    I knew that you have issues around money but to pass that charge on to your customer is plain wrong.
    Your issue is your issue and what you did is pass it on to an innocent customer who presumably thought you were going to treat him well.
    Any mess ups that PP have caused me have been resolved and compensated after speaking to the right person.

      Every business passes costs on to customers in one form or another. None absorb costs. They don't tell customers of these charges but they are passed on. I remember taking my old car into a shop to get a water pump replaced. There was a special wrench needed I did not have and besides I hate working in cars. Shop told me 250 to change pump and belt. I said "don't change belt I can do that myself" as he quoted 85.00 for a belt my buddy that worked for Goodyear could get me for 20. When I picked up my car it was 250 even though he didn't change the belt. Another time, different shop different car went in to have half shaft replaced. Shop added delivery charge to for parts delivery even though auto parts store does not charge for delivery. That added 30 to the repair. Phantom parts, shop charges, delivery charges they don't pay for, they get passed on. I suppose when someone sends me something for repair and they say send it fed ex and fed ex charges 50.00 in broker and taxes I should eat that too? Last year I had 3 items shipped up from the states where the sender declared a high value on a broken piece. One caused 103.00 in taxes at the border, the second 55.00 in charges and the 3rd 45.00. in all 3 cases these charges were passed on as they were told to ship by USPS and they shipped fed ex or UPS and these carriers add redecules broker fees as things cross the border.
      You might not like it, but that is the way it works. On this mixer by the way, I made nothing. Zero dollars. What the customer was charged was exactly what my costs were, no mark up on the parts. In the end negotiating with the bank I was able to get them to reduce the initial charges after threatening to move my business and talking to the right person. About an hour on the phone I got to the right person that said "If I had a dollar for every time I had to deal with something PayPal does.". He said that many people get dinged because PayPal does a bank account check where they withdraw something like 1.00 and then put it back to validate the account and some people open a seperate account to "deposit only" funds they receive like me. When PayPal does this account verification withdrawal and then put money back it triggers an over draft charge and has people frothing at the mouth.

    Ebay, Pay Pal and Amazon all do the same thing. I don't usually use Amazon but I did recently and I din't get a refund but a credit to my Amazon account.
    I brought a can of DeoxIT 5 and din't understand why I din't pay the full price and it was because Amazon had held the money.

    Really bad luck with the replacement amplifiers =/ I did just check my stock of STK chips (of same package type) but I don't have that model, I think mine are all used in monitors and are regulators.

    it is a thick film hybrid integrated circuit, you can always open it and repair the stk chip itself by replacing transistor at fault, there is only 10 of them if it is stk022. It was done before and will be done. Well with stk015 and polish complementary part gml026 at least

      Yes I know what is inside. I have opened them before. As far as repairing a hybrid module, sure it could be done, but why? The only reason I could ever see trying to attempt this is if you have a one of a kind very rare piece, and a replacement part was not available.

    • @kokodin5895
      @kokodin5895 8 лет назад

      I know it might be mdness, or simply put non economicaly practical. but if not for any other reason, it would make for an interesting video, and you already have like 3 of those chips lying around as junk. One of them just might be repairable by replacing one drive transistor by any general purpose one. The thing is, if everyone would to throw out blown hybrids , scenario with rare chips just might become a reality.
      As i pointed out before in Poland where i live, there was entire craft of repairing import chips, or even domestic ones, in the 80's. And that was because we simply, as a nation of soviet influence, could not buy replacements, therefore polish hybrids were a little bit more serviceable than most of amplifier chips. Some of diy fixes were even adapted in later iterations of our hybrids by their manufacturer.
      The other reason for doing if, would be to prove Dave Jones from eevblog, that not all chips are scrap if the magic smoke escapes and you can put some of that smoke back. :]
      But i belive there is no video like that as of yet on youtube, and it would be an educational one for many . Not another how to swap ic video, but true repair one.
      As you pointed out, this repair might not be economical anyway. And if you get another brick chip from ebay you might consider that option just to be sure what you put into this amp. Take it as a fun project not as a chore, you don't have to rebuild entire structure anyway, just troubleshoot it on video and we see where we might go from there.

    What a headache that is... I was thinking that a discrete component amplifier was more difficult to repair... As you say, these IC's are getting harder to procure as original and unused parts, but perhaps your local supplier had a bout of counterfeit IC's and decided not to stock them any more... which means that a lot of otherwise useful and repairable equipment will end up as landfill... I have a task ahead to replace an STK 0040 II, but could not source it, so will try an STK 0050 II, which is equivalent, just a higher voltage rating... used in an Akai amplifier...

