO people. When RR starts winning they will claim they been with RR all along.
I think we brought a lot of good prospects I think we will be able to replace a good bit of lost talent
Some of the needs have been well-targeted, with the exception of center. Don't know the plan there, maybe moving a current player. Right now, it looks like RR has gone for a small number of high quality guys very likely to contribute/start and a lot of "potentials." They're taking a flyer on quite a few guys with a history of injury issues who were good when healthy but don't have a lot of playing experience to show it. Those may come through, may not but probably not a lot of resources being put into getting them here, keeping risk low.
Corners and safeties are a bit overstocked and maybe one QB extra. Suspect that a lot are being brought in, and many will get weeded out in the Spring portal...and more brought in. That would be the modern variation of how RR recruiting at WVU last time around.

I definitely don’t think that, but it’s fair. My expectations for year one is 6-6 or 7-5.

Mediocre days has been fired by WVU. Have to go to the good level then the elite level. Expectations of 6-7 wins is what happens when mediocre is the goal. WVU is past those days.
So the reason we can't evaluate players being brought in is because they may not have fit the style of play where they were. Coach Rodriguez may see just enough on certain plays to say he does good on what we need him to do. Also, they have several months to be working out in our weight room under our staff. When you are the age of these players it's not unrealistic for them to grow physically and be even better than what they were last season. Look where Josh Allen came from; Wyoming. Jerry Rice; Mississippi Valley St. Brett Farve; So. Miss. Get my drift? Gems in the rough. Talent is in the eye of the beholder

People quit reading into all the lower lvl recruits. You can't say that because people can come in and surprise you I trust Rich Rods seeing talent quit listening to all the nay sayers. They don't want us feeling good about our transfers. Here is what I want to say to them they don't want to admit how good of a coach he is.Finding talent look at Pat White never been beat in a Bowl and he played in 4 Bowls, 1st was the Sugar Bowl as a freshman, second was Gator Bowl, then Fiesta Bowl and then North Carolina Bowl don't remember what that Bowl's name was the name has changed. You can add Steve Slaton to the the 1st 2 Bowls he got hurt in the Fiesta Bowl and Noel Devine took over. Couz look they all know what he expects of them a lot of these recruits are underrated also you don't think this is going to put a chip on there shoulder your mistaken this is to the haters. So quit talking 💩 about us you don't like what Rich Rod is doing your very welcome to support another team. Sorry don't have time for this crap.
I think it's a good class but only time will tell. We never get 4 or 5 star guy so to me it's fill positions of need and get serviceable players and coach them up.

Some will be hits and some will not be. There will most likely be surprises, good and bad (us old guys will remember the “phenomenal” Gualtney). I think we will be okay for the coming season but (most likely) we will not be great. I just hope we show out well enough to attract more talented players like CHjr. Great quarterback play might just persuade him to flip to WVU,🤞🏻
