Most engines that have rods sharing a journal have a chamfer on one side of the big end of the rod. One side is flat. The flat sides go together ...the chamfer faces out. It's to clear the radius. Most SBC rods are installed with the bearing tang facing out.

Not if the journals are perfect. I also polish my own if it’s not too bad. I mic’ed every journal and they were fine.
