I accidentally become my church's official photographer. Love being able to serve in this way. It's so good to find another Christian photographer on RUclips.
I shoot with a Nikon 750. This was extremely helpful. I have become the unofficial church photographer, mostly taking photos of our events. Thank you for the tips! I mainly shoot with a 50mm and 85mm.
Dude. You are a gift! Thanks for everything you share! I use a 5D Mark IV. Would you be willing to do a series on filming worship on Sundays? That’s the biggest obstacle for us right now. Thanks again man!
There are some great tips here, but the one thing I really missed was some input on the intention of photographing on a Sunday. I’m a photographer on the side and I shoot both personal stuff for fun as well as couples and weddings. So when I take photos on a Sunday I can get good images. But what are they supposed to achieve, really? It could be anything from creating memories for congregation members (much like wedding photography) to promotional work or photos for specific areas of our website (e.g. pastor portraits, wide shot of our sanctuary, small group photos, ...). At my church I don’t think anyone has clear idea of what purpose photography is even supposed to serve for us, so I’m shying away from even spending the time on doing that, being involved in other ministries as well. So what are your goals behind photographing at church?
Just started serving on the church's creative tech team this year. I'm shooting with Olympus E-M1 MkII with f2.8 wide (24-80) and telephoto (80-300) zooms. Also use a Canon Powershot G7X MkII because it has f1.8-f2.8 zoom (24-100 equivalent) and results from the RAW files have been pretty good. Saves changing lens on the Olympus and fits in a pocket. Great content and will be back for more.
i shoot with my olympus e-m1 mkIII! I love this body and tend to shoot with my 40-150 2.8 pro. we have a large church and it gives me the flexibility to capture moment across the room if needed.
I see several posts here stating that they became the accidental photographer at the church. That is because you take good pictures, not because your camera does. Every burgeoning artist has to realize, it's not the brush or the canvas, it's you. I've seen marvelous photos taken with a smartphone. I've also seen poor photos taken with a multi-thousand-dollar camera. If you are already good, Omar's tips will help, but if you aren't, they will be less help.

I had never thought about those tips. Very interesting.
This is excellent! I use a Sony A6400 with a Sigma lens, purchasing this camera has made such a huge difference in the content we’re able to produce. Love the video, look forward to seeing more!
This was so helpful!! As someone who has always loved photography and just barely has a camera set it can be a little overwhelming, I can’t wait to use these tips to start taking pictures at my church!!
Fantastic tips you give. I have taken photos for 2 years now. Last year I change camera from EOS 80D to EOS R, because I want to be silent in the church. Objective is Tamron 24-70 2.8 and a old canon 55-250. My thoughts is to be invisible under the service. We use Flickr for the pictures.
This video is super helpful! Thank you! We are currently working on building a photography team for our church because it's something that's really lacking... Working on finding which cameras and lenses are best for us. We currently just have a Canon Rebel T5 and 17-55mm lens.
I just started doing photos at my church. I use a Canon T5. What additional tips do you have for capturing the best photos? Like, what iso, f-stop, and shutter speed work best?
Wanting to make a “trailer” for our student ministry. Would love to see a video on how to create a 2-5 minute video that gives church “online shoppers” a realistic and appealing feel for what our ministry offers. Do you have examples of this? How would you go about this?
Thanks! I’ve shot a lot and am new at shooting for my church. I’m using Canon 6D and alternating between my 85mm and 70-200mm. That thing is so heavy that I can’t use it for too long. Ha. Thanks for the tips! My goal is to capture the spirit and the “vibe” of my church.
Sony a6000 w/ kit lens, im looking to upgrade, would I be better off buying the Rebel T7 bundle from walmart, or just upgrading my lens collection for my Sony a6000?
Hey bro appreciate the video. I am my church’s photographer and I shoot with Canon 6D mark II and mostly use my beast Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 Sport Addition lens.
Lol just found this video and was surprised when I heard the name of your church! Ours is also called Citylight Church here in Amarillo. I don't think we're part of the same group of church though. Most the other ones are in the northeast. Awesome video bro
so awesome. I love this training. What is the best lens to shoot from far back and focus on the one or two person on the platform. I am using D7100 with Nikon 18-140mm
Hey, so I am one of the main photographers at my church and I LOVE the idea of setting up a smugmug account for folks to be able to DL extra content. My biggest question right now is, "How do you deal with folks who DON'T want their photos taken /shared" That's the biggest hurdle I feel we have right now before implementing something like this.
I work at Metro Community Church as the photographer/videographer. No one ever has complained about the photo team because we are very cautious of being distracting, we never want to take people out of the moment. IF someone ever were to complain, during our "pre-service" countdown/slide show, we put up a disclaimer that says by entering this building you are complying to a media release.
Great video man! Hey do you happen to have that shot-list PDF somewhere? I didn’t see it on the link in the description but I am shooting for a couple churches in the coming weeks. Fuji X-Pro3!
I use an a7iii with a 25-70 2.8 sigma art. Do you have a video for settings on your camera for low light church photography? Or any tips while using a 2.8?
im getting my first lens and camera (i did photography on my phone so ik already) just dont know if i should get a 35mm,56mm,or 85mm, lens? that would also be good for portraits
Is there a less expensive camera you would suggest for a smaller church to start out with. Not a lot of funds right now to put that much into it but would love to be able to start somewhere.
Hey brother, thanks for this video, great job! Subbed from this video alone. Can I ask if your presets will work in a very bright worship center that is DROWNING in outside light through the windows?
Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing. Will share this with my Son who's a talented and passionate photographer and video filmaker and I am looking forward to him serving the Lord with his gifting. Thanks again for sharing this and if any of you have any tips and support for a young talented video film maker, please do let me know. Blessings to all the gifted and talented folk reading this message.
I also accidentally became the churches photographer. And I think I’m struggling pleasing the pastor. I have a canon 90d with kit lenses. I do have the canon 50 but it’s to close up for our church. And I’m shooting on auto because I just can’t get the lighting in manual mode. 😔 I feel like a failure. I’ve been doing this for over a year now and I love most of my photos but I do have to edit almost everyone of them because it’s so dark in our church and I’m not allowed to use my godox flash during worship. I’m definitely displeased with myself at the moment…! Why can’t I figure it out?