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +1

      Discrete component designs are more difficult to troubleshoot because you have to deal with bias and feedback circuits, but for any competent technician this is not an issue. IPM designs are much simpler and easier to repair, the problem now is just finding replacements. Can you say planned obsolesce? I knew you could.

    • @jmcgatkinson

      12voltvids I can remember that (planned obsolescence) being mentioned about motor cars 25 years ago. Yes, about 5 years ago I remember fixing a channel on a 'Marantz', with (I think) an STK 0080 II IPM. Comparatively easy to replace.. I also had project using 2SJ 48/2SK 133 output mosfets which developed distortion... Tracked it to 2 12k, 1Watt (bias) resistors that went to greater than 1M(ohm), but physically looked ok (no discoloration). This amp has a fuse (3AG) for each rail and channel, so they can be removed and replaced with say, a 10 ohm, 5W, to measure quiescent current...

      I do repairs and video / film archiving mail order. I have tapes and films sent from all over the world, so really paypal is the only option to get paid quickly. I don't like them, but there really isn't another option. No way I am using western union because they have even higher fees which I am more than happy to pass on to end users.
      When they drop the ball though, they really drop it as this did this time, and even though in the end I did get an admission that they were at fault, they were not willing to repay me for the charges the bank charged due to a screw up on their side. I had to work that out with my bank manager. I twll you when I went in and asked for a bank draft to close out my account so I could move all my money across the street they sharpened their pencils real quick. I wont say how much I was ready to pull from the bank but it was substantial and got their attention real quick.

      I don't do direct transfers under any circumstances. Too much fraud out there. Everything I do is done by credit card or cash. I don't even have a debit card. If I walk into a business and they don't accept cash, and there are a few I say "Sucks to be you" and walk out. There are a few restaurants that are that way. Some have signs that say no cash. I place my order and then go to pay with cash. When they refuse it I say sorry that's all I have. It's even better after consuming the meal. Then they pretty much have to accept it, or I get a free meal. One place told me not to come back, and I replied "don't worry, the food wasn't that good anyway"

    PayPal have lost it!!! I recently tried to refund someone and it wouldn't pull from my credit card (as it does for all payments) - it wanted to pull from my bank account which is setup for deposits from PayPal only... So it wouldn't let me refund!!! Also, a friend of mine that sells upgrades for the Atari ST computers (PSU, RAM, CPU upgrades) had his account suspended, because the muppets at PayPal saw the word 'mod' in the item description 'Atari ST 16Mhz CPU mod', and they incorrectly assume it's something to do with copyright infringement... Furthermore, he needed to order capacitors from EBAY, and since they blocked his Paypal, he got his mum to order the parts and deliver to his address. PayPal then banned his mum by association!!!!'

      Yes I know all about how they work., They made my life hell a dozen years ago when I was liquidating old video gear from my old company.I have been through this before but to quickly recap, I sold an old camera. Shipped it, got paid. The unit was working, but had quite a few miles on it, and was described as tested and working, however due to age has no warranty, no refunds, no returns.After it was shipped out, about 6 weeks later the buyer contacted me asking to return it. (I figure he needed a Betacam to shoot a project on, and now the project is done he wants to return) I said, no refunds. I was talking to a guy at work that told me about his paypal woes and I got nervous, and called my credit card company to report my card lost. I had already spent the money. A few days later the buyer tried a charge back, and paypay demanded I replace the money in my account while the dispute was ongoing.I submitted all the documentation I had and figured I was in the clear.A few weeks went by, and I get a demand by paypal for the funds because the bank of the buyer had reversed the funds due to the credit card used for the original transaction having been reported stolen. I don't know what ever happened to the buyer, I never saw the camera again, and I don't care as I got my money. A few months later a collection agency started calling me at 4:00 AM and I was not too friendly with them.I said, well you got the right name, wrong person. I don't know anything about what you are claiming. I swore I would never again use paypal, and then there was something on ebay I wanted. Now, the only reason I was able to open another account was because the old account was in my business name, and had my old business address associated with them.

      I just use PayPal to accept payment and buy the odd thing with it. I don't use eBay ever because I don't enjoy being bent over and given it up the ass in shipping charges to Canada due to the over priced is postal service. It is cheaper to have stuff sent to the states but I don't have time to sit for an hour or more to cross the stupid border to pick something up. So I just don't buy anything from eBay. I don't sell on there either because I have been burned as a seller in the past.

