  • This video explains the function of the CCS; which is the only rig floor machine that permits CONTINUOUS CIRCULATION while making connections; Now in continuous service with Statoil, ConocoPhillips and now with Petrobras.
The CCS maintains steady ECD, bottom hole pressure, cuttings mobility, and constant mud temperatures and properties; with no circulating back of cuttings before connections, no accumulation of fluids during connections and no re-stabilisation after connections.
With no added components in the drillstring or high pressure mud connections on the rig floor and no disconnection of mud from the drillstring, the CCS is instrinsically reliable and safe and is reducing Drilling NPT dramatically.

I worked on that project. It is a blast from the past seeing this video. Back in the beginning of my career. That was a blast of a project!

    I have 2 questions.
    1. How to establish circulation if there is no pipe in the hole?
    2. How to run casing while keep continuing circulation?
    Thanks a lot.

      1. There is pipe in the hole.
      2. You don't run casing while the CCS is on well center. The CCS is only there for the drilling portion.

I don't see how the few minutes that the pumps are off when adding a triple string of pipe are going to make a serious difference in a difficult formation. Would this same CCS work during a pipe trip when the normal circulation might be disrupted for 8-16 hours during a worn bit change or when swapping from a PDC bit to a mud motor as the well trajectory turns horizontal ? How much time would this system add to a 3500m trip? Could the CCS be used during casing operations to control troublesome open hole sections? I don't work in the oil patch. I'm just a mechanical engineer who is always looking to optimize any process.

This is used to control gas intake to mitigate BHP fluctuations caused by low/fluctuating GLR. Mostly in UBD.

      So much for ESDs
