How to make a Wedding Ring Box - Pirate's Treasure Chest

  • This Pirate's Treasure Chest Ring Box was so much fun to make and one of my favorite projects. This was the first video I ever filmed, but I just now got around to finishing the edit. I didn't have any idea how I was going to accomplish anything in the design, but just experimented and tried things until I found ways to make it work. The bride and groom were thrilled with this homemade keepsake and I hope it lasts them for years.
I've loved building things from a young age and I believe anyone can get out to the shop and make things. I want to inspire people to go out there and learn something new, to experience the thrill of taking a project from the moment of inspiration to a finished piece. Also, my wife has a very long honey-do list for me and I might as well make videos doing it.

Wow! What a special gift for your brother and his bride! So much time, care, and craftsmanship went into the treasure chest...but most of all, a lotta love! I liked the processes you used to "age" the brass and to make the chest look weathered, very clever. Such a perfectly crafted project down to the tiniest detail...definitely something your brother and sister-in-law will "treasure" forever! :-)

HA! I see what you did there. They actually sent a photo of him with the box at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyworld, where they went on their honeymoon. And thank you, it was a fun project to do, but very time consuming!

Those small chests would also work in a role playing game where the players do a good amount of dungeon crawling and such. Might be able to make a little cash from them if you found some of those groups in your area because the group might need several of them at a given time. That is what I like about them.

They would be easier to make as an actual box rather than the ring box too, what a great idea!

Thank you Rich! This was the first video I ever shot, but not the first one I posted, so it was an interesting process, no only learning how to make the thing, but to figure out how to shoot making the thing.

My favorite scene of the whole video is at 12:25. I missed the Kubbi music. ha ha. I really like how you accomplished an aged look on the wood and brass. Cool techniques! What did your friend think?

Bruce A. Ulrich when I shot video last year, I hadn't picked out music for the channel yet, but knew I would do pirate themed music for this. That's actually one of the reasons it took so long was tracking down music! They loved the box and just wrote me to tell me they still use it every day.
