One of the most common questions I get is how I mix, or "process" my audio. Let me be abundantly clear about something... The thing I am most self conscious about is my ability to mix audio. I'm never happy with the result, and often I find myself over thinking and under listening. Yeah, I made that word up.
My signal flow changes weekly, but the consistent fundamentals are all laid out in this video. "Kind of a lot of things doing very little work". I explain how I EQ, why, and when, why I use 5 stages of dynamics processing, and demo some listening exercises for which frequencies I cut in EQ and why.
THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! The purpose of this video is not for you to copy my settings. I mean, you can, but it's probably not going to be what your audio needs. Everyone's audio requires something different, so there are no one-size-fits-all preset that will save the day. What I'd like for you to take away from this video is WHY I made the decisions I made, so you can take the mindset, not the settings, and apply that to how you mix your own show.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is I always mix on studio monitors. I've got to write a blog post about this some day...
