The Norman-dynasty "Norbert & Filip NORMAN"
Driving on the highway from Antwerp to the coast, we see the magnificent lofts of Filip & Norbert Norman a couple of miles before we reach the beach of Knokke-Heist. Very nice lofts built in the early sixties, white painted are regarding a lot of nice moments and memories. In this report I will tell you the story of this lofts and the big moments which Norbert and Filip had during the last decennia.
Grandfather Cyriel Norman was a flax-manufacturer out of the village of Oeselgem. He started with pigeons in 1902 and died in 1967. He also was a very successful fancier. In these early years he already won the 2nd National out of Libourne. In 1929, grandfather Cyriel bought “De Lange” for 6000 Bfr, which was in the early 30-ies the price for two houses.
“ De Lange” was an exceptional racer and breeder. He won 3 times the 1st price out of Angouleme.
Father Norbert, who also was a flax-manufacturer, flew out under his fathers wings in 1945, and settled himself in Oostrozebeke, about 10 km away from Oeselgem. Father also directly kept pigeons around his new house. Norbert raced in Oostrozebeke until 1978, and this with a lot of success. While they kept racing in Oostrozebeke, the family moved into their new residence, named “Maspalomas”, in the Natiënlaan 154 at Knokke-Heist.
In 1966, the first youngsters flew around “Maspalomas” and they were raced under the name Desmet - Lippens. Most of the youngsters were born in at the old loft and were moved into their new lofts. The most important basic birds at that time were the unbeatable birds of the Catrysse brothers, Moere and a hen out of the “Atomic”-line from Van Hee, Wervik.
1970 was the first year they participated on Barcelona. They astonished the world by winning the 1st International Barcelona 1970. The most remarkable thing on this victory is that his father had predicted it before. The Barcelona-winner is the only National winner that father and son Norman have ever sold. It was also the most expensive bird in that time ever sold.
In 1971, father Norbert made a bet with Andre Busschaert for 250000 Bfr, which was a huge amount that time, about winning 1 bird in the top-100 National on Barcelona that year. Norbert accepted it and placed even 2 birds, the 91st and the 96th, in the 100 first National.
In that same year, 1971, Norbert and Filip won their second National race. In Oostrozebeke, they won with an advantage of 20 m/min the 1st National Limoges.
They repeated this stunt and even better in 1977 by winning the 1st, 2nd and 3rd National Limoges and 6 birds in the first 10 National.
In the following period they also won the 1st National Pau hens 1973, 1st International Pau hens 1973, 1st National Limoges 1984, 1st National Limoges Derby 1984, 1st National Argenton 1989, 1st National Argenton 1991, 1st Primus Interpares in 1982, 1st ace-pigeon long distance K.B.D.B. 1982 with “The Plastron”, 1st Champion long distance K.B.D.B. 1984 and 1st Champion youngsters K.B.D.B. in 1989.
Father Norbert died in October 1997 after having a lot of success with his business, his family and also with his loving hobby, racing and breeding pigeons.
After Norbert died, the pigeons were not the most important thing to think about for Filip. He is director of a big printing-factory, “Die Keure”, specialised in schoolbooks, and he is managing a staff of 200 employees. He also is governor of the biggest institute in organizing the National races, “The Belgische Verstandhouding”.
