    In this review I test out two stock Sci-Fi boards from Slater Designs. I surfed these two boards in 2-5’ surf with clean and windy conditions.
    The stock 5’7” at 26.2 liters felt good underfoot when the surf was clean but I struggled to get clean precise turns when the surf had some texture on it.
    The stock 5’6” at 24.8 liters felt good in both clean and windy textured surf because I could sink the rail quickly and keep it engaged throughout my turns.
    After studying the footage for this review I like the responsiveness of the 5’6” compared to the 5’7” in all the wave conditions I tested. Both boards felt good with Quad and Thruster set ups. The Thruster set had a quicker pivot and the Quad had more speed the entire time with good pivot on the right fin configuration.
    In the end I had the most fun on the 5’6” as a Quad and I enjoyed Firewire’s LFT EPS technology in clean and windy conditions. The LFT EPS felt lively and had a bit of flare in my turns compared to the 5’7”.
    I like the performance of the Sci-Fi in 3-6’ surf and I recommend it as a daily driver for intermediate / pro level surfers.
    Board Dimensions:
    5’6” x 18 ½ x 2 5/16 Liters 24.8
    5’7” x 18 ¾ x 2 3/8 Liters 26.2
    My Height: 5’9”
    Weight: 160 lbs or 72.57 kg

    Just wanna say I discovered your reviews a year or two ago and I absolutely LOVE them. Your explanations, in conjunction with your clips, are so thorough, that as a newer, intermediate surfer committed to progressing, I not only learn about the boards, I actually learn a TON of really critical info about surfing itself. I begin to understand the different approaches to riding waves of various size and shape via your explanations. You do an excellent job with these videos. Also, you’re an amazing surfer and I learn so much just by watching your technique, and it provides heaps of inspiration. Thank you! Keep up the great work. 🤙

    I have an EVO, and looking at this review makes me realize how awesome not having a pointy nose board is. When you see Noel surfing the Cymatic, his turns are way faster and sharper than when he's on a SKX or Sci-Fi, and that's exactly how I feel on my EVO vs my other traditional board.
    I'm a fan of the MPH... Thanks for a great review. I would love it if you reviewed the EVO helium

    For anyone looking at this board, tried out this board and really liked it. It was loose, snappy, and had really good speed. It may be too loose on bigger surf chest high and more. My surfing skill level is just starting to do turns off the lip. It was my top board of 13 boards I tried.

  • @dkilla01
    @dkilla01 5 лет назад +4

    Ok so I’m back today to follow up on previous comment. Before I give my first impression of this board, I must mention where I surfed it and what kind of conditions I surfed it in. I took my 6’2 Sci Fi out to Blacks this morning as a quad set up with the Julian Wilson Air core fins as side fins and the performers in the neo quad rears. The waves were well overhead and breaking fat. What I means as fat is that the wave comes in as one big fat wall and then peaks into an A frame at the last minute and breaks hella peaky. On these days it’s better to either bring extra foam or take your chances on a flatter rocker, cause it’s all about that big drop.That being said, the design features that spoke the loudest where the straight rail line with the tapered rail which gave the board a track that wanted to round out my turns instead of that 12 o’clock vert that I like. The next was the speed, If I had to put into words it would be Demon Speed that is addicting. The channels, the fins and the parallel, tapered rails made it past those close out sections into the shoulder to set up for your turns. Lastly I think this board is good at driving down the line to make critical sections, I’ve seen Kelly surf it at backdoor and Fiji, not sure if it was stock fins though. I’ll come back for a long term assessment after I’ve surfed the board for awhile. Cheers

    Nice review Noel !
    You do a great job in describing the differences between the boards and i have very similar feelings to you, despite being a much lower level surfer.
    I'm 188cm and 80kg intermediate and i currently own a 5'7 omni, and a brand new 5'6 Cymatic.
    Had a couple of waves on a friends 5'11 sci fi a couple of years ago and i remembered how easy that tail turned.
    That had me buying the Cymatic as a replacement for my beaten up Omni, as i've grown fond of Tomo's noseless boards.
    Now the difference is huge between my Omni and Cymatic, surfed both with reactor and performer quads,
    But the Cymatic feels so effortless, much easier to go vertical and stay in the pocket ! I feel it specially in the junky surf we get,
    more flow, and longer rides with the Cymatic due to making it past sections i wouldn't make with the Omni.
    I havent gotten solid surf yet since i have the Cymatic but curious to see how it does once it gets to 5ft with a decent period,
    as in those conditions the Omni really comes to life.
    Hydronaut review coming up as well ? I'm thinking to add that one above the Cymatic to potentialy replace the Omni.

