One of the best and darkest Shonen's of the early 2000s. The author has health issues, so it has a slow release schedule, but it definitely helped inspire many works that came afterwards. Demon Slayer, for example, drew a lot from D. Gray-Man. Arguably, D. Gray-Man did it much better as well, and covers some deep themes. It's definitely worth a read/watch.
It might not be too special visually, but the reason these are classics is because of how good the songs are, IMO. Solid visuals and fire songs. OP1,2 and 4 are openings I can still remember to this day. Compare to a lot of shounen, D.Gray Man also has pretty deep lore, and I think that's one of the reasons for its passionate fanbase.

I like the idea of a surprise anime OP from time to time, this was definitely a pleasant surprise for me. Ok, I'm gonna be that one loser who's gonna explain some things about the series since I'm a big D.Gray-Man nerd. D. Gray-Man came out in 2003 as manga and got an Anime Adaptation on around 2005 or 2006 and the anime ended in 2008 or 2009 because it caught up to the manga. It got a sequel anime in 2016 Called D.Gray-Man Hallow which continues where the previous anime left off which is why it looked much more modern. The anime takes place in the late 1800's and is basically about an organization called the Black Order who's goal is to collect the pieces of the God Crystal called "Innocence" which was made God himself and use it to defeat the Millennium Earl, the main antagonist of the series. Both sides have been at war for each other for hundreds of years. The Earl wants to destroy all of humanity and with the help of his family the Clan of Noah, "descendants" of sorts of the survivors of the Great Flood of the Old Testament. The Noah's are humans, but with supernatural powers and view other humans as an inferior sub-species. Along with the Noah's there are Akumas, mechanical demons created from the souls of dead human that the Noah Clan create in order to hunt down pieces of Innocence. The only means that the Black Order has to defend humanity against the Noahs and the Millennium Earl are Exorcists; a group of people who are chosen by the Innocence to serve as God's Apostles and fight against the Noah and Akumas. The Innocence are what causes those transformations that you saw in the openings and the powers differ with each Exorcists. The primary goal for both sides is to find the "Heart" which is like the core of all Innocence, and The Earl wants to destroy it because if he does then all other Innocence will be destroyed and because of that who ever finds it first is guaranteed to win the war. Characters- Allen Walker- Our main character who has a piece of Innocence within his left hand and because of that it gives him the ability to transform it. He's the newest Exorcist to join the black order. The Millennium Earl - The main antagonist and the head of the Noah Clan, so yeah he's one of the strongest characters in the series. He's a pretty bizarre character with even more bizarre appearance. Even now during the manga we are just finally learning about his past. Lenalee Lee: The main female lead, she's also an Exorcist like Allen and has Innocence in her boots, they're called "Dark Boots" which gives her extreme leg powers. Yu Kanda: The swordsman you saw in the opening and his Innocence is of course located in his sword which is named "Mugen". Lavi: Like Kanda his Innocence is located in his Hammer which can extend and change size with adding feeling any heavier to himself only. His weapon is called "Big Hammer Little Hammer". Good Guys and Bad Guys - Black Order: Good Clan of Noah: Bad. The series has a lot of twists and turns and it's funny because you two actually got some of them right. It's a classic Jump Series that has unfortunately has been sort of forgotten because of the manga's slow release date because of the author's health.

Ah yeah, D.Gray Man... Since the manga is far from finished, with a new chapter every 3 months, we have still long time before getting the end. An amazing story that's worth checking out, for sure. A manga I consider close in term of story telling would be Pandora Hearts, with its 1 op. And the author new show that just dropped, Case Study of Vanitas.
How I wish they would remake the anime for Pandora Hearts with the manga's resolution because not only could they improve on the animation from the original but they could get rid of that butchered ending they gave the anime that I could immediately tell was way off from the manga before I even read the manga and it was what prompted me to read the manga.

After years of watching animes D.Gray-man is still my absolute favorite, I’m sad the fandom is so small now, I wish there would be more chapters a year and a new adaptation of the entire series… but the health of the mangaka is what matters the most 🤧
It's not just a shounen it's also mystery, all the characters are amazingly well written, and the last op isn't from a spinoff the reason why the last op is so much better in animation is because it came out almost 10 years after the others the manga is still ongoing so when it has enough chapters for another season they will most likely make another season because it's really popular in japan not so much out side of japan though
D. Gray-man is, theoretically, about exorcists fighting akumas, but it's muuuuch deeper than that. When things start getting out of hand, u can't tell anymore who will continue alive and many informations start to appear, making characters take different sides. The last op from the last season released. In my opinion, it breaks the sequence of the story 'cause it focus much more on the visual than on the sotryline. I didn't read the manga yet, but I know that people who read don't like this season 😅
I will admit that the last was a disappointment but last season was aired on 2016 while previous season was on 2008 so obviously character design won't be same as classic seasons And if we talk about story, they didn't had source for the story line cause they caught upto the story of manga and Light novel so they have to stop it right And for the last, if you thinking of reading manga then I will recommend not to read it Cause story in manga is not far from anime and it a really slow phase manga Approx. 3 to 4 chapter a year

Very badly paced and skipped all over episodes. Making it impossible for the mangaka to catch up or the anime to pick up from the manga. Unless a total redo like Black Butler. With black Butler however that worked. Because it was done at a time in the plot that was not crucial. On this one it was a major turning point after an 8 yr hiatus. It was a total disrespect. Hoshino the mangaka has so much additional material for D.gray man that according to her only 15 makes it to the manga to fit the Shonnen manga demographic. Material is not the issue. It was the studio that decided to not respect her and her work. :( because the previous anime director did, and she was able to include light novel material. Now she has refined more material even from the beginning of the story. The issue is to find a studio and director that will be respectful.
fr D gray man and Katekyo Hitman Reborn are always together for me, since both are super underrated animes that i love. Every time DGM appears KHR also appears next or the reverse.
You can say whatever about this, but not "typical" shounen as it¨s everything except that xD 1) It's hell dark. getting exponentially darker and darker. 2) It's story driven 3) Main character is not the typical happy hero type but more suffering mentally hurt type 4) Main cast are reluctant heroes 5) You have the same villains THE WHOLE STORY. yea, you read this right. You get introduced to villains and they are the same the whole time. Not the typical shounen where you defeat villain and move on to next one. And you bet the villains are hella scary here. 10+ years later and I'm still traumatised from that first time a villan properly showed up O_O 6) plot armor? what is that 7) fan servise? there is literally NONE. not even a bit. 8) lastly, who is actually villain here? xD Also, till this day, till the newest manga chapter, I still can't get a grasp on main character's past lol. Can you imagine it? Main character's past is usually main driving force so you learn it early on. but here? It's total mystery lol

The Mangas not even half way done yet and there's a consistent mystery going on in it. But basically an orphan boy is adopted by a shitty dad who ran away from his exorcist cult, trains him in the ways of exorcism. But later the kids kicked out of the cult cause he's kinda possessed......

Ah d.gray-man, the best shonen anime. Too bad the author had health issue and the series was on its prime. So, it was put on hiatus. The author still has problem with her health though. Now the manga’s progress is too slow. Best anime in year 2006-2008

The Mangas not even half way done yet and there's a consistent mystery going on in it. But basically an orphan boy is adopted by a shitty dad who ran away from his exorcist cult, trains him in the ways of exorcism. But later the kids kicked out of the cult cause he's kinda possessed......
