- Back in 1997 I wrote and co-directed an animated short with H.R. Giger & James Cowan from Morpheus, Int. Unfortunately we encountered budget problems and also made the mistake of using "Mirai" in conjunction with 3DS Max based on promises that they would get their rendering engines working, never happened. 10's of $1,000's of dollars later I sadly had to put the project on hold. I still own the license and one day I will bring this project to fruition. For now all of the 3D assets from the project are in suspended animation on back-up drives.
This short trailer was a Siggraph 97 teaser for the convention in LA that year. I was the 3D consultant for IBM's IntelliStation line at the time and we featured this clip repeatedly.
Out of sentiment I found this clip again by chance in my archives and felt that I should put it out there for fun and see how far we've come in 12 years :-)
We are all terribly saddened by Giger's death. I am so in denial and shock at the moment that it numbs me. I finished the story boards and have final approval, but the Live Action appearance from Giger in this film will never happen now, but I will process the private footage I have from him and integrate that in.
Erik
thank you Erik
sincerely
As a let's just say "big fan"...Yes, this is really captivating. I imagine a virtual gallery where I could go into each landscape of each painting as you showed. Really great work in progress. Plz finish this.
I've just restarted Pre-Pre-Production again :-) The story is being rewritten, but along the same lines as previous. It's been long enough, the Technology is there and it's time to bring "Alptraum" to full life. I will start Blogging progress, but for now it's a lot of paperwork and funding issues. I have set the initial date for March 2013
Interesting work Erik, now living in France I hope to one day soon plan the ultimate road-rip and make my pilgrimage to the The H.R Giger museum. I still remember the first time I found his art by accident in an OMNI magazine in the 70's... I have not been the same since. Compliments of the season to you 🎄
Yes, very cool. Wish I could watch it with 3d virtual reality head helmet and navigate through that wierdly soothing honest world...
Thanks for the kind words. I do intend to finish this Gem one day, it's just a rough economy right now
Looks like a cool idea for a virtual gallery where can explore not just the artwork but the landscapes , you could always uses a free game engine to do that now , even UDK would nicely for this type of project
I didn't knew 3ds max was a thing bad then.
Thank You Sir :-) I'm ramping up everyday now and we should be in full production again around April or May. Let's hope
1:25 its interesting to see some of Giger's Dune concept art recreated like this
It was a very big vision and we were able to bring many of his paintings to life, but we eventually faced budget constraints. I still have a lot of unreleased footage that I'm saving for future release.
Amazing! Why can't any major studio back this?
this is brilliant, i would love to see it finished.. mindblowing!
Have you thought of utilizing Kickstarter to perhaps get the funds to assist you in bringing this masterpiece to life? What can we do as fans to assist you?
I love this
Thanks
That sounds great, this video reminded me of a terrifying dream of once had, specifically 1:25 - 1:35. When you get it up and running again, I'll definitely support it and spread the word!
Very cool! I would love to see Giger's aliens and landscapes brought to life!
The last time I watched and commented this video was some two years ago. I'm glad to find out that you are still holding on the idea of finishing it.
Is there any progress?
I'm really curious about its content. Is it a documentary or more like a conceptual animated movie based on Giger's paintings?
sounds amazing
Actually, "Alptraum" is the German word for "Nightmare" and Giger did in fact see his visions in the form of nightmares which in turn created his worlds. I wrote the story based on Giger's life and I envisioned his paintings coming to life late at night when an Astrological event takes place. I'm living back in Germany and I am pursuing funding here so that I can bring "Altpraum" to life and finally finish this project more than 10 years later :-) Stay tuned!
Great news!
jus.......wow :| this needs to be finished.....wana see more
I hope you get to fininsh this. Its too amazing not to
Any news on this Erik? Is the project still going forward?
Please tell me at 1:04. what is it, it seems to be a intelligent alien creature, not that the original wasn't smart or anything but the one at 1:04 seems to have human features.
This is great even now !!!
Sure the animation could look better, but it is very dynamic and I somehow like the vintage taste to it.
Why don't you try to finish it now? I personally would love to see it.
You could look for financing trough kickstarter(dot)com
Giger still in on it?
