Scuba Chris... You sold me on the Avet reels.. I picked up a MXJ MC single speed... Brother.. I can cast this joker half a mile with NO Backlash!!!! I'm hoping for a Raptor this Christmas!!! Great video's brother!!!!
I bought the MXL Gen 2 MC and I love that reel. It casts beautifully with 6 or 8 and bait from the beach. As I moved into tuna fishing, I regret not buying the Raptor though - the non-raptor is good up to 30-40 lb rigs, but the Raptor can handle 60-80 lb. I also love the Okuma Cavalla 12 for this role, but wish it had MC like the Raptor.
Have you tried the Alijos12 yet? I was one of the testers. This reel casts farther than any other casting reel i've used to this day! Horsed in a large stingray like it was nothing. Man i LOVE this reel!
Just check my channel. I was one of the testers for this reel. I lived on a pier for 2-weeks testing it daily. Of all my reels this is my best distance caster. I have quite a few reviews on this reel. Honestly? The Alijos is my very best conventional reel that i own for shore casting. @@andrewmorke
Amen. I just purchased two of the Raptor models (SX 6/4 MC & MX 6/4 MC). They’re a little pricey, but I saw several Avet reels in action on a prior long range trip (6 days) and they were small beasts. I still need one more model (EX 30 or 50) for large Bluefin, but I’m still researching which of the two is the better choice.
Avet makes great reels but I wish they were more refined like shimano. The slop on the antireverse gets annoying for jigging and the bearings could use an upgrade. Besides that, they are really good reels if properly taken care of.
Hello Chris I was going through my videos and came across this video. Now that you've had time to play around with this Avet fishing reel. How well can you cast it. And how happy are you with the overall reel. Chris has usual I always love your honesty and your videos. I am looking to purchase either an accurate or an Avet like the one you have here. Chris as usual thanks a lot I sure appreciate you a bunch. I would not purchase fishing reels without honest opinion. Thank you so much Chris for your time
I took this on the boat and for jigging it's awesome! Shore casting baits i'm still limited to 60-70yd on my 11' Daiwa Emblem. When i put the Avet on my 13' Nitro i'm getting more yardage. So the longer casting rods are working better. Some innovative anglers "shave" the mags down to 50% of the original to lessen the magnetic drag to cast farther. I'm thinking of ordering ceramic bearings that don't expand or heat-up from the friction. I think the purpose of this real was casting baits from a boat, not shore casting for distance. For now it's my inside line. I'm still glad i got it. Doesn't cast as far as my Newell or the Blue Yonder, but it's still part of my rig placements.
Hi Chris how does the Avet compare to the Okuma Tesoro 12 star drag in terms of ease of casting, backlashes and distance achieved. Also how do these two reels compare in terms of line capacity and the width of the spools. Regards Gary
Hi Gary, Since you asked for an review here it is- 1) The Raptor is a level drag but rated for casting. Short distances like casting irons off a boat is fine. The Tesoro 12 isn't rated as a casting reel but it casts longer & smoother then my Torium 30. It's a star drag. For castability it's a no contest. 2) All conventionals do backlash if you don't know how to properly set it's drag functions. I've backlashed both units testing it in the field, but not badly. You have less backlashes using the Raptor because it cannot cast far. The Tesoro 12 casts as far as the best conventionals around. 3) Costs? The Raptors are way more expensive. 4) Line capacity? I feel the Raptors do hold more line for units fairly equal in size. 5) Looks? I personally find the Avets more "angular" in its outline. The Tesoros are stylish. When i got my pair of Tesoro 12's i sold off my Avets & stored my Toriums & Newells as they hold their re-sell values. Avets are a hard re-sell. Price wise & they're really only used for charter boat jigging. I shore cast my Tesoros. ruclips.net/video/W-83N1NIpvI/видео.html
Wish i could give you my answer. This is my first Avet and still a virgin. Also i haven't thrown a Accurate as well. But i've been offered a new Pro-Staffer position with a company that makes great reels. I'm studying the pdf application to see if i'm ok with the guidelines.
Pietro. For medium surfcasting, the Avet SX MC, for medium heavy the Avet MXL. One speed is fine for surfcasting. I get about 100-120 yards with 6-8 oz. sinkers.
new subscriber has it today. I will be following to see what rod you use for your new Avet reel. I don't know that much about how to set the Reel up have never owned a lever drag reel. I have always used star drag reels. my understanding is before you put braid on a real you need to have some type of backing can you explain this to me so I understand thank you