    Those Original Darlington modules are pretty hardy and well made. I have an old Fisher with two of them in it. They are 100 watts each RMS and they are still going strong after 30 plus years. I think it is other bad components that cause them to go out or dried up heat sink compound. I hope that mine don't go out. I would hate to have the same issue finding a good one. I would rather pay $50 US for one as long as it is the real deal.

    I personally think it’s unfair to put the cost on the customer. But with that being said when you go purchase a new car they charge you a destination fee. Doesn’t the car dealership have to bring cars to their location in other to have something to sell. Why should anyone have to pay to have a car delivered so you can buy it......oh yeah it’s another scam. Next time you buy a car refuse to pay the destination fee or move on. If everyone did this I wonder what would happen ?🤔🤔🤔

    • @12voltvids

      When I repair something the customer pays the actual cost of parts and all charges inured to gets said parts to me, and that includes any broker fees, or extra fees by carriers like FedEx and DHL. I don't mark up the cost to cover these expenses.
      When I worked in the repair shop, a 2.00 part could be inflated to 20.00 easily, because nobody back then knew what parts costs. Today you can't get away with that because everyone has internet access and knows how to google a part number.
      So I sell all parts at invoice cost, and show the invoice, and charge a very fair labour charge. I make it up with the youtube views.
      In this case after all the smoke cleared, and yes I did add the cost of the freight, and paypals screw up to the bill, I made a grand total of 50.00 for all the headaches. Sending parts back and forth. Wasn't worth my time, plus about 3 months of pissing around on this thing.

    What you need to do is get a debit card for your bank account and just link that. If you want to access the cash out of your PayPal, get one of the debit cards that PayPal offers. They are free, and withdrawing cash (at least in the United States) is also free on any "Money Pass" ATM. Doing it that way guarantees their will be no overdraft charges. You will get an alert if they try to take more money than is in your PayPal, and they have no direct access to your actual account. I sell stuff on eBay and I've had them place money on hold for a return or something like that, but it just makes my PayPal negative and there is no fee for that.

    Passed it on to the customer? So you gambled with somebody else's money and charged them for it? And because you don't read things you agree to with online companies like paypal it cost the customer 48 dollars?
    Dude.... if a new part is 50 dollars, and you find one on Ebay for 14 dollars it is always going to be used. If you can get the part for 50 bucks then get it. How much do you pass on to the customer before you just do what you are getting paid to do?
    Cutting corners, man... bad customer service. THAT is the problem with the service industry.
    You need to accept some responsibility and eat that 60 bucks.
    Or at least record when you tell the customer why you are charging more than the damn thing is worth just to fix it with used parts. That is a video I would like to see.
    At this point in the project... other than what you charge to open and look at the thing. The customer owes you exactly 0 dollars.
    And the when you go to figure the bill, the right thing to do is to charge them 0 dollars for it.

      Customer always pays. That's the way business works. Estimates are given to cover parts and he was quoted high enough to cover parts. Had PayPal not fucked up and caused a 48.00 bank charge the bill would have been below estimate. I always build ín an extra 50 because some asshole sellers even though they are instructed to ship by post, send my fed ex, ups or dhl, which charge upwards of 40.00 in broker fees after the fact. So i build that cost in and then if the part gets shipped by post and there is no broker fees that cost is not charged.
      This unit there were no new parts available. Long obsolete. All the parts on eBay are either used or counterfeit.

  • @colmiga
    @colmiga 8 лет назад +1

    The vast majority of these electronic parts from China/Hong Kong are counterfeit. In the last few years there has been a surge in "new" parts of models that have not been in production for years by the original manufacturer and at really good prices. Most of the time the parts are not real and are an inferior copy of the real item with a stamp on the front that looks authentic (sometimes even with a date code that is well after the original production run). They also sometimes make the part look "pulled" by tinning the leads with solder.
    Basically, if it is too good to be true, it probably is. You need to double and triple check the source of the parts to ensure they are genuine.

    I've seen a lot of bad (counterfeit) STK's from China. Mostly no bias - sound like crap, notch distortion, etc. I don't bother unless it's new old stock from USA seller. Lots of other newer type ID's no problem. eBay seller UT Source has been reliable. You might be able to find an ECG or NTE version.

    Also, Depending on where your rail voltages are, it appears that yamaha unit is a perfect scenario as the amplifier modules are external and separate from the rest of the system. Makes a perfect playground for generic amplifier modules. As I was saying, depending on where your rail voltages are, I have used TDA7294 amplifier modules to replace alot of STK crap in powered subwoofers and they work really well. But be careful, those ICs are heavily counterfeited as well, so what I have done was buy the amplifier kits online, and order the genuine ICs locally from parts distributors. Higher rail voltages you gotta go discrete using TIP35/36 or something along those lines, like I did with my Pioneer SX-780. You can get discrete kits as well.