    Hi Noel!
    Just want to thank you for making great reviews, and give you some feedback!
    I’m 186cm 80kg Inter/advanced surfer
    I mostly surf in bali (live in uluwatu) and sometimes on the surrounding islands. Last year I had a sci fi 5,11, I think it’s a pretty good board but maybe bali Isn’t the best place for the sci fi. I basically only surfed it on reefbreaks. I had a hard time finding the right spot for my back feet, felt like I really had to put it at the back of the pad. Liked it most as a quad, didn’t work good for me as a truster(but I’m a truster guy). Lft construction sucked for me, it dinged super easy and always sucked heaps of water, that took days to dry out. After a couple of months it started delaminating so I sold it.
    This year in bali I been surfing a 6,0 groveler helium gamma and a 6,1 pu js monstabox. These 2 boards have been so good and I love both of them.
    The gamma didn’t at all have the problem of the lft. Had it for 4 months and not a pressure ding. Only ding I had was on the tail from the leg rope on big wipe outs. Didn’t suck any water but I think it was cuz of the balsa rails, if I made cracks on the deck I recon it would have sucked heaps of water to!
    Anyway the gamma was a solid board that really helped me surf more radical in the pocket! So easy to turn! Paddles good.
    Good with the steeper rocker on better days in indo. Always surfed it as a truster, fcs ka large.
    Well I snapped the gamma 3 days ago, so that’s the end of that story! But boy did it suck up water when it snapped!
    Also the board got super yellow with brown veins after 3 months, the only white spot on the board was were I was sitting.
    The Monsta box was abit to much volume for me lately, bought it when I was 90kg and pretty fat. But what a great board! I would recommend it the most! Such a versatile surfboard. Grovels good and I used it as a daily driver even on pumping waves. Had the board for 2 years and snapped it 2 days ago. 2 boards snapped in 2 sessions.
    Got one month left in indo before I go home.
    What do you recon I should pick up now?
    Hope someone might have use of my input!
    Thank you again for all the great work you do for the surfing community!
    Hat off.
    Regards

    One of the rare surfers who style I can watch all day. Up there with Curren and Slater.
    In contrast I can barely endure watching 95% of the surfers on the WCT... Irrespective of how many crazy air rodeo flip reverse inverse tricks they launch... Which anyway are mostly a cover up for their lack of ability and understanding to connect artistically, cohesively and athletically with a wave. As you do.

    Great stuff as always, i do see where the 5'7" seems to bogg in the small stuff. I ride a 5'9 im 150#s 5'8" tall and feel the same about mine in small surf. Good waves with some power to them is where this board works best for me intermediate.

  • @mauricegourmet

    Great Review! I love the SciPhi. I actually got mine about an inch longer which helped it to be more versatile for me. I’ve surfed in everything from clean El Salvador waves to onshore Huntington pier bowl waves and it feels great in both. The Cymatic is also a super fun board to me it perfect for Huntington’s waves. I’ve not been able to get the Omni to work for me though. It’s the only Tomo board I had to sell after two months because I could not find my flow on it. Maybe it was the fins. It was my first FCS fin set up and I used the Stretch’s. It never felt special.

      Have a 5'5, great board, traded my 6'0 for it. Quick background, I've been surfing for over 10 years but still suck. I weight 160lb. Nowadays I've been surfing only on weekends, when possible, so it's a great board for me because of the paddling power. Gets a bit getting used to padding more ahead in the board but it's great to have all that foam under your chest. The board is very responsive, almost too much on larger waves, but after you get used to it, it's lots of fun. Also for me, who takes good care of my boards and am not surfing as much anymore it's great going with helium for the durability. Plus you can late drop those bombs with more peace of mind. I've dropped on one where I came up worried with my board since it was pretty shallow but not a dent. Board was recommended to me by the knowledgeable and friendly Bird of Bird's surf shed, SD.

