It was a real multi-role plane at a time when such a concept did not exist yet.Designed by a Ukrainian, Oleg Antonov, during the war. The prototype flew in 1947, production from 1949. From 1950 produced in China (Y-5).Produced in Poland from 1960 to 1996, and here most of them were built, over 12,000 aircraft.

I think there is still a turboprop version in production. Alöso has a different wing.

@@PaddyPatrone That's right, but I don't know if they are mass-produced or still prototypes. For me, the charm of An-2 is largely a radial engine. Currently, there are few of these aircraft in Poland.

This would make a great air camper. You could have a kitchen, shower, bathroom and a comfy bed. It is a shame fuel prices have been manipulated.

I've been in de Havilland DHC-3s, one with a radial engine, and several with the radial replaced with a turbo prop. It makes me wonder why this plane, a workhorse just like the de Havilland, isn't used in higher numbers with a turboprop engine installed? Maybe too much air friction with the bi-plane design.

Same reason why we don't see many AN-2s around. With the price of gas, can you imagine the cost of filling it up? I did some rough calculations and it costs 800$ USD to fill up the 1,200L fuel tanks. Sure, it can linger in the air for 6 hours, but you won't get anywhere fast. And that 6 hours literally cost you 1,000$ USD

@@OfficialUSKRprogram and thats with your american prices. if you consider fuel prices here in germany or the EU in general (where AN-2 where originally widely used) that factor is even bigger. you can get an-2 sometimes for a lower price than your regular 2 or 4 seated aircrafts, simply because there are so many around, but many cant afort the upkeep.

Incorrect. Antonov design bureau was Russian and founded in Russia in Novosibirsk by Oleg Antonov (a Russian), staffed by mostly Russian engineers. An-2 was designed and built there. Later, Antonov manufacturing, and later the rest of the bureau was moved to Kiev for political reasons. Antonov and the engineers simply moved to Ukraine. Saying An-2 is Ukrainian is like saying the first iMac built and engineered in the US in the 1980s are Chinese because iPhones are manufactured in China today. Please learn history.