      The problem with places like Mauser is that the cost to ship to Canada are astronomical. The module might be 70 or $80 as a if it's available and then another $50 to ship it. I ordered a small transformer for a tube radio from Mauser about six or seven years ago. The transformer was made by Hammond in Canada it was listed as $21. By the time it arrived it was over $100. There was freight then there was broker charges and then taxes. unfortunately Hammond transformer out of Toronto would not sell it to me direct I had to go through their distribution Network but it still makes my blood boil when I see the cost is $21 but by the time all the smoke clears it's 100 and I still have to mark that up and make some money off of it to the customer.

    Do those amplifier ICs go bad often? Because I have a Sharp stereo that possibly has a bad IC. When you turn the unit on it would make a loud pop followed by a fading fizzle sound and it would do this every time you turned it on. I did a video on it a while back and I ended up modding it so the audio going into the amp would run thru the headphone jack to an external amp but that can be reversed but is finding these ICs hard to do, like on Amazon?
    And I stay away from sites like Fleabay (Ebay). They need to crack down on BS like this.
    Heres a few that could possibly work.

    Genuine STKs are no longer manufactured. I think Panasonic completely changed the lineup into a new product line and sanyo is gone gone gone. This is why I no longer service STK amplifiers anymore, and in the case that the unit is sentimental to someone, I stick in a retrofit amplifier that can handle the obscenely high rail voltages these run at.

    Absolutely love your videos and from own experience can see how much time and money goes into a repair but not too sure the customer deserves the Paypal stuff up charges. I guess that's business/home repair work and you have to keep it at least break-even. What's the bet Paypal have that hidden away in their regularly changed and updated polices that are purposely long and confusing. They're always changing their policy and it gets so frustrating keeping up to date with their latest efforts to rort their customers. Not good with the replacement parts but another great video.

      Much of that video was shot before this was resolved. I ended up getting a refund on the part, and after a few conversations with my bank, they reversed the charges, but if they hadn't then the client would have had the charges added to the bill. It wouldn't have been the entire 48.00 but it would have been enough to keep me from operating at a loss. I only quoted him 65.00 to repair it, based on 25.00 for the part and 40.00 for the labour. Yes I work very reasonable, so as you can see a hit like that would be tough to absorb, but it was all resolved. Now I have to find another supplier, and hopefully the next one will actually work. Dam I miss the days when I could get in the car and go to the electronics supplier, and he had everything I needed. Now nobody is stocking anything but Adriano, and Raspberry Pi products.

    STK modules have been out of production for quite some time. Chinese recyclers make more money on a zero or low quality control model. They have a higher profit margin if they just ship out a replacement, rather than spend the time testing each module.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад

      I wash my hands with these modules. I leave it to the customer to purchase and supply. If they don't like that I hand it back to them unrepaired. I don't need the hassle of ordering, waiting for, paying duties and broker charges when shipped by one of the rip off carriers. When a defective part arrives even if they replace it, if they ship by DHL there is another 22.00 charge that has to be passed along to customers and then they get mad. So my policy is I supply the customer with the part and let them source it. If the part is bad, they can deal with contacting the seller for a refund or replacement.

The second one was also FUBAR, so the seller refunded the part cost, but not the shipping back and forth (yes the prick wanted the bad part back so he could sell it to someone else) I lost my shirt on this.
      In the end I got the unit all fixed up, and the client wasn't happy.
      He said he could hear the slightest hiss in the background using headphones. I put on his headphones and could not hear any sound. If I cranked the faders up ALL the way to 10, cranked the tone controls up all the way and the master volume I could hear the faintest, and I mean the faintest of hiss in the background out of both channels. He swore up and down that before it broke he could crank everything up to 10 and it was the dead quiet. At that point it was a no win situation.
      All amplifiers have some noise, and cranking all the preamp (microphone) stages up he was hearing background noise in the electronics. No win situation. I pulled the parts and gave it back to him broken.