      I had a 5'5" EVO, had mixed surfs with it. one wave brilliant, next wave terrible. not forgiving at all, feet on deck had to be perfect otherwise squirmy. waves needed to be 3+ foot, couldn't get used to paddling a small board in larger waves - paddled like a brick for me. swapped it for a Al Merrick Sampler, way better all round board.

    Right away, I felt that straight rail line, I'm sketchy when it comes to designs that tend to contradict themselves in terms of design, this board has a 5" nose rocker and a low entry tail rocker which according to Tomo is suppose to plain better. I surfed this board in crappy conditions in PB in overhead waves and it went ok. Tomorrow I'm taking it to Blacks as a quad, I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers!!!!

    • @jimzzful
      @jimzzful 5 лет назад +1

      Ive owned 4 tomos and the sci fi definitely has the best balance between speed and control, carve /snap, steep vs flat faced waves. My surfing went to another level.
      The design features all work well together.
      Wide tail and concaves and lower tail rocker for drive and down the line speed. The bat tail and flyer for quick snaps off the back foot and the moderate nose rocker for more front footed open face carves. Can't go wrong with this board at the right size and volume

    How do you compare this board with the fever?
    I am making the midas from machado in PU because the price and I would want to see a review.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  5 лет назад

      Xabier xabi I’ve heard of surfers having similar problems with their LFT boards. I have not had any problems at all with any of the Firewire boards. The LFT is a little heavier but for good reason.., that weight helps keep the Chatter or Vibration down and the rails engaged on the water surface.
      I personally like the HE Tech better but I guess it really matters on the board type. The Gamma in HE felt great... no complaint on the board either.

      And sci-fi vs fever?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  5 лет назад

      Xabier xabi Fever is a HPSB with Continuous rocker and decent tail rocker for performance in the pocket. The SciFi will be faster down the line and the Fever will be better in the pocket. The Fever will also handle 8’ surf no problem

    Just subscribed and appreciate all the detail and info you give on your boards.
    It really helps us as the consumer make a more sound decision with our purchases. Quick question. Would you recommend this or the the gamma as a daily? Currently riding the Seaside as my daily, just cause of all the fun I'm having on it (5'4" at 29.5 L), and surf the South Shore of Hawaii regularly (Ala Moana).
    Thanks for any advice you can provide.

      Dane Quitevis The Gamma needs a wave with some push and it’s very responsive so it can challenge your abilities. The SciFi is a bit more user friendly and it’s faster in smaller surf. I would go SciFi as a Daily Driver for SS PF HI

    Hey Noel, great review and very informative as always, I've had two Sci-Fi's now but I noticed they felt different even though they were the same size, one had lower rails and slightly different rocker than the other. Just wondering if you noticed anything like that at all?

    Hey Noel, thanks for the great reviews, your break downs are very informative! Question, aside from aesthetics, if you already owned a Cymatic, would you see any reason to purchase a Sci-fi? Does one board outshine the other in certain aspects?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  5 лет назад +3

      Jamby James The Sci-Fi will go a little better in 2’ surf but I like the way the Cymatic fits better in transition on a 2’ pocket. If your looking to compliment your Cymatic for smaller surf then I recommend the Machado Seaside. Such a sick little board... excellent paddler and insane down the line speed. That’s a sick two board quiver. Cheers

    Noel! Great style and reviewing jobs!
    I have the 5,10 sci fi and I have problems in going straight to the lip with that board. I use to surf fcs medium performer fins and I feel the board wants to do only carving and not reentrys. I feel it better with MR 2+1 fins. I also feel it too much fast with bigger waves and then is even much more difficult to attack the lip. Which fins and size of fin would you recomend me to be able to control the board and attack the lip instead of do carving.
    I want to ride it as a truster and I don’t want to feel the board so hard when turning (I feel like I’m going on train rails). I want a loose feeling and control that speed in turns.
    Thanks in advance.
    Keep it going!

      POV Raw Surf I prefer Futures... they flex test their fins. Their Ride Number in flex on their different constructions is next level. FCS needs to raise their game in this area. I like the FCSII fin box and their products but I really think they need to flex test their fins.... especially the Neo Carbon, NEO Glass, Air Core etc...

      Nathan Beane What liters are you riding on your Daily Driver? If your intermediate surfer take your weight in pounds and divide it by 6. Example... 155 divided by 6 is 25.83 liters. So I would say 26-27 liters is good so maybe the 5’7” or 5’8” SciFi.