I explained my thought process in this review. I put on 180yds of 50lb Jerry Brown braid for backing with a top shot of 120yds of clear 50lb Trilene Big Game monofilament. The mono will cast smoother & farther then the loosely lined braid. I still need the braid backing for line distance. It was tied together via an Albright Knot to "slip" through the guides.
I understand what you're saying and I know you put that in the details how you spool the real life question is I was always told you could not put braid directly to the spool of the real because it will slip. You had to use tape. Or mono before you add braid
Hi there I'm from Cape Town South Africa, would love to know, Can I use this reel for fishing from the beach where I have to cast a bait or lure out, basically is this reel castable?
I would. If there's large tunas & marlin around i'd use the Avet Pro's for my outside lines & this for the inside if you run for large pelagics. If you stick to the coastals this reel is enough. Guys bottom jigging off San Diego are pulling up massive Yellowfin Tunas on this and smaller Avet Raptors. Beastie of a reel!
I think the process is like this. 1) If you have the reel already, match it up to the proper rod (ie power & weight rating, length, type of guides, how many pieces, used for bait or slide, good/bad reviews, metal butt?). 2) If you have a good casting rod, what type of reel would it match up to? A lot depends if you're going to bait cast or slide? But if i was to recommend a conventional reel? Baitcasting: Trinidad/Torium30, Newell 300-400 series, Penn Jigmaster & 3/0 & Squall & Fathom, SeaGates & SeaLines. Sliding: Trinidad/Torium40-50, Newell 500-600 series, Penn 4/0 & 6/0, SeaGates, Penn Fathom, Penn Broadbill & Marlin conversions.
Depends on what type of rod you plan to use. But i wouldn't put money into a Ulua rod if you plan to use that reel. Smaller uluas to o'io is fine for that reel. To me a nice all around baitcasting rig is a Torium30HG on a Daiwa40 Ballistic. Sliding requires a beefier set-up.
Scuba Chris thank you so much, you are my favorite youtuber for a reason, i will definitely recommend your channel to all my fishing friends, god bless
are the torium 30's not still on sale at charlies for 198$? seems like too much going on with that avet reel... shouldnt be worried about burning your thumb... thats what teaches you good technique.
Not sure if it's still on sale yet? Not worry about my thumb either. I was catching Uluas back in the 70's using a lot less. Also +800lb marlins from my boats. I had a manager of a popular local fishing supply store tell me directly how he felt about the Toriums recently. But all this doesn't matter. What matters is what your style is & what's comfortable to your game. There are many cheaper choices out there. I'm showing one of the more popular East Coast choice of reels. I feel this would be a good choice for me as well. When i was in Thailand this was a popular reel there. One of my bowling buddies here uses a Avet with great results & he's happy with the performance. So i'm going to give it a try. The no "bird-nesting" feature seems to be a good feature to test first. I do like the 2-speed option. Waiting for my rod to arrive to try on this, but with the Xmas mailing rush it's going to be a long wait.
So the 2 speed is the other way around your correct but switch it low speed is less line pulled in and high speed brings more line in you wanna use low speed for bigger fish because there harder to pull in so your correct but the other way around
i have AVET hx 5/2 mc raptor , and i wanna use it on the beach not on a boat , so is it possible to use it as spinning reel you know to throw the line when i'm standing on the beach
I think can handle. Recently off San Diego a jigger hooked a 280lb Ahi with the smaller 6/3 unit. This is regarded as a Medium sized Avet reel like a Torium.
I actually bought this model for all around usage. Trevally, Bonefish, Threadfin, jigging off the boat, etc. I knew it was a solid strong 1-pc unit. Ulua GT's? We'll see. This is the 6/4, the smaller 6/3 already brought in a 280# Yellowfin off Sand Diego recently. I see many Ulua fishermen using Toriums. This unit is roughly the same size with much better stats (and a higher price tag as well). Not many local anglers use this product here since you can buy 2 Toriums or 1 Avet for the same price.

Avets are great reels, I’m surprised not many people use em out here
Locals are more into Newells. Easier to cast & modify.

Mister, what is the bette Avet reel for surfcasting ? Regard
Sorry, stopped using Avets years back. This one was ok. Larger units were harder to distance cast. I'm casting 2 Tesoro12's now with great distance.

If you know how to cast conventionals, yes it is. If you use braid the smaller line diameter will give you less air friction thus longer castability.
