  • Ian reviews the Slater Designs Sci-Fi 2.0 Surfboard: www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/sl...
New for 2020 is the Slater Designs Sci-Fi 2.0 surfboard in Firewire's LFT construction.
This updated version of the globally popular original Sci-Fi has been tweaked and refined to accommodate a wider wave range and more specifically improve performance at both the lower and upper ends of its ends of its wave spectrum.
Essentially more volume has been packed into a shorter length and the wide point has been shuffled forward of centre allowing the Sci-Fi 2.0 to be ridden an inch or 2 shorter, thereby improving its performance for the average surfer in smaller less than perfect conditions. The adjustments to the tail and rocker are significant; the tail has been pulled-in so the 2.0 copes far better with chop and still maintains the speed of the original but with more control than before. The new rocker which is similar to the Cymatic loosens up the tail and generally improves performance in quality waves without sacrificing any small wave prowess.
This latest addition to the Slater Designs line-up looks like a really usable shortboard for the intermediate guy or girl in average to good quality waves. The 2.0 would definitely fit-the-bill if you're looking for a good all-rounder, a board for pretty much any conditions you're likely to encounter on your home patch or on your travels.
Yes, I'm gonna say it...the Sci-Fi 2.0 has plenty of 'one board quiver' credentials; with great small wave performance and all the tools to excel in waves of significance in the 5 to 6 foot range. If you like travelling light or would rather keep things simple and bond with a single board you could do a lot worse than the Sci-Fi 2.0.
The Sci-Fi 2.0 shortboard is destined for great things in 2020, and once again the winning combination of Tomo, Kelly and Firewire's amazing construction looks to be a winner.
Firewire's Linear Flex Technology (LFT) has proven itself over the last couple of years to be the go-to construction for the perfect blend of durability and flex and in this instance has been primed with an extra carbon fibre strip down the centre of the board for added strength and flex . LFT features an 18mm wide composite Springer HD Suspension System that runs the length of the board (in effect a space age stringer) and is overlaid with a top-deck sheet to improve the boards resistance to 'ridging' often seen on traditional PU boards with a wooden stringer. LFT produces a feel somewhat akin to a brand-new PU board, but with a huge hike in durability, this will last for the lifespan of the board! Enjoy the lively sensation of a brand new board with the added durability of modern sandwich construction.

Bought a puddle jumper from you a few years ago. Great service. I hope your business comes out of this crisis in a good state. Wishing you and your staff all the best.

I purchased a 5”9” Cymatic from Boardshop UK and shipped to Portugal. The service is excellent! Ian offered excellent advice when I was trying to narrow down my options. You can’t go wrong with Boardshop UK. When I order the Sci-Fi 2.0 it’s going to be from Boardshop UK. I have a 5.”8” Omni as well which is a bit too short for me but it is an awesome board as it does well in steep waves. It doesn’t pivot as easy as the Cymatic. I prefer the Cymatic. I demoed the SciFi 1.0 and like it but the way Ian describes the 2.0 I’m already sold!

I have ridden the Sci-Fi 2.0 and that board really wants to go. I had a lot of fun on it. I need to demo the Evo and then make up my mind between the two.

How does the rocker compare to the cymatic? Is it the same or a touch flatter?

Would you say this is a good everyday board?

Hi! What is your opinion between the No Brainer and the Sci fi 2.0? I´m an intermediate surfer and I surf 2-6 foot waves in the middle of mushy and hollow. What do you think could be better for me, knowing that I have a JS Monsta 8 at 5'9 24,9L?