    Happened to me once with a horizontal output transistor, original one was shorted, I ordered one (and it was from Germany) and it blew instantly. I scratched my head as I was checking everything and all looked fine, I took a chance and ordered another from another supplier, worked fine, and still going strong. Either it was a fake or a defective part. It didn't look pulled though.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +1

      We al got screwed with the fake horizontal output transistors. I was one of the guys that discovered this scam.2SD1555 and 1556 were very common transistors in the day. I used to order them by the bag of 25 at a time. FOr years they were good, then all of a sudden new ones started failing. I would replace a horizontal output and the TV came back a few days later with the same part blown. Replace it again, and a few days later it would pop again.Of course this threw me for a loop for awhile. I was blaming flybacks, and CRTs for intermittently shorting.I had 1 TV come back about 3 times, and the boss gave the customer a refund. The set was just sitting there on the floor waiting to go in t he dump.I was talking to other local techs and they too were baffled about this new problem if repeated failures of HOT, and nobody could figure out why.Then one day a identical Panasonic prism TV came in with a bad CRT.That set was going to the dump, but I decided to salvage the flyback and HOT from it. I put the HOT in this set that kept blowing transistors, and it didn't fail. Hmmm, I was on to something. The boss said I could have the old TV, so I took it home. I ran it day and night, kept working.I then took my dremel to an original blown transistor, and one of these replacements I had been buying, and as soon as I ground away the plastic case and exposed the silicon di it was obvious that these 2 transistors that looked identical on the outside and had the exact same markings and labels were completely different. The original had a di that measured about 1/4" square, the knock off, 1/16". That was the "a-ha" moment. I contacted the vendor to tell him all the transistors he was selling were bad. He didn't believe me, said he was selling them by the thousands all over the country.I asked him why he thought he was selling so many, and showed him the original, and his knock off cut away.I started buying my transistors from Panasonic and Sony from that point going forward, and never got another knock off. There was a huge price difference though. The knock off was 5.00, the original 35.00!

      PayPal sucks. "Use your imagination" my daughter has had problems with them. When she was younger she set up PayPal to buy a PlayStation network sub. Did what was supposed to be a 1 time payment. When the subscription ran out she didn't renew but they tried to charge her bank account. The account she used to service PayPal had no money in it because she set up a different account. So the funds bounced and the bank charged her 48.00. Then PayPal put their own NSF charge of 25 on top. She was furious and contacted PayPal that said sony was to blame as they put the extra charge through. She contacted PlayStation and they did in fact slam her into a quarterly sub and she didn't call to cancel because she had told them it was a 1 time payment (or so she said). Well long story short she had to pay the bank the 48.00 overdraft fee they wouldn't reverse it but she told PayPal to go fuck themself. PayPal sent the 25.00 charge to collections. She told them to go fuck themself too when they tracked her down. Now she is 20 and none of the banks will issue her a credit card. So I would say PayPal fucked her.

      The thing with hybrid amp ICs is that all the support parts are in the IC.There are a few resistors to supply the NFB, and coupling caps. There is nothing else that will cause it to fail. Put the correct voltage in, and give it a signal, and you will get the amplified output. I have a clean correct signal going in, and the first IC I received was distorted under load, and clean with no speaker load (The headphone output is the same output as the speaker line except it goes through a resistor to limit the level to the headphones). The second IC, well you saw the voltages. Everything is being pulled up to B+, even the input pin is pulled up to B+If you remember the original first part, the original dud IC was making a loud crackling sound. I could swap ICs and it would work guaranteed, because all my voltages are there and correct. They were correct with IC #2 the one that distorted under load.

    I find that design electrical engineers have absolutely no consideration for technicians who have to work on their electronics.

    Hey 12 volt vids I love watching your channel and learn alot from you!!
    This reminds me exactly of what I go through with when I need to get parts for cars (auto tech by trade) and the only parts you can get are cheap chinese aftermarket junk because the dealer no longer supports the vehicle!!!
    So frustrating!! I feel your pain!!!

      Yup, cheap Chinese knock off parts. ARGH, now I remember why I got out of the business.

      My daughter just got double charged by PayPal and she took it to social media. Myself I don't use social media. Other than yt, but that is a little different than the fbook and tweeter.

      Anytime I purchase anything PayPal gives us the choices of paying with our PayPal balance if any; or our two banks or two credit cards.

      Been there too, Paypal are strange i been thru the same shit that you have money on your paypal account and i wonder if the currency (USD/CAD/Euro/SEK) and so on can be the culprit because i so remember having $40-50 on the account and i also have a creditcard linked to it, then you would assume that they will draw it from your balance? Nope and i think this happens when the currency is not USD if it is GBP etc then they draw it from your bank should it be so damn hard to make the balance available for all currencies?! Seems like that!
      Anyway as usual great videos you post great channel with great content keep up the great work!
